I've been having some powerful conversations lately with phenomenal women who are hesitating to step into the spotlight. These are doctors, executives, entrepreneurs – absolute powerhouses in their fields. Achievers. But when it comes to building their personal brand? They pump the brakes (which is very unlike them when it comes to other aspects like their family, academic accolades, and career). "It feels selfish," they tell me. "Like I'm being arrogant or self-serving." I get it. As women, we're often taught to be humble, to not "show off." But here's the truth I want all of you queens to know: Building your personal brand isn't selfish – it's necessary. Here's why — 💎 Amplifying your voice matters. You are one of ONE. What a bunch of women... In 2023 I made it one of my big goals to connect with more people. Full stop. Whether that was people to collaborate with, work with, have coffee with, have gin with, have a rant about self employed life with and ultimately, people who get it. When I started my business I ended up naturally working exclusively with women. Over the three years I have been running Studio Lago Design, I've continued to only work with women, though now this is a much more conscious decision that marries together perfectly with my brand vision. That vision is to take female business owners on a journey to get more clarity around their business identity, grow their confidence to get online and shout from the rooftops about what they're doing, so they can run a business they really love. Shouldn't every woman have the power to do that? Tomorrow, I’m being honored as one of 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲’𝘀 𝟱𝟬 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻, after only 3 years in this city and just 10 months into bootstrapping my own business. We’re conditioned to downplay women’s accomplishments in the workplace, celebrating personal milestones far louder. But here’s the problem: 👀 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟯𝟯% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗻. 👀 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱. 👀 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟴% 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗖𝗘𝗢'𝘀 are made up of women despite performance and potential being equal, simply because we don't share our stories loud enough. Why? Because we’ve been told not to "show off."..... 💣 𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀. If more of us openly celebrated women’s achievements—𝗼𝘂𝗿 achievements—the opportunities and the visibility would follow. In fact, I believe that if promotions were solely based on performance, we’d see 𝟱𝟴%+ 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗘𝗢 roles filled with women!! But it’s not just about what you do; it’s about how your story is told. Tomorrow, as I step into this room, I’m carrying with me the recognition that we, as women, need to be louder about our professional success. It’s time we celebrate women’s accomplishments as much as we celebrate everything else. Because every time we share our wins, we open doors for more. 🚪✨️ This isn’t just about my moment. It’s about 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 out there fighting to build something meaningful—let’s normalize sharing it, loud and proud, so we’re not just a fraction of the conversation, but 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁! For Women in Business: Let me tell you a little secret when it comes to impacting your people... Every good brand has a compelling "brand story." Think about it... why do you follow the people on social media that you do? It's most likely because something about them (and their story) resonates with you and they've built an emotional connection. Solidifying your brand's story will help you share about your business from a place of confidence. You'll be able to clearly communicate your core values. And, you'll be able to effortlessly highlight experiences. If you haven't developed your brand's story, start here: Grab a journal and write down why and how your business started. Reflect on what sparked your journey. Take note of any events, persons, or passions that had an impact on you starting your business. This will be the foundation of crafting your brand story. "When a woman truly believes in herself and walks with ease in her power, it makes weak people nervous"- Christy Rutherford. Late last night, I came across this quote by a woman I deeply respect. And given what happened to me recently, I need to share this with my community. You may have already heard about the "attempted appropriation" of my brand assets-but here’s what happened next. Yesterday, after posting on Facebook, another female founder took my exact caption, switched out my image for hers, and posted it as her own. I sh.. you not. When FB notified me - I thought it was a share. It wasn't. It was another creator’s pic with my caption, getting likes and praise for an "insightful" post that wasn’t even hers. I was like: "Are we doing that"? I had to go on her page and call her out for plagiarism. Her response? She didn’t even apologize-just a weak "no hard feelings" like it was nothing. But let me tell you something: It’s everything. We're not here to steal from each other. We are here to uplift, support, and build. If you need to copy someone else’s work to get ahead, then you’ve already lost. In the age of digital tools and endless resources, there's no excuse for jacking someone’s content. And no-I’m not going to tolerate it. I’ve worked too hard for this. Everyday I’m out here serving my female founders-helping them build, grow, and thrive. But we’re not going to win by tearing each other down or stealing from one another. At least not from me.
