I found myself looking for chores to do so that I could keep listening to the audiobook, which was also beautifully read.
I appreciated l the shoutouts to classic stories (Alice in Wonderland, Wuthering Heights, etc).
I’m on the fence about the mid-book plot twist. At first, it ticked me off because the foreshadowing was so well hidden. After a while, I recognized why Leckie handled it as she did. Still kind of annoyed though.
The bad(ish): The book reads like a revised history of Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories. If you’re familiar with the original stories, much of the setup and many of the conclusions to plot points will feel familiar. Because of the change in characters and world building, there are some surprises, but mainly, I kept reading because these particular iterations of Doyle/Holmes and Angel/Sherlock are so engaging.
I’d love a sequel that goes further outside of the original Sherlock story plots.

It took me about a quarter of the book to realize that this is, indeed, nothing more than a romance. That said, it's relatively well written with endearing characters, a moderately creative plot, and a pretty setting. I don't regret reading it, but no offense to the author, it will take a major blow to the head before I seek out more by Molly Ringle. ...more
