Ethics dilemas are what I kinda love the more about Jake's books. That and the whole "I am the leader but also a kid and I have no idea what I'm doing". And the whole thing about Tom. And this book gives all of that. It also begins to show how our heroes already have serious PTSD.
I didn't really like the confrontation with the book's bad guy. It didn't feel true. But the rest of the book was very good. I often say that Jake's books are my least favorite but so fare they're all been very good. ...more

It's sad because I like the ideas, I like the storyline, and I like the art. But the feelings are not there. I am simply not really invested in those characters... YoSafBridge is a very good character in the show and we don't need to learn more about her past. She is a surviver, that is basically all we need to know. One of the most interesting things about her is not really knowing why she sometimes do the right thing or if/when she is just manipulating people. And I felt that story was really boring, like there was nothing original here. And I didn't like the whole "malcolm reynolds never did anything wrong to me". Like it was already way to close to her being loyal to Mal. I don't know, I felt like many of the character's nuances were totally destroyed by that comics. As much as I loved the one about Books' past (eventhough it was also full of cliches), I really didn't like this one. ...more

In my recent Jane Austin Binge theme, I've found this book again and decided to give it a go... And I'm really happy I did it !
It's a retelling but it's a clever one. One that really does the job and doesn't just tell the exact same story in another context. Many themes are added and mixed with the usual ones and it makes it a very interesting book and a book in its own. I particularly loved all the gentrification theme, it was very well done.
The characters were amazing and I loved them all. Like in the Austen book, their flaws were maybe what I liked the most about them, what made them really human.
And I loved the poems. (I listened to the audiobook narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo and she did such a good job !). ...more

Once again the main characters were women, once again I felt they were exceptionaly well written for a male writer. I loved seeing suburbian moms having to deal with an awful monster... And I loved that it wasn't a perfect story of heroïsm. The horror parts were creepy just the right way and I really felt like I understood every one of those women and could empathize with each of them (eventhough they also frustrated me a lot). I kinda rooted for all the husbands to die so I guess this is a pretty well written book about traditionnal couples also ^^
Hendrix knows how to write and as for his other books, I kinda wanted to read the book in one sitting. I'm probably going to re-read it in a couple years. It's really good and full of little twists. Also I liked how the vampire stuff was done. I love vampires but am not into the sexy stuff that we usually get with them. I prefer my vampires to be parasites, not super sexy boyfriends. ...more
