When I tried to structure my thoughts to write this review, I discovered that it’s actually very hard to write something about a book I liked but didn’t love. I definitely have no hard feelings towards Thirteen Reasons Why but I also don’t really have anything to rave about. Which makes me feel a little conflicted about the rating. This book will stay with me for a while, it made me think, but it also had its flaws.

I thought the novel was based on an original and great concept. We have a simultaneous narration: We get to hear Hannah’s thoughts through the tapes she recorded, and mixed with that, we see how Clay reacts to the things she says. While that is without doubt the perfect way to tell this story (that can probably be enjoyed even more in an audiobook format), I sometimes found it hard to distinguish their voices. I read a sentence, and when I went over it too quickly, I sometimes had to check back if it was in bold or italic to find out who actually said what. While Clay certainly was a sweet guy, I found him to be almost too nice to be true and compared with Hannah, his character and voice felt rather flat.
Also, I expected this story to make me sad and touch me deeply because, after all, it is a story about missed opportunities, about a life ending much too soon, about guilt and grief. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

But, all in all, despite the fact that I wasn’t really emotionally invested, I simply HAD to know exactly what drove Hannah over the edge. I wanted to know her story, to get an idea what made her feel so depressed and alone. I read in quite some reviews that people thought her reasons to commit suicide were shallow. I don’t agree with that at all. They were her reasons and nobody else’s, and I think that she shouldn’t be judged by them. People don’t always have this big reason behind their decisions. Sometimes small things add up to each other, and when you suffer from depression, as Hannah clearly did, even everyday life can be too much for you to take. It can make everything feel like a chore.
Yet, I also found it difficult to understand why Hannah went to such lengths to record her tapes and make sure everybody received them. It seemed to be more about getting back at the people who hurt her than about closure and explanation. Those people did her wrong, no question, but do they deserve what they got? Do they deserve to live with the guilt of being responsible for Hannah’s death? I’m not sure. But this book definitely showed me that even small things we do (or don’t do) can have a huge impact on somebody else’s life, and that sometimes we should take more time to try to understand the people we deal with everyday – be it at school or somewhere else.
But all things considered, I’m glad that Jay Asher didn’t portray Hannah as a victim. She also had her faults, made wrong decisions and – in the end – gave up.

Now I’m still pondering over one question: What is actually worse? Knowing exactly why somebody killed himself and what role you yourself played in his decision? Or living with the fact that you will never find out what caused his suicide and that your questions will never be answered?

Morgan F Looove this one.

Arlene Oh this is a good one!

Miss Bookiverse hope u like it!

Janina Thanks, I really hope I will! Have only heard good things about it so far.

Jess me too, janina. I´m reading it right now! ^^

Miss Bookiverse Really thoughtful review. I wish it wasn't so long ago that I listened to the audiobook. I didn't have trouble distinguishing the 2 voices because there were actually 2 narrators ;) I agree that the concept of the book is amazing.
I'm glad you accept Hannah's reasons. What you wrote about them is very true and it annoys me a little when people judge her in reviews and write that she didn't really have a reason to kill herself.

Janina Thank you! At the beginning, it was kind of hard to find words, but then I ended up having to say more than I expected ;).
I can definitely see that this would make a great audiobook, listening to it is probably even better than reading it.

~Tina~ I'm still so conflicted about reading this one. Great review hun!

Miss Bookiverse Janina, this book is made to be turned into an audiobook and I'm glad they did such a great job on it. Luckily you can buy it on CD/as mp3s instead of just cassettes ;)

Janina Tina, I think you should give it a try. I still can't decide how to rate it, but I would recommend it. Despite the issue it adresses, it still manages to end on a hopeful note.

Infinite, I've noticed that you're listening to audiobooks quite often. Where do you get your English ones from? I've wanted to try listening to audiobooks for a while, but the ones at Amazon are mostly really expensive.

Flannery I have this audiobook out from the library. Now, I'm definitely looking forward to listening. Great review, Janina:)

~Tina~ I will, thanks Janina. I just have to find the courage, these books have always been hard for me.

Janina Thank you, Flannery. Yes, I really think it's perfect as an audiobook. Tina, hope you like it when you get around to reading it.

Janina And ... I finally made up my mind about the rating ;).

Nic Great review Janina:)

Janina Thank you, Nic!

Miss Bookiverse Janina, I get them from Audible (mostly for review = for free) but they also have this offer where you can sign up and pay 10€ for every audiobook, they have tons of English ones.
Some I also get from my sister :)

Janina Thanks, I'll take a look at that :).

Miss Bookiverse you're welcome :)

Justin Reid i thought the same thing! good book but not great. Still a great read though!

norwayfish I really like this review!

Samantha Pope I think your point that this would make a good audiobook is great. I don't think it works so well as a physical book as I kept having to check back and found the constant toing and froing distracting.

message 24: by Nour (new) - added it

Nour I love the point you made about how it's Hannah's own reasons to why she decided to kill herself even if they seem shallow to us. I read this book called The Pact by Jodi Picoult, and in this book a girl commits suicide. At first I thought that her reasons WERE shallow, but now that I think of it, after reading your review, everyone has their own reasons whether be it small or huge. So technically I just wanted to say thanks for bringing about this point because it changed my perspective. Oh and by the way, The Pact is a good book, I highly recommend it!

Alyssa Word for word what my review would say. I just can't write one, though. Wasn't sure what rating to give it but 3 seems fair.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the review, perfectly sums it up in my opinion.

ClaireC I think her reasons for making the tapes were because of her mental state. Like, she started as a little joke but as she went through she realised what she felt was serious, and how depressed and suicidal she was. In that mental state I doubt she would have thought about the effect of the tapes and concentrated more on making sure that somebody out there knew how she really felt, and what was really going on...

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Felt the exact same way!!! My review has lots of the same sort of thing

Umarie i can relate. i read expectin to tear up a little u know but i didnt. instead i was rather solemn. my biggest peeve was how i couldnt disyinguish them. od read a whole page backwards sometimes. plus i thought clay should have done somethin rather tham cry so much

Violet Nightfall "When I tried to structure my thoughts to write this review, I discovered that it’s actually very hard to write something about a book I liked but didn’t love." ---> Just like me... I like this book so much but... I don't love it! It's too much..

Stephanie Wilson Wow! I'd read your book! That was a perfect review!

Nandini Your review just sums my view on this book up

Kate Clayton I had the same line of thought after finishing.

message 35: by Aica (new) - rated it 3 stars

Aica This review was basically everything I thought but I couldn't put into words.

Cookie Janina, your review is my concrete thought about Thirteen Reasons Why, like you I have no idea how to explain and recommend this book since I still havent gathered my thoughts about it yet, but after reading your review, the words that havent been formed are now out

message 37: by Erin (new) - rated it 3 stars

Erin Thanks for summarizing basically how I feel. I liked it- didn't love it. I'm still confused as to who the party rapist was. Was it Bryce- who Hannah then had the hot tub hookup with? I really enjoyed the format, though. And it definitely got me thinking, and thinking back to High school, especially. We had kids commit suicide my Sophomore year (1997-98). I didn't know any of them well, but it was still devastating for the entire school.

Hritika You've literally put all my thoughts into words!
Loved the review

Dear Janina, I agree completely with your review. Thirteen Reasons Why made me think, a lot. I also came to the conflict about what would be better, not knowing or knowing exactly why someone you knew killed herself. I can't even begin to imagine what Clay must've felt when he thought he was one of the reasons that caused Hannah to kill herself. I liked, but didn't love the book, just like you said. What I did like, was the way Clay is described, I guess I felt more empathy towards him than Hannah.

Rodrigo Torres Janina I agree, I did not like it so much, but it was a good story.

message 41: by hk (new) - rated it 3 stars

hk Hi Janina, great follow up question. For me, I think it would be worse never to know. Neither are great options - who wants to have ANYTHING to do with someone's suicide? But in Clay's knowing, for example, he was able to hopefully help someone else (Skye) in the end by learning from not seeing the signs in Hannah.

ajiective My thoughts too!
