Niin, asiaan. Gardens of the moon on haastavin kirja, jonka olen lukenut vuosiin. Vähintäänkin haastavin kirja tänä vuonna. Erikson esittelee tässä maailman, joka on niin laaja ja monimuotoinen, että minun oli laskettava teos pöydälle useampaan otteeseen ihan vain ihmetelläkseni hänen mielikuvitustaan ja kykyä pitää tällainen kokonaisuus kasassa. Henkilöitä on runsaasti, kaupunkeja ja muita tapahtumapaikkoja useita; taikuus ja muu yliluonnollinen muodostavat aivan omanlaisensa systeemin; useat juonet kulkevat ristiin ja erikseen ja rinnakkain; näkökulmia on niin monta etten taida pystyä niitä laskemaan; kieli on vaihtelevaa, yksityiskohtaista ja välillä oikeasti vaikeaakin ja koko ajan tapahtuu paljon merkittäviä asioita. Yliluonnollinen maailma on laaja ja todella kiehtova erityisesti siksi, että Erikson ei ole sisällyttänyt maailmaansa erilaisten maagien ja näkijöiden lisäksi muita yleisesti tuttuja olentoja vaan on luonut itse täysin uusia lajeja. Jokaisella lajilla on kaiken lisäksi oma kansa, oma johtaja, oma kulttuuri, oma kieli ja niin edelleen. Oma historia ja eri tavalla rakentuneet suhteet toisiinsa, ihmisiin, hallitsijaan... Lisäksi löytyy jumalia, salamurhaajia, varkaita, poliittisia vaikuttajia, sotilaita, lainsuojattomia ja tietysti hallitsija, joka haluaa valloittaa koko maailman ja pitää sen tiukasti hallinnassaan. Alatte varmasti hahmottaa kuinka runsaasta sisällöstä puhun.
Juonenkulun ja näkökulmien asetelmakaan ei ole tavallisimmasta päästä. Eeppisessä fantasiassa tapahtumia kuvataan useimmiten joko hallitsijoiden ja heidän perheenjäseniensä tai muuten heidän lähellään vaikuttavien henkilöiden näkökulmasta. Toinen yleinen asetelma on aivan tavallinen henkilö, joka tulee yllättäen vedetyksi mukaan suurempaan kuvioon. Erikson ei lähesty asiaa ollenkaan näin. Yhden päähenkilön sijaan on noin 25-30 henkilöä, joita keisarinna Laseenin toimet ja niitä seuraavat tapahtumat jollain tavalla koskettavat. Jokainen heistä osallistuu tapahtumiin tahollaan ja vaikuttaa kokonaisuuteen enemmän tai vähemmän. Voisi ehkä sanoa, että romaanin maailma on päähenkilö, valtava pelikenttä, jonka sisällä romaanin henkilöt yrittävät parhaansa mukaan selviytyä. Keisarinna havittelee kaunista, vaikuttavaa Darujhistanin kaupunkia: ainoaa kaupunkia, joka ei vielä ole hänen valtansa alainen. Saavuttaakseen päämäärnsä hän on punonut monimutkaisen suunnitelman, joka hahmottuu lukijalle hitaasti tapahtumien edetessä useiden eri henkilöiden kautta. Keisarinna itse ei esiinny romaanissa fyysisesti, vaan mielikuva rakentuu hänestä täysin muiden kautta. Tämäkin piirre herätti mielenkiintoni moneen kertaan.
Koska käsiteltävää ja hallittavaa materiaalia on näin paljon, en juuri yllättynyt kun huomasin tekstin olevan jonkin aikaa sekavaa. Tapahtumapaikat ja näkökulmat vaihtuvat niin tiuhaan, että suurinpiirtein 150-200 ensimmäistä sivua tuntuivat yhdeltä sekasotkulta. Lukeminen kävi hitaasti, koska kaikkien palasten hahmottaminen ja yhdistäminen vaati tiivistä keskittymistä. Tämän sekavuuden takia ei kuitenkaan missään tapauksessa kannata jättää kirjaa kesken. Juoni muuttuu selkeämmäksi nopeeasti sitten kun pääsee tuohon 200 sivun paikkeille. Mitä pidemmälle luin, sitä tyytyväisempi olin. Onneksi taistelin tieni loppuun.
Voisin sanoa tästä vielä vaikka mitä, mutta en saa ajatuksiani järkevään asuun. Niin ja pitää lähteä kyläreissulle... Blogissa lisää ihan lähiaikoina. Mutta mutta, kokeikahaan, hc-fantasian ystävät!...more
