What are the best methods for inclusive teaching in higher education?
Build accessibility into your course from the beginning. You never know when a student with a disability is going to enroll in your course. Being proactive with accessibility will definitely save you time in the long term and your students will appreciate your inclusive and accessible approach to teaching. All students benefit from accessibility so your efforts are valuable to everyone in your class.

Online Accessibility Learning Track
-
I created a multi-faceted learning track for internal employees with the goal of increasing knowledge and skills for digital accessibility. This learning track included a self-paced Storyline course as well as a series of live, skill-based workshops. The workshops were highly interactive and engaging to allow learners an opportunity to practice the skills and ask questions. Tools and resources were also provided to participants to apply the skills in their roles at the college.

Professional Staff Day of Learning

As the chair of Professional Staff Welfare Committee, I served in the role of lead event planner for the inagural, college-wide, all-day event that provided learning opportunities for employees who are classified as Professional Staff at CPCC. 160 employees attended the event, which held on Central Campus. It was hosted by Professional Staff Welfare Committee, College Senate, and Human Resources.

It was hosted by Professional Staff Welfare Committee, College Senate, and Human Resources.
The agenda included morning refreshments and networking, 2 rounds of concurrent sessions (attendees choose to attend 1 of 3 sessions each round), lunch with a keynote speaker, an afternoon session focused on Talent Development at the College, and a Learning Expo. The President of CPCC, Dr. Deitemeyer, also participated in the afternoon session by sharing her vision of Talent Development at the College and participated in Q & A with the audience. Attendees also received a survey to provide feedback on the event, which will be evaluated in preparation for future events. -
ADA Bootcamp: Making Accessible PowerPoints
-
I created and facilitated an engaging and interactive in-person training session that was delivered 60 times across multiple campuses at the College. The training provided participants opportunities to learn as well as practice new skills in session. I provided helpful accessibility resources to participants as well as valuable feedback on making accessible online content in session.

The Panoptes
-
Collaborated with and lead the eLearning team to organize and execute the first-ever Panoptes. The event recognized faculty who created accessible and engaging videos for online courses at CPCC. The URL provided highlights the award winners and some of the best moments from the event. Using event planning and project management skills, I successfully executed this interactive event.

Professional Staff Welfare Committee Spring Forum
-
As committee chair, I lead the committee in organizing and planning a forum for Professional Staff at CPCC to provide information and updates from College Senate and Professional Staff Welfare Committee. I also created an interactive and accessible presentation, using Storyline 360, that was presented during the forum and shared with Professional Staff across the college post-forum.

The Health Promotion Model learning module

I served as Instructional Designer and Developer for this project and collaborated with a SME to create this self-paced, online learning module for a Nursing program hybrid course at CPCC. This high quality and interactive course is accessible following WCAG 2.0.

Animals on Campus: Understanding Policy 6.26
-
As an Instructional Design Consultant, I collaborated with Professional Development and Disability Services to design and develop an online, self-paced course for the College. This engaging and interactive course provided education on the College's policy for service animals on campus. Utilizing the ADDIE model of design, I delivered a high quality course to the College that is currently offered to employees for online training purposes.

“Laurie has been of great assistance to the Professional Staff Welfare Committee and always handles herself with grace and patience within the committee as well as in the Senate body. Further, she took it upon herself to give a presentation to Senate on behalf of her department in order to ensure that Disability Services is serving its students to the best of its ability, to open communication lines, and to clarify discrepancies between departments. She has continued to amaze the committee with the perseverance and dedication she illustrates toward College Senate and to the students of CPCC. Because she continuously goes above and beyond what is asked of her, she endlessly seeks out opportunities for betterment within CPCC. She is an invaluable asset to the Senate body.”
“As a Senator, Laurie has presented to College Senate about Disability Services to ensure that faculty and staff understand the services and resources available for students with disabilities. Her work in Disability Services ensures all CPCC students have the resources they need to be successful. She is a vital and contributing member of the Professional Staff Welfare Committee (PSWC) and is always prepared and professional when bringing forth issues and responses. Since being on the PSWC, she consistently volunteers to help with whatever is needed from taking minutes to accepting a leadership role as Co-Chair. Laurie is also a positive voice for College Senate by providing Senate updates to her unit departments and encouraging faculty and professional staff to become Senators.” -
