When Faye knocks a man off his bike he loses his memory and his ability to talk. She takes him home from hospital and cares for him. And there it all takes off. Faye is a Jewitch and deals in magic and spells. She is a potter but makes pieces that aren't quite perfect. She had a troubled childhood with a mother who was mentally ill and a father who did not protect Faye. She has quite a few hang ups because of it.
Greg as they decide to call the knocked over man, has no background that he can remember. He fears he might have something to do with the Paper Boys - a group that have been terrorising the Jewish community. So Greg sets out to explore with the help of Nelly who has a shop next door to Faye. Nelly is around eighty and quite a character. Will Greg ever find out who he is and what he does. And of course and attraction is growing between Faye and Greg. So if only he can withstand her somewhat crazy magical experiments.
This is your rom com read, but it is much more. There is much exploration of anti - Semitism, and the odd thinking of those who persecute. It is about intolerance of one group of people for another. Then there is the issue of our past influences on our lives and how perfection seems to be the goal. Whereas we miss the beauty of imperfection.
The characters are interesting, the plot intriguing but with little clues along the way that intuitively lead me not to be surprised at how it all played out at the end. And of course love wins out. An enjoyable read....more

It is a delightful step out into an entirely different story. It is set up on the Lost Coast of the Northern West Coast of the USA.
Narrowing in further, it is set in the most wonderful Victorian mansion. Note the front copy of the book. I want to visit it, it is full of books and hidden nooks. It is to this house that Emily arrives at after being summoned by her Uncle after her grandmother dies.
Emily is an aspiring editor in New York and it takes some pulling to get her to come to Lost Coast Literary, the name of her grandmother's house.
Emily has been estranged from the Lost Coast side of her family, and as she carries out some of her grandmother's wishes she becomes acquainted with them and the local community, and did I say - the house!
I'll leave the rest for you if you by chance read this book. I suspect any lover of books and a bit of magical realism would enjoy it. As Ellie Alexander I note on her website runs writing courses for aspiring writers, I believe within these pages too may be some hints.
A fun book to read and have your heart touched by. ...more
The Lights of Sugarberry Cove by Heather Webber is a sweet read. Well it is set in Sugarberry Cove after all!
It's about a mother and her two daughtersThe Lights of Sugarberry Cove by Heather Webber is a sweet read. Well it is set in Sugarberry Cove after all!
It's about a mother and her two daughters told from the two daughters point of view. Sadie and Leala. All three are in hard places of various kinds and it takes coming together to sort out all the grief and events that have walled them off from each other and love.
There is a variety of characters who all play there part in making this story a heart warming one with moments of grief. I especially loved the wisdom of Uncle Camp and the child joy of Tucker.
And is has a smidgeon or more of magical realism, something I am a little partial to. I didn't see how the final twist of this aspect was going to turn out but I loved it.
Family, found family, guilt, grief and love all mingle to make this a book I was sorry to see the ending arrive. ...more
