Yorkshire, 1943. Petty officer Lily Baines is part of the Wrens, and one of the best radio specialists. Day after day enclosed in a cold cubicle, browsing and listening frequencies and static in hopes of catching a tiny glint of enemy information or movements, allowing the british forces to retaliate or prevent an attack. Not without much success; until one day she catches a radio transmission of a young US officer, Matt Jackson, in an allied submarine reporting a devastating attack. Nothing particularly uncommon in the midst of a worldwide war, except the transmission, is from 2023.
This was a neat historical fiction short story, with a bit of sci-fi and time travel elements. Really enjoyed the back and forth between Lily Baines and Matt Jackson, the characters felt fleshed out and real, allowing me to care and root for them during the short time provided. Some very lovely moments and quotes. Decent pacing and a very heartfelt ending. This took me quite a long time to finish since I’m not transitioning a particular WWII affection wave, but it can be easily finished within two hours I think. My first Kate Quinn and a great sampler before someday attempting ‘The Rose Code’, or ‘The Alice Network’. The author also mentions ‘The Bletchley’ Girls by Tessa Dunlop in the afterword. I find this very cool, since it’s not like my tbr is overflowing already.

"Háblame Srta. Rose. Sólo hablame."
Yorkshire, 1943.

1850’s, Cauca Valley, Colombia. Efrain is the proud and joy of his loving parents. María is a fragile distant cousin, adopted by Efrain’s parents after her mother’s sudden passing. The two little younglings have loved each other since childhood, with time making their love only stronger. Efrain and María’s only desire is to be together, but life invariably gets in the way. Efrain must travel abroad to finish his studies, and María must wait for his return, with the danger of the heart disease that killed her mother ever looming on her shoulders.
I read this book maybe fifteen years ago and the only thing I remember distinctly is that it broke my heart in tiny million pieces that never fully mended. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to let it happen again just to write a slighter detailed review. A work considered a masterpiece of the spanish american romanticism, and one of the greatest milestones in Colombian literature. Highly recommendable if you wish to have your heart beaten to a pulp, or make a dear friend cry.

Berlin 1942, middle of WWII, beginnings of the Holocaust. Bruno is a little boy of barely nine years old, son of a very well standing german family. His life passes relatively uneventful until one day his father is appointed commander in a faraway region. Bruno, his sister Gretel and his parents are compelled to relocate to Out-With, to a much smaller house, forsaking family and friends, and sacrificing everything for the important rank promotion.
In this new house isolated from the rest of the world, Bruno finds a small window that allows him to see at the distance an incredibly large area with tiny little huts; and an endless number of tiny little figures dressed in a curious striped outfit. Mature, old people... and children. In a huge wire fenced field.
A superb holocaust historical fiction, and a must read alongside the Diary of Anne Frank. Two unique and different perspectives of a same tragedy. A novel about the cruelties of war, and the self invented differences that lead humanity to separate itself. So very powerful. Heartbreaking and painful as few others. Highly recommendable!
*** Still remaining, the movie (2008).
