"In 1950s England, Jane and Prudence are both quietly unhappy and neither fully aware of it. Jane, in her early 40s, is a bored vicar's wife who performs a kind of learned helplessness whenever the prospect of having to actually do something appears. "

Wobble To Death (Sergeant Cribb, #1):
"Peter Lovesey channels the great mystery writers of the late 19th century in this novel, which debuts the quirky but persistent Sergeant Wally Cribb.
The Victorians loved betting on all sorts of offbeat sports, including “wobbles,” a sort of indoor m" Read more of this review » |

This wears its influences on its sleeves - Twin Peaks, obviously, and there are obvious nods to Pynchon, Cormac McCarthy and David Foster Wallace. And...it doesn't add up to anything coherent. It's not even a satisfying unsolved enigma, because nothi ...more | |

“I want to find a terrible secret at the city’s heart
then go all the way back and find the first truths soaked into this land
and further, furthest, I want to walk
in empty space forever right here

“I would like to carve my novel in a piece of wood. My characters—I would like to have them heavier, more three-dimensional ... My characters have a profession, have characteristics; you know their age, their family situation, and everything. But I try to make each one of those characters heavy, like a statue, and to be the brother of everybody in the world.”

“There is only one real misfortune: to forfeit one's own good opinion of oneself. Lose your complacency, once betray your own self-contempt and the world will unhesitatingly endorse it.”

“I will not deny but that the best apology against false accusers is silence and sufferance, and honest deeds set against dishonest words.”

“Everyone underestimates their own life. Funny thing is, in the end, all our stories...they're the same. In fact, no matter where you go in the world, there is only one important story: of youth, loss and yearning for redemption. So we tell the same story, over and over. Only the details are different. ”

Sorry I've fallen so far behind in keeping up with people's reviews. I went through a period of 'pointed stick time' (these are times when I'm convinced that any technology more complex than a pointed stick is too prone to breakdown to be reliable). Through all of September, my computer was in the shop.
I'm getting caught up on my backlog, but it'll likely be some time before I get caught up. So I, as well as my correspondents, will likely have to school ourselves to patience for some time yet.
