Gold and Samson are in love but Simeon is forced to sell Gold to Phineas of face possible destruction. Samson falls for the new trainer and they are soon house champions. Gold is pampered and primed by Phineas. Still the men are slaves and thus only meat to their owners. I'm almost tempted to call this historical fiction. Though the grand champ, he was still owned and was little more than a piece of meat to be used in the arena or the bed. Gold thought himself to be incapable of love until the gladiator, Samson, wins his heart but even that happiness is taken away from the lowly slaves. This book gave a real look at the life of a gladiator/slave. The writing was top notch and the characters made to feel so real. I have mixed feelings about this book. The previous two Slave Breaker books were great and I reccomend reading Lee's story also to wrap up the trilog I have mixed feelings about this book. The previous two Slave Breaker books were great and I reccomend reading Lee's story also to wrap up the trilogy. I personally didn;t like the character Lee so took a long time reading this. I don't care for whiners and Lee was a terrible whined and so insecure that I did not identify with any of his character traits. The end of the book was great and werll worth plodding through the oceans of tears Lee was constant spilling. The characters from the previous books...Holden, Bran, Yves, Jer along with the rest were fully and well developed in this book. The love these people shared freely was intense. Lee just stuck in my craw....more
