Apple is ending support for progressive web apps (PWAs) for iPhone users within the EU, stirring concern among developers and users alike. This decision comes as a definitive blow to the accessibility and functionality of web-based applications on Apple devices. The move to discontinue web app support has been apparent in each iteration of the iOS 17.4 beta, with users experiencing persistent issues. However, Apple has now clarified that this is deliberate. In an update posted on its developer website, Apple disclosed its decision, citing the complexities of aligning web apps with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) as the primary reason. The company asserted that complying with the DMA would necessitate the creation of an entirely new integration architecture, a task deemed impractical alongside other mandated changes. Google has released the developer preview of Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2, which includes a new ‘Desktop Windowing’ feature for Android tablets. It allows users to resize and arrange apps freely on their tablets, similar to what happens on a desktop. Currently, apps open in full-screen by default. With the new feature enabled, the apps open in a window, which can be resized, moved, or maximized. Additionally, a task bar appears at the bottom showing all of the running apps of the user. Nice trick for exploring apps: Often, when we want to research a specific app, we face the issue that it's only available on the App Store, limited to iOS devices. Normally, accessing the App Store/iTunes requires an Apple device and an account. 🎯 This free tool resolves the problem for those without an Apple device, allowing us to search for any app and get comprehensive information just as it appears on the App Store. Additionally, the tool lets you filter apps based on compatibility with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more. When we started building BetterYou, we weren't sure if what we wanted to do was even possible. Screentime for iPhone had just come out a month before and the landscape for measuring how we spend time on devices was new and largely undocumented. We built on Android first since it was more open source, and less of a black box. When you are experimenting you don't want to just see that there's smoke coming from your car, you want to be able to pop the hood and see what's going on. Google has kept the OS open-source and very transparent since day one, which is important for any of us trying to build a better mobile future. That's why I’m saddened to hear that the U.S. Department of Justice wants to break apart Google and Android. With the release of iOS18, Apple is rolling out significant updates to its Mail app, set to change how users interact with their inboxes. "This is going to be one of the most significant updates to the inbox experience that we’ve seen in years," said Tinuiti's Kellie Collins. "With Apple’s 48% email market share, we anticipate an impact to KPIs, but given some of the updates are limited to newer devices, we’ll have the benefit of seeing this impact gradually. This gives us time to get ahead and optimize before the majority of subscribers experience the new inbox.
