May 5, 2024 “The truth is that she’s attracted to me and I find her unappealing. I grow weary of the heartsick looks she sends my way. She’s hardly the type of woman I would choose May 5, 2024 She looked dreamy, happy. He felt guilty because he was using her, in a way, to escape the pain of rejection. But she’d never have to know May 5, 2024 He’d made a terrible mistake when he’d married her. It had been a spur of the moment thing, to spite Sarina for throwing him over. But all it had done was make him aware of how miserable he was. He couldn’t spend the rest of his life tied to this prehistoric woman. He was going to have to approach the subject of a divorce. May 5, 2024 but he was a little embarrassed by the way she looked. She hadn’t even brushed her hair. She looked like a farm worker, plain and uninteresting. He’d always had attractive women around him, women who dressed well and drew men’s eyes. This little frump wouldn’t have attracted a nearsighted pencil-pusher, much less himself May 5, 2024 Marry me,” he coaxed. “I’ll love you until the dark washes over me and carries me away, and the last word I whisper will be your name,” he whispered All Excerpts From

May 1, 2024 Summer had given up dignity long ago, along with trust, love and the remote possibility of a happy ending. She’d put her faith in a murderer. May 1, 2024 “It was just a fuck, Summer,” he whispered. “To take your mind off things.” May 1, 2024 “Sometimes you give up what you love to stay alive.”“Have you ever had to do that?”He turned his head to look at her for so long it should have been dangerous, but he seemed to have a sixth sense when it came to the road. “It’s coming,” he said. May 1, 2024 He’d shamed her, rejected her, destroyed her family home. She even knew he’d planned to kill her. Any tender feelings she might have for him would be burned to a cinder of hatred. May 1, 2024 Don’t look at me like that. You know you’re a job. You were easier than I expected, but in the end it doesn’t make any difference. Everyone’s expendable, May 1, 2024 For the first time in his life he’d climaxed without anyone touching him, without him even being aware of what was happening. May 1, 2024 He’d finally made her cry. He should have held her. Should have turned her in his arms and held her as she wept. But he couldn’t. Instead he let her sink slowly down onto the carpeted floor of the bedroom, a tangle of arms and legs and pain, and he left her there, walking away May 1, 2024 She had a woman’s body—round, soft, comforting. The kind a man stayed with. May 1, 2024 He was death and he suspected she’d been seeking him on and off for most of her life. May 1, 2024 Yes, he would have to break her. Or kill her.Or maybe both. May 1, 2024 If necessary, he was to destroy a priceless piece of Japanese art, culture and history, and execute the woman who held the key to where it belonged. And he wasn’t supposed to think twice about it. All Excerpts From

She’s just so superficial and boring and Christian is just so one-dimensional and boring. She has no personality other than her anxiety, crystals and being superficial.

This author has tons of potential and writes well. I enjoyed the short chapters and the pacing. I just needed the characters to be more fleshed out and relatable.
There were also so many loose ends in the story. Why was Nero running from the police? Why does he not have a last name? How did he and King take over everything? ...more

I liked this book, but didn’t love it. There were things that frustrated me—the plot dragging, how they didn’t recognize each other when they were reunited, Dani’s sudden crisis of conscience in the third act where she became sanctimonious, the lack of chemistry between the MC’s and lack of Six’s POV.
This would be more detailed if this app didn’t suck....more

I am surprised I hadn’t picked this up sooner. I’m a big fan of Civil War and reconstruction-era American history. There is a lot we don’t know that’s been obscured in the history books. I liked how Howard explained her interpretation and liberties that she took in the epilogue. The implication of Vanderbilt both confused and intrigued me, but I appreciated her creative liberties.
This book would’ve been a home run with me if only she had left the white saviorism episode with the Apaches out of the book. It was so implausible and did not age well at all. It reads as offensive nowadays.

Rafe was a complex character with a very interesting and tragic backstory. I really didn’t understand his singleminded need for vengeance considering how his father had treated him though!
Vic was very forgiving and accommodating, not to mention reckless. I liked her, but I wanted Rafe groveling for all he did. Instead he got beat up by the family and that was how it was handled. Not that he didn’t deserve it, but that was a disappointment. Also, there is no way I buy that they could be one happy family after all that!...more

I’m sure I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. I picked it up because it’s set in my neck of the woods. This author’s prose and voice are very good.
There were some inaccuracies that irked me—namely them having explicit phone sex over what would have been, historically, a party line. The sex was gratuitous and gory. The plot was interesting but I would’ve liked to have Wright made aware of the fact that Ridge didn’t do what he thought he did. I wanted to see Wright get his HEA. I like the author’s writing style and the plot kept me intrigued. The h was a real heinous bitch at the beginning. Her torturing Bass when all he was doing (as far as she knew) was trying to protect her was disgusting. I didn’t believe her 180 personality change.
