Luvut ovat lyhyitä ja teksti siirtyy tapahtumasta toiseen salamannopeudella. Tämän vuoksi minkään tapahtuman merkitys ei korostu tai käy selväksi, henkilöihin ei ehdi muodostua juuri minkäänlaista suhdetta eikä kokonaisuudesta saa kunnollista käsitystä. Tässä mennään mahdollisimman vähällä informaatiolla niin henkilöiden, miljöön kuin maailmankin suhteen. Oikeastaan mitään ei selitetä, mitään ei kirjoiteta auki. Esimerkiksi henkilöiden tunteisiin ei viitata silloin, kun jotain mullistavaa tapahtuu vaan vasta kun ollaan jo edetty toiseen asiaan, ja silloinkin niin niukkasanaisesti, että ainakin minun on vaikea uskoa heidän tunteisiinsa. Lukijalle jää käteen ämpärillinen miksi-kysymyksiä, ei juuri muuta. Henkilökuvaus on ristiriitaista erityisesti Sofian kohdalla. Tuntuu siltä kuin Forrest haluaisi luoda yhtä aikaa naiivin, pelokkaan ja ujon 17-vuotiaan ja älykkään, pelottoman ja vahvan tytön, joka on aikuisempi kuin teini-ikäiset yleensä. Sofian ajatuksien ja toiminnan välillä ei tunnu olevan logiikkaa. Derekin osuudet ovat parempia ja hänestä onnistuu muodostumaan edes jonkinlainen käsitys.
On tässä kirjassa jotain hyvääkin: sen tapa lähestyä vampyyrien maailmaa ei ole ihan tavanomaisin. Miljöö ja maailman säännöt herättävät myös mielenkiintoa. Ehkä jopa niin paljon, että saatan lukea seuraavan osan joskus hamassa tulevaisuudessa.
