Nora is really not feeling fulfilled or happy in her marriage and it seems her husband is exactly the same. She has had a tough upbringing that has left her rather stand offish and not trusting of people, especially friendly overtures, her early childhood also put her off having children because she felt she wouldn't make a good mother.
Her sister - much younger - is struggling unbeknown to Nora. Kiki was just a toddler when they lost there parents and life was even stranger still from then on. Depression dogs Kiki and in spite of great friends and a beautiful young son, she is just not coping. When Nora gets a call to come and take care of Ted because Kiki is ill, its one of the biggest challenges she has faced.
I found this a really page turning book, staying up at night to finish it. I loved the characters and their struggles. The themes of mental illness, loneliness, marriage difficulties, childhood wounds on the one hand and friendship, kindness, and being willing to be honest and explore really difficult issues. My heart went out to Ted, I loved how Nora grew and changed.

It is full of heart animal wise.Phoenix Rose is an amazing character - such a gifted teacher and loyal friend. I am not a big road trip reader but this one won my heart. Loved the final ending. I also liked the whole exploration of neurodiversity and felt a lot more educated at the end of it. ...more

To some extent we all like money, but how far would we go to grow our money, how much risk would we take. And what about if it looks too good to be true! Some of the people in this book find out.
Izzy is a wonderful character, taken for a ride by her fiancé Brad who has red lights flashing all around him. He is promoting a scheme for lots of local people to invest with him, but what happens when it all goes pear shaped? It brings a lot of distress and questioning from those who were involved in giving their money to Brad. And of course the police are knocking on Izzy's door, because Brad has disappeared.
There are characters I didn't like at the beginning but as they began to re assess their values and what they really wanted out of life, I began to think differently of them. I liked the small town feel, the relationships that built and the ones that broke.
I was engrossed in the story and found it well paced and engaging. I was happy with most of the book but had questions about the those who had engineered the scam. I wanted more about the ugly goings on in the background that stayed in the background.
However ultimately I felt this was a book about victims standing up for themselves and getting on with their lives rather than wallowing in the bad things that happened to them....more

That's just me, it was 3 stars for me but I can see it deserves more because will suit many another reader....more

She might be strong but she is about to become stronger. Will the killer get her or will she get him? She has time and she uses it well.
It's about family and found family and all that part is heartwarming and great. I enjoyed it.
It felt a little long although I suppose that was building up suspense. I might have skipped here and there - I don't want to know much about what the killer is up to!
So anyway, a book that kept drawing me back to read it....more
