I love nature and hate humanity. Even more than I did before.
This may be, along with The Velveteen Rabbit, one of the best children’s book I’ve ever read, if not the best period; can’t decide which I love more. This was pure devastating PERFECTION, Wilde style. To achieve so much, in so few pages… simply MAJESTIC. 6 stars, easy.
Equally good for children AND adults. I actually think this is an adult’s book disguised as a children’s; because any child can enjoy it, truly, but ultimately, only a grown seasoned adult can understand its true meaning; and that’s exactly where lies its devastating beauty.
I think anything else said would be spoilerish, so trust me on this and just read it; you can thank me later. Not for nothing it’s considered in many lists as one of the best “Children’s” book ever written.

Little Lazlo is afraid of the dark, usually at night, but even during the day. Behind every opaque object, behind every shadow, a share o Ooh scary!
Little Lazlo is afraid of the dark, usually at night, but even during the day. Behind every opaque object, behind every shadow, a share of darkness always lingers. Big house, big shadows, big fears; and especially of the basement, where no light EVER reaches. And a scary voice, calling from its depth..
Well, this was a very nice spooky short read! Perfectly suited for children, but equally enjoyable for any healthy adulescent. The illustrations simply gorgeous, and marvelously balanced; perfectly sketched drawings that truthfully transmit that especial vibe of protective light, and frightful darkness.
A fairly enjoyable read, not exactly a favorite mind you, but nearly as good as a book like this can possibly can get; and if I didn’t give it 5 stars, it’s because it just didn’t feel as such.

Mother Duck lovingly nurtures all her eggs, and in time, a whole bunch of lovely baby ducks hatch from their shells; Man, I Can Relate to Uglyness.
Mother Duck lovingly nurtures all her eggs, and in time, a whole bunch of lovely baby ducks hatch from their shells; except for some strange reason, one of them stands out among from the rest, a grey Ugly baby duck that is so much different to the rest. Shunned by his siblings, his mother and the whole animal community, the tiny baby duck finds himself utterly lost, and hopeless. Oh no! What will become of him?
I think this is a great story, for personal reasons I couldn’t enjoy that much.
First, even though I’ve never read it or watched the film, I somehow knew pretty much all the story and its ending. A massively spread children’s story and some general culture will do that I suppose, and I guess the grand majority, if not all of us, were fed this story in our infancy, whether or not we can remember exactly when. And sadly, that made it way too predictable; and that beautiful unexpected ending, which would’ve totally blown me away and added an extra star if I hadn’t know it, held no surprise at all, been aware of it beforehand.
Second, one thing about the premise didn’t quite convince me. (view spoiler)[At first, the Mother loved the Ugly duckling, but then she started to hate him because of peer pressure? That sounded wildly unconvincing, even for fiction. My instincts tell my former child would’ve totally missed that, but sadly my adult inner child didn’t buy that this time. (hide spoiler)] Also, there was a visit to some cabin with an old lady and a cat, and some other stuff which felt completely unnecessary and totally dragged the story. Idk, maybe a big chunk of this story is symbolical; which would explain why I didn’t get any of it. YES, not even my adult self gets symbolism.
But anyway, all in all, and despite my many reservations, I still think this is a great story; its reputation certainly precedes it. And any child should probably LOVE it, or any adulescent, capable of overlooking a few things.
¡Oh, no!

Once upon a time a little green dude lived high upon a cave. He hated Christmas so much, he decided to steal all the presents for himself. This is the story of the Grinch, and how he stole Christmas.
This was one lovely cutesy tale, and a real pleasure to finally know this famous story that so powerfully personifies Christmas. Being kind of a Grinch myself, in truth I can’t say I loved this book, or that it changed me into a crazed Christmas fan; but I didn’t hate it, and it was certainly endearing, and enjoyable, to an extent. The drawings of the Who people and specially the tiny little Cindy Lou were adorable, watching the “reindeer” was hilarious, and even loved some of the funny rhymes too, sometimes.
A very powerful short story with beautiful pictures that perfectly conveys that special Christmas vibe. Any kid or adult with a Christmassy heart should love it, and deeply. Recommendable, and worthy of the half hour or less it takes to read it. Looking forward to someday reading more of Dr. Seuss too.

Aguafiestas.

Flora Belle Buckman is a cynic nerdy kid, fascinated with comics, and especially with her favorites about horrible accidents and amazing superheroes. One normal day like any other, minding her own business, she notices her neighbor cleaning her garden, and accidentally vacuuming a poor innocent squirrel. In the most unexpected turn of events, the little thing somehow survives, and is born anew as Ulysses, mighty super hero squirrel!
This was an awesome little thing, and a fantastic combination of genres, intermittently changing from novella to comic strips. Funny, with a lot of quotable moments, and overall quite memorable; but for reason I can’t quite explain I didn’t love it. Maybe the extracts from “Terrible Things Can Happen To You”, “The Amazing Incandesto” or “The Criminal Element” got too repetitive, maybe Flora’s cynicism or her mother Phyllis’s cruelty became too much, maybe the ending felt a bit unconvincing, and underwhelming. I dunno. I have a whole bunch of highlights and lovelt moments I take with me, many laughs all through, I have the endearing George Buckman and William Spiver, and I have the adorable Ulysses saving the day, and still I didn’t love it, and I just KNOW I should have. Weird. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time, or I was in the wrong one.
But anyway, I’m positive any kid or adult with a child at heart can overlook all that and love this quirky little story quite plenty. DiCamillo really knows her stuff. Easy a four or five stars methinks, for the lucky illuminated ones.

No sé.

After leaving Hotel Denouement and every single character from the past behind, the morally gray Baudelaires travel to Olaf-Land; a Cordial SADNESS.
After leaving Hotel Denouement and every single character from the past behind, the morally gray Baudelaires travel to Olaf-Land; a remote isolated island in the middle of the oceans; during their stay they meet Ishmael, the unquestionable leader of the place, and many other passive villagers stranded on the island. Away from everyone and everything, the orphans start living a peaceful life for once in their miserable lives, and they befriend Friday, a lovely young islander. A brief respite of uneventfulness takes place; until King Olaf breaks free from his prison cage and...
End of the line. No more questions, except for all the ones that were left unanswered. VFD means Volunteers Fire Department, period. Yet it may also mean Vaporetto of Favorite Detritus, among many other things. And the sugar bowl; well, what sugar bowl? Life doesn't have all the answers, and we have to live with it. LOVED Friday, a tender soul bent on protecting the orphans and helping them adjust to their new life on the island. I have MIXED feeling regarding Ishmael, a deceitful facilitator that hides many secrets and never *forces* anyone to do anything, specially about rocking the boat. HATED Olaf, a totally convincing pregnant villain (view spoiler)[ that finally met his ultimate end. Kind of sad really. Gonna miss the old bastard. (hide spoiler)] The flawed Baudelaire orphans still noble enough, always with the best intentions in their hearts; although not always making the right decisions, especially regarding taking sides in schisms, and many other things.
This sequel was sometimes dull, yet also quite entertaining and full packed in several occasions, especially during the middle and end. I thought I was going to read a Hitchhikers ending here, so I’m sincerely happy being gravely mistaken. The ending was not the best, yet not the worst either. Disappointed with never getting my long awaited answers, sure, but I’ll learn to live with it. We don’t always get all the answers we want, but we can always imagine them. It was marvelous reaching a final conclusion to this extensive series of unfortunate events. The orphans ever strong and reaching some kind of *closure* to all their misfortune, especially with Beatrice. An open ending for sure, but all things considered. a fairly welcomed one.
Godspeed people. And like Lemony warns ever so often, if you want a happy ending, better pick another book!

After leaving Gorgonian Grotto and Fiona the mycologist behind, the self-sustaining Baudelaire travel to Hotel Denouement; the la Denouement SADNESS.
After leaving Gorgonian Grotto and Fiona the mycologist behind, the self-sustaining Baudelaire travel to Hotel Denouement; the last meeting place of the secretive VFD; during their travel they meet Dewey, a sub-sub-librarian and secret caretaker. The orphans then start working as flâneurs to secretly gather intel, and they encounter almost every single secondary character from the past. A brief respite of stagnation takes place; until Olaf arrives at the hotel and, I hate to sound repetitive but, calamity strikes again.
I can’t hardly believe it. VFD still means Volunteers Fire Department! Wow. This is so… disappointing?! LOVED seeing Justice Strauss again, and Jerome Squalor; two past caretakers that have grown since their last appearance and now actively fight to help the orphans. LIKED Dewey some, despite his short lived role. Totally HATED Olaf, treacherous villain that likes to quarrel with loyal girlfriends and harpoon defenseless victims. Also HATED Esme, a backstabbing girlfriend who likes to wear ridiculous lettuce bikini and spoil bratty stepdaughters. And HATED Carmelita Spats, an obnoxious ballplaying cowboy superhero soldier pirate. And let’s not forget Charles, Sir, Nero, Hugo, Colette, Kevin and several others, who were also there. The Baudelaire still noble enough as ever, but suffering internally again after being forced to use despicable tactics, such as disguising, harpooning and *accidentally* torching the place; and wondering just how different they truly are to dear Countie Olaf.
I have mixed feelings regarding this sequel. I found the first half to be quite boring and repetitive, luckily the second half was actually quite entertaining and full packed. It was marvelous seeing the reunion of almost every single character the series had so far. And their fate a big question mark after their flaming escape. The sugar bowl still ever elusive; the orphans and Olaf sailing to an uncertain future. And the final conclusion, just waiting on one more final read.

No puedo creerlo. ¡VFD sigue significando Voluntarios Departamento contra Fuegos! Wow. Esto es tan... ¡¿decepcionante?!

The orphans then start a perilous descent to find the freaking sugar bowl, and they befriend Fiona, a brilliant mycologist and stepdaughter of Widdershins. A brief respite of hesitation takes place; until they find Olaf in the cave and, I never saw this coming but, calamity strikes again.
Allright! For once in my life I wasn’t duped! VFD really does mean Volunteers Fire Department; but it also means Volunteer Factual Dispatches, and Verse Fluctuation Declaration! Just WOW! I’m hardly confused at all! LOVED Fiona, a voracious reader, repairwoman and brilliant mycologist, at least in the beginning. Also LIKED Widdershins, a never hesitating captain that loves to repeat his personal motto. I have MIXED feelings regarding Fernald, the deceitful Hook-Handed man. Totally HATED Countie Olaf, a laughing maniac who likes to throw orphans into brigs and poison prisoners with lethal fungi. Also HATED her Royal Esmeness, a treacherous girlfriend who likes to wear ridiculous dresses and whip people around with her tagliatelle grande. And HATED Carmelita Spats, an abhorrent ballerina that loves to torture enslaved rowing children with endless tap dancing and horrible singing recitals. The Baudelaire fugitives still unconditionally caring for each other, working together to uncover all the secrets of VFD, and desperately trying to reach the last meeting place of the secretive organization.
A very interesting sequel. The self-sustaining Baudelaire still a strong team as ever; Violet, Klaus and Sunny equally resourceful and sharing the spotlight. Sunny almost buying it; Fiona a lovely addition to the series and a total wildcard; and Olaf, ever more malicious and cunning, and now even in possession of a lethal biological weapon.
