What do Bill Gates and CTO at Infinigrid AS - Arne Brufladt Svendsen have in common?   Bill Gates once reflected on his early career, where, as a high school student, he wrote software for the power grid in the Pacific Northwest. “It was an amazing learning experience,” he said, recalling how they were computerizing the grid long before most people even thought about its importance. Today, the critical role of that infrastructure is undeniable, as energy systems face growing complexities and challenges.   Similarly, Arne Brufladt Svendsen’s journey into the power grid world began with his thesis, which eventually evolved into Promaps Realtime ( Infinigrid AS), a revolutionary software now used by grid operators to predict real-time risks. What started as an academic project has become a powerful tool that employs deep learning algorithms to solve some of the most complex mathematical challenges in grid management.   Both Gates and Svendsen share a forward-looking vision: the belief in software as a catalyst for change. Gates, through his climate initiative, Breakthrough Energy , emphasizes the role of innovation in modernizing energy systems, highlighting how technological advancements are essential to building a cleaner, more resilient energy future. He recognizes that although policy is a significant challenge, technology will play a pivotal role in creating efficient, sustainable energy grids.   Svendsen’s Promaps Realtime takes that vision further, offering a practical solution that empowers grid operators to assess risks in real-time, improve operational management, and make data-driven decisions. By analyzing complex data structures, #PromapsRealtime helps operators optimize everything from maintenance schedules to cost-benefit evaluations, reducing the likelihood of costly interruptions and enhancing the grid’s overall performance.   Both Gates and Svendsen have demonstrated that human ingenuity can solve even the hardest problems, like climate change and energy transmission. Their work shows that by harnessing the power of software, we can build more resilient and efficient energy systems, laying the foundation for a future with cleaner air, fewer blackouts, more jobs, and healthier communities. With innovators like them, the path to a sustainable energy future is already taking shape.

Let me introduce our second baby Scandinavian Energy Centers, a sister company to Scandinavian Data Centers by thanking Regeringskansliet, Klimat- och näringslivsdepartementet for our first government sponsored seminar with the leading actors in the Swedish energy landscape. We will officially launch both companies in the near term. While the core take away was that new renewable energy production is being hampered by long permitting processes and grid constraints there is a growing uneasiness about the reliability of the speed of electrifying our economies not least because the surreal amount of capital and resources expanding the grid would necessitate. Just expanding the grid would make Europe run out of cooper in 15 years according to the panel. However, an even bigger question remains the size of increased demand if the current green projects do not materialize as previously forcasted. Whilst policy makers should not try to guess what technologies will be the best solutions in the future, they should do everything in their power to promote as much flexibility as possible. What I missed in these debates was the surreal amount of energy demand the AI mega trend will engender around the globe and especially in the Nordics. What an opportunity if we get it right and huge risk if we do not. Current trend is that they will be placed in areas with power, but by extension increasing the power demands on the grid and by extension the price of electricity. This outcome will hamper the already poor European productivity and be a death knell for new green industries that need highly affordable electricity prices.  What if we create smart incentives to place PPA buying data centers and grid batteries in urban areas who work to stabilize and strengthen the grid allowing them through private line connections to new wind and solar parks. In one fell swoop we help ensure the continued roll out of renewable production infrastructure, limit the needed grid roll-out, support the twin transition of digitization and circularity and as a nice cherry on top, heat our cities with electricity mostly paid by someone else.  If only someone was thinking of doing this?

My take on the Analytic Pioneer Summit is coming in a bit later than I would have liked, but as some of you might know, we had some big news to share yesterday: https://lnkd.in/dD3hDjkU That said, I still wanted to share my thoughts on what was a fantastic day. First and foremost, as we've come to expect from them, Patrick Oliver Mohr and Marcus Stade put together an incredible event at the BMW Park Basketball Stadium, pulling out all the stops. The venue looked amazing and radiated energy—I almost forgot I had to wake up at 4 AM to catch my flight. The only small downside was that the stage setup encouraged more formal presentations and less discussion. Nevertheless, I think everyone left with a real 'wow' feeling (though I’m afraid my pictures don’t do it justice). I had the chance to join the (multiple award-winning???) Gunnar Griese for his deep dive on Server-Side Google Tag Manager. Rather than summarising it here, I recommend you check out his blog! It did remind me, though, that while these topics are becoming more approachable, they’re still very much at a “programmer level” of complexity. We’re still a few AI breakthroughs away from a marketing tech stack that doesn’t require programming or technical assistance. One of my favourite subjects—how to activate and actually use data—was brilliantly covered by Susanne Dreier-Phan Quoc. She offered a fun, comedic take on how her organisation chose (and rejected) use cases. Her approach to highlighting what you *could* do, but really *shouldn’t* (ethically, legally), was a strong and important move. It not only showcased the potential of technology but also emphasised the responsibility we carry in its activation. Really nice! I also gave a talk of my own, focusing on key considerations when working with website interactions and website real estate. I covered a few common pitfalls and how to approach them differently—(queue pictures). Steen Rasmussens talk on campaign tracking hygiene was highly rated, and deservedly so. While it might seem like an outdated topic, it’s still incredibly relevant. If your basics aren’t solid, every decision that follows will fail. His slide on the bias between channels and how easily tracking data can be misinterpreted really stuck with me. It’s a reminder of the classic adage: 'You get what you measure,' but it’s equally important to act with an understanding of what you *don’t* measure, and the bias that might introduce. **P.S.** Tomorrow, I’m attending the 'Future of Marketing' panel at the breakfast meetup hosted by the Brand Leadership Community. I love Backstage from Spotify But I feel that people are given a fantastic tool, but not guidance on how to use it. We’ve had platform engineering for a couple of years now, and now the new hype is Developer Experience. This is where Backstage is the go-to platform. But, we keep on making the same mistakes again and again in our industry. Do you have a strategy for your backstage offering ? Who is your target audience? What do they NEED ? Do they need a Flux plugin ? Do they need a Kubernetes plugin ? NO. They need to create products, ensure they are ok and release new features. It needs to be developer centric. You need to understand their domain, needs, problems and concerns and then think about how you can ease or provide help with Backstage. Make the responsibility clear on both the developer and platform side. Who is responsible for what ? What signals do they need to react to the things they are responsible for ? Anything more then that is noise. Confusion. Build a Backstage platform your developers need, not the one you need.

At Elby.co we've been working closely with regulators since day 1 and the progress has always been steady and very positive. Wherever we went from the people on the ground at the municipality to top politicians all has been positive and applauding our solution. But it's a fact that we've now been talking to regulators for a long time and although getting closer, we're still not there. The scary thing is that we're the lucky ones. We have my co-founder Lars Køhler with a background from Rådet for Grøn Omstilling who has the network and knows who to talk to at the relevant places and how to talk with them. It's safe to say that the process we've been through have been FAST compared to any other startup who just came in from the street. But it's not fast enough. Nowhere near. Imagine being a startup in our space WITHOUT the experience and the network like my co-founder Lars. Without the ability to fund themselves for multiple years. It would simply not be possible. The system (both national and EU) seem to have itself backed up into a corner with rules that are so complex that they don't even seem to be able to interpret them themselves. THIS IS FUCKING SCARY! We're in a climate crisis with multiple enemies from big ag to big fossil with their assorted lackeys and billion dollar lobbyist organisations making it hard enough for the rest of us to fix this mess. We have the solution that will solve EV charging in all cities globally without requiring massive grid updates and even making citizens profit on it as a part of the solution. What is your motivation? What are the pain points you’re currently dealing with? Moving to cloud just for the sake of moving to cloud isn’t enough. How can Customer Support teams get value from AI today? In the last 6 months, Anker Bach Ryhl and I have built and onboarded support teams for different iterations of Sam (YC S24). From this, we've learned about in what form factor and for which support teams AI is valuable (and even more about where it isn't). High-level AI solutions can take three different form factors: 1. Full automation 2. Human-in-the-loop/copilot 3. AI-enabled service As a rule of thumb, we've found that the complexity of the workflow often determines the optimal form factor for AI solutions (at least today). This means that if your customer support team deals with a simple task (e.g., answering simple product-related questions), you can likely fully automate it with an AI solution. whereas if your team deals with a more complex workflow (e.g., checking an internal dashboard for customer status and replying differently to customers depending on their status), a human-in-the-loop solution is likely the optimal solution to ensure high quality today. Examples of solutions that fully automate tasks in customer support are AI chatbots and AI call assistants. For copilots, examples are solutions that automatically draft customer responses for the support team to manually review before sending them off. The notion of AI-enabled services in customer support is still relatively new. Shortly, you outsource a task to another company that promises to do it cheaper and faster because it leverages its own AI tools. Sweden has an amazing track-record when it comes to Industrial innovations and the capabillity to make them grow on an international market. Most of these companies who market these inovations are today quite old, some examples: SKF (kullager/ ball bearings), Alfa Laval (separator/ centrifugal separator) used in industrial milk production for example, Bacho (Skiftnyckel/ Wrench). All of these companies prospect and is still working some 100 years after they where founded. There is plenty more but these examples is just to show the great tradition Sweden has to invent and capatilize of these inventions. So, it was with high expactations the Nortvolt company was founded 2015. It should be the European alternative to battery production and compete to the two leading manufactures in the world, both Chinese. Huge amount of money was invested to set up the production and with strong owners like the WW-group it looked good. It is with great disapointment we can make som kind of conslusion at this stage. This week they let go of 1600 employees since they after 9 years hardly has produced any products. It surprises me! With a background as CEO in various Tech-companies I know that time to market is essential and it´s definately has to happen faster than in 9 year. It would surprise me if the current management is not changed. Still I hope the best for Nortvolt, for they and Sweden can do better. #Nortvolt #TechSweden #Innovations #Batteries #Changisneeded

And since we are next to the bar, we are not allowed to have a backdrop.” My reply: “So… What we have is a 10x10 ft piece of carpet?” Michael: "Yup, pretty much." Gave us a pretty good laugh 😆 - * A good example of a normal day pivot in a startup. Adapt and improve. I read this quote from Mews CEO Matthijs Welle and couldn't agree more. "I am still a big believer in the flexibility of remote work. However, we do have to be more explicit in saying that increased levels of flexibility and freedom should result in increased levels of output." alteam, and most of our clients are remote-first startups. We all embrace this, but sometimes, it has been hard not to regularly meet in an office as our model is based on speed, quality, and efficiency. I also like to remind everyone working with me that they shouldn't take remote/flexible work for granted. Let's remember that we are all part of the 5% (?) privileged people in the workforce. Can a barrister work remotely when/where they want? Although I was among the first to work hybrid in my inner circle (since 2015), I have always been attached to the office to design a place that inspires human connections and engages us as a team. We arrange quarterly/monthly in-person meetings, but is it enough to measure people's engagement and performance in the organisation? Though we have access to data to assess everybody's output and online interactions, is it truly as effective as everyday office interactions?
