Activate is thrilled to announce our investment in Muon Space and join their mission to build the space infrastructure of the future for Earth observation. This investment represents a continuation of multiple theses for Activate, including the transformation of existing space infrastructure and the proliferation of new satellites; the growing role space systems will play in providing critical data for infrastructure and security applications here on earth; and the need to drive systems Adaption in the face of accelerating impacts of climate and extreme weather (over 50% of all climate variables are only measurable from space). We are particularly excited about the groundbreaking work Muon is doing with the Earth Fire Alliance (in partnership with Google Research) to build the world’s first real-time wildfire monitoring system which will transform how we detect and address wildfires globally. Muon’s integrated platform to design, build and operate satellite constellations – and ultimately manage and deliver data to its customers – is highly differentiated due to the level of verticalization they’ve taken on. Combined with a physics-based mission simulation environment and digital payload interface, Muon is bringing “software-defined” to the satellite hardware category in a way never done before, which ultimately means faster/better/cheaper missions to space and more valuable data at the end of these missions. The industry is taking note, as Muon has signed over $100 million in contracts already in 2024. Today, we announced a $200 million Series C investment led by Thomas Tull’s US Innovative Technology Fund (USIT). The funding round included participation from March Capital, Generation Investment Management, Salesforce Ventures, Friends & Family Capital, and each of Altana’s key existing investors, including GV (Google Ventures), Activate Capital, Floating Point, and OMERS Ventures. Businesses today must know and manage their global value chains, from the sourcing and processing of raw materials, through intermediate production and final assembly, to sale and end use. This funding will expand Altana's efforts to tackle some of the world’s thorniest problems – from building economic security, to mitigating carbon emissions, to protecting critical industries and infrastructure.
