In this week's Near Media podcast we talk about how Google is really pushing local data in Europe (Mike Blumenthal's "infinity pack"), how the Google SERP has become like -- choose your metaphor here -- the Las Vegas strip (and I don't mean that in a good way) and how AI Overviews represent a fundamental challenge for the company (per Jess Peck). As a bonus, at the end, we work out how Google should handle AIOs going forward (no, not eliminate them completely, although David Mihm wouldn't mind that). Hint: like healthcare info.

Did you know Shopify’s checkout extensibility works on the Shop app via Shop pay? Here’s an example of Checkout Blocks running on Ippodo Tea surfacing several blocks seamlessly into checkout: - required phone field specifically for international orders. Not possible natively. - a checkbox for preorder acknowledgment - preorder ship date using our Liquid powered line item content block. - upsells using Shopify recommendations All without any custom code. 🤌

So much of theme management with concepts like variables and modes is about determining an end value for a token. If you have a modes like "brand", "density", and "color scheme" and you want "Brand A, Cozy, Dark" you have a lot of values for the tokens that are ultimately generated from a lot of different variable & mode combinations. In this example, we'd probably preserve a bunch of brand treatments like typography, borders, etc. but a lot would change about the use of spacing and color. Those spacing and color changes might ultimately require us to change our font weight, or a border radius. And so on. You end up in these self referential loops of changes where you're modifying and storing large sets of variables and modes as themes that proliferate really quickly. Instead we should be using a new object we call a collection. Collections allow you to group variables and reference any variable / mode combo. Ultimately, this is what a theme should be: a set of tokens that are mostly references to collections of modes and variables. Knapsack is going to be doing some really cool stuff with this soon, and we feel pretty confident that we've figured out how to take the modes and variables work in Figma and turn it into something that is compliant with the W3C working group tokens spec. Most self hosted CMS’s are installed on a VPS or Virtual Private Server. Simple and reliable. Think open source software like Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla. At SetSeed we use them too. Curation good! Curation bad! While most targeting offered by curation can be done through a DSP today, curation is a perfect trend for the privacy safe world of tomorrow. It will have a tremendous impact as a core product and differentiator for the SSPs and exchanges. And, of course, like any product in advertising, some will use it to justify unreasonably high margins.
