Sharing some insights/trends we are seeing in the first half of 2024: - The majority of startups HQ’d in NYC & SF founded in the last two years are hiring most if not all of their employees in the office (at least 3 days a week) - Less than 5% of those are mandating 5 days a week in office. - Most top candidates are optimizing for hybrid with remote up to 3 days a week - Compensation across the board for early-stage startups has remained relatively flat since 2023 - For startups located outside of core major tech hubs, there is more openness and even preference for remote to tap into broader markets and compete for top talent The overview is that local talent and teams are making a comeback and salaries are not rising as drastically as they have in the past 5 years. I'm excited to be leading my third YC demo day fund for the S24 batch! I've been involved with YC since 2015, first going through YC myself, staying closely involved with the community for 7+ years, and culminating in working there as a Visiting Partner, where I invested in over 120 companies and helped them raise over $200M in capital. Over all this time, one thing is clear to me: YC founders are only getting better and better, and YC companies remain the cream of the crop for early stage founders. And it's not because companies come out of YC "fully baked" -- many of the best companies went through Demo Day with no revenue, or even pivoting just a few months afterwards. Yet, over 5% of this batch will likely become unicorns. This batch is appears to be the biggest one since 2021, which will make for the most interesting (and more competitive) cycle in a long time. Raising venture capital (VC) has traditionally been the primary pathway to launching and scaling a successful startup. However, the landscape is shifting, and today, there are compelling reasons to consider alternative funding methods. From my own experience as the CEO and co-founder of an insurtech company, Yasmina, I've witnessed firsthand the evolution of the startup ecosystem. When we started, the prevalent belief was that hefty VC investments were essential for early-stage companies. Yet, as technology advanced, becoming more accessible and cost-effective, we realized that our reliance on large sums of external funding could be minimized. This shift allowed us to focus on lean, strategic growth rather than pursuing aggressive expansion at any cost. Today, VCs recognize that the old playbook may no longer be the best fit. The rise of more innovative technologies means startups can achieve much more with significantly less capital. This requires VCs to rethink their investment strategies, focusing on adding value beyond just capital—through mentorship, industry connections, and operational support. Moreover, the exit landscape for startups is also transforming. While IPOs and traditional acquisitions are still viable, new exit strategies like SPACs are potentially more aligned avenues for liquidity. These changes necessitate shifting from the conventional "grow fast or die" mentality to a more sustainable approach to business growth. For VCs to remain relevant, they must adapt by offering "smart capital" beyond mere financial investment. They must become true partners to founders, providing the tools and guidance needed to navigate this new, dynamic environment. As a founder, the value of such a partnership cannot be overstated—it's not just about funding but about building a lasting legacy on a strategic and sustainable growth foundation.

We gathered dozens of operators from the MGMT Boston Operators Club and local founders alongside the 186 Ventures team this October to discuss the evolution of our dear software markets, the status of some predictions for 2024 (all looking good!), and what’s on deck for next year. General Partner Giuseppe Stuto led us through the following predictions for 2025 to share with you all.. ↕ We will see more vertical AI applications manifest themselves within the Enterprise in a similar ways that SaaS moved from horizontal to vertical use cases 🔔 We will see services business models more common and software budget purchasing models less common - SaaS may even be given away for cheap/free as a “way in” ⚖ Capital efficiency, on a relative basis, will almost be required to create enduring & compounding defensible enterprise value. Details like procurement cycle lengths and creativity with non-dilutive financing, like leveraging revenue based financing tools for example, will all matter 💡 Specific to AI, premiums will be placed on applications that can actually get “reasoning” right. All purpose LLMs still have a ways to go and there are multiple approaches with the “jury still out” on how to get context and reasoning right. Infrastructure solutions that use general purpose or customizable knowledge graphs to help application developers get to 100% (enterprise acceptable accuracy) will emerge OR savvy application developers will fill the gaps themselves. I 💯agree with Oz Merchant on this topic. Some folks advise founders to pitch very selectively and 'pick your pitch' - you get one shot, choose it wisely? I'm 180 degrees opposite of that - be a promiscuous pitcher! - ABP - ALWAYS BE PITCHING. Because your pitch gets better with every no, take that feedback, learn, iterate. Right now it's taking 50-100 no's for Triangle co's to get funding, it's still tough out there, so get through the no's fast to get to a yes. Check out the event - also go see others pitch, it all helps you get better - pitching is like PMF - lots of iteration, tons of grinding to get through to the other side.

I recently explored Peter Walker's insightful piece from Carta and SaaSOpen 2024, which sheds light on the equity landscape from pre-seed rounds to the public offering. 🔑 Key Takeaways: 1) Founder Equity Dynamics: Initially, if you're in a two-cofounder setup, expect a median split of 55% to 45%.
