L'ambientazione è quella di una città di cui non si conosce il nome, ma che ben rappresenta le città italiane del boom economico degli anni Sessanta: una metropoli grigia, spenta e illuminata solo da grandi cartelloni pubblicitari che impediscono anche di vedere la luna. In questo scenario di un grigio imperante, Marcovaldo, che in realtà è un sognatore, non si rassegna e continua a cercare intorno a sé piccoli scampoli di natura: funghi che crescono alla fermata del bus, gatti randagi rifugiatisi in una colonia, ultimo angolo di verde della città, e tanti altri piccoli segni di una natura che non vuole arrendersi all’avanzata del cemento e del fumo delle ciminiere. La vita di Marcovaldo si divide tra le lunghe ore di lavoro come magazziniere in una fabbrica in cui è inevitabilmente sfruttato e il tempo trascorso a casa con la sua numerosa, infelice, povera famiglia composta di una moglie che si lamenta sempre e troppe piccole bocche da sfamare. In ogni racconto, prevalgono un senso fortissimo di nostalgia, una tristezza e una disillusione che potrebbero far pensare ad un libro pesante e pessimista, ma in realtà ogni volta Marcovaldo finisce col cacciarsi in situazioni tragicomiche che strappano sempre un sorriso dolce-amaro e Calvino è un maestro per tratteggiare ciascun racconto con leggerezza e ilarità. Nella California degli anni ‘30 una coppia di braccianti, George e Lennie, molto diversi tra loro, vagano di ranch in ranch in cerca di lavoro, accarezzando il sogno di poter accantonare, un giorno, denaro a sufficienza per poter comprare un piccolo pezzo di terra tutto loro, con una casetta in cui scaldarsi davanti alla stufa, un orto da zappare e da cui raccogliere i frutti del loro lavoro e un angolino in cui allevare conigli e maiali. George é un tipo piccolo e scaltro, mentre Lennie è un gigante forzuto ma con la mente ingenua di un bambino che lo fa cacciare costantemente nei guai. Il legame che li unisce è di amicizia e difesa reciproca, ma sin da subito si percepisce nell’aria che qualcosa di tragico è destinato a spezzarlo. La trama ruota attorno al personaggio di Nora, una donna che inizialmente sembra essere una casalinga devota e sottomessa, che il marito vezzeggia con nomignoli e lusinghe e tratta alla stregua di una bambola, ma che alla fine si libera dalle convenzioni sociali per cercare la propria identità e indipendenza. Ibsen offre uno sguardo critico e ancora attualissimo (quante Nora esistono oggi giorno?!) sul matrimonio, mostrando come molte relazioni possano essere fondate su convenzioni superficiali e mancanza di comunicazione autentica nella coppia. Attraverso il personaggio di Nora, l'autore mette in discussione i ruoli di genere e il concetto di libertà individuale, ponendo in primo piano la ricerca dell'autenticità e dell'autodeterminazione. Al contempo, Ibsen riflette sulla giustezza della Legge, che spesso non concede attenuanti a chi la infrange, anche se a fin di bene. La scrittura di Ibsen è incisiva e piena di tensione emotiva e man mano che passano le ore (la vicenda occupa uno spazio temporale di soli tre giorni) si viene a creare un'atmosfera carica di suspense e conflitto e il dramma interiore di Nora esplode in un finale potentissimo: una semplice porta che, sbattendo, chiude il capitolo di un’esistenza solo apparentemente felice e apre a nuove infinite possibilità di riscatto e rinascita....more

Andavano avanti e indietro, da un muro all’altro, in silenzio, come le mosche di autunno, quando passati il caldo, la luce e l’estate, volano a fatica, stanche e irritate, sui vetri, trascinando le loro ali morte” A raccontare e ricordare con straziante nostalgia la fredda terra natia è la vecchia tata, Tatjana Ivanovna, al servizio della famiglia da cinquantuno anni. Rimasta inizialmente a proteggere la casa, dopo mesi di cammino Tatjana riesce a ricongiungersi con i suoi padroni a Parigi. Ma il suo essere una semplice contadina abituata ai climi freddi del Nord, le impedisce di trovare pace nella metropoli francese, dove la neve non cade mai e l’autunno sembra infinito. Essere stata costretta ad allontanarsi dalla vecchia nobile dimora dove aveva servito per mezzo secolo, dover vedere il declino morale ed economico dei suoi signori, capire che non vi sarà mai un ritorno possibile nella sua amata Russia, tutto ciò la porterà ad un epilogo triste e solitario. Mi piace moltissimo quest’autrice. Anche in poche pagine riesce a dipingere con nitidezza le emozioni dei protagonisti dei suoi romanzi, che spesso vengono amplificate dalle magistrali descrizioni dell’ambiente in cui queste figure si muovono. Primo romanzo della Nemirovsky, scritto quando era poco più che ventenne, contiene già molti segnali della sua abilità narrativa e della sua capacità di scandagliare l’animo umano, mettendone in luce pregi e soprattutto difetti. Yves e Denise si conoscono in un assolato giorno d’estate su una spiaggia del litorale basco. Yves è scapolo, reduce dalla guerra, che gli ha lasciato profondi solchi nell’anima e piuttosto povero. Denise è una giovane madre, sposata, bella e ricca. Entrambi sono in vacanza e lì, tra il profumo della salsedine e dei tamarindi, inizia il loro idilliaco amore clandestino, ma si capisce già da subito che non è destinato a durare. Rientrati nella grigia Parigi, quel sentimento si trasforma progressivamente in qualcosa di ossessivo e soffocante, in un crescendo di eventi che mi ha incollato alle pagine. Molto bello!...more
