Plus, I'm still at awe how my favorite NETFLIX episodes corresponds to my favorite book short stories. And I'm not even jumping in a bandwagon of Jibaro superfans. I liked "The Very Pulse of the Machine" more, though "Jibaro" is also crazy good.
Anyways, my highest recommendations for this series!...more
Love, Death and Robots is a title that probably everyone who’s at least a bit into sci-fi heard because of very successful NETFLIX adaptation. Me too Love, Death and Robots is a title that probably everyone who’s at least a bit into sci-fi heard because of very successful NETFLIX adaptation. Me too – first contact and first love had been watching the anthology series. While doing so, I recognized a few familiar names in the credits, and that peaked my interest. I mean, when you see names like John Scalzi or Alastair Reynolds – you get interested by default, right?
It probably would be nice to re-tell and give my brief opinion on each and every short story, yeah? But I’m a lazy one and I won’t do it, duh. Instead, I’ll say that the most amazing feature of this whole collaboration or a project, whatever you call it, had been such an accurate depiction of each and every story. Yes, sometimes there are few minor, very minor differences. But in general – the level of commitment by all the studios to keep each and every word accurate is nothing short of impressive.
Another fun thing had been realizing that my favorite short stories in the book are exactly the same ones as their animated counterparts. That’s “Suits”, “Sonny’s edge”, “Lucky thirteen”, “Beyond the Aquilla Rift”. Aaaaand of course “How the yoghurt took over”. Can’t imagine anyone but Scalzi having enough craziness for a story like that.
In a nutshell – a delightfully good collection. It might not have a huge WOW effect for me, but personally I think that’s more due to watching all those great stories a few times before finally getting to read them. 5* ...more

If you watched the movie and only then decided to read this book... Well, don't. You won't find Rambo you hoped to see here. He's not a war hero, a vigilante or just a dude who wants to be left alone. He's a total asshole and a murderous lunatic. Disgusting!
I also couldn't believe this book is by the same Morrell who wrote Murder as a Fine Art and other books in Thomas de Quincey series. The quality of writing here is pretty low, although being his debut novel, I might see it as mitigating circumstances.
Still, don't waste your time on this book. Watch the movie and pretend it is not based on the book. 2*. ...more

Sure, 9Back again in an old Land Rover, together with Robin and Corm, I can only say that I yet again enjoyed a lot connecting with the couple again. Sure, 944 pages is quite a lot, especially for a detective, but I actually can approve the count. The current case is a 40-year old, dusty and forgotten, and in order to crack it lots and lots of work had to be done. I actually liked the meticulous writing of each and every little step and breakthroughs the couple of detectives had to take, resulting in that huge amount of pages. I usually have a problem with some other books of this genre because of exactly the opposite reason - everything moves so fast and gets solved so swiftly, that you might think that murder investigation is a very quick and easy job.
The only reason I'm downgrading this to 4 stars (4 really strong stars, to be precise) are these two reasons: first, everyone Strike and/or Robin interviews talks lots and loads about the events that happened 40 years ago. I, for instance, wouldn't remember something that transpired three years ago in a so crystal clear way these people - elder people - do remember after living almost half a century after these events, so I consider it a bit far-fetched. The second one is the villain. I just didn't buy h**. Can't imagine that level of neglect in police work.
And finally - a short comment on that online shitstorm and all those 1* reviews.
I really do not get what's the fuss about it. My only logical explanation is that these people, who engage in screaming out loud about this book, either have nothing better to do, or they are pretty much unstable. I've read the book intently and my honest experience is that there is absolutely no reason to despise it.

I mean, a trilogy, how I perceive it, is three books, three parts of a single story, unified by one or more main characters, usually plus some secondary characters and a consistant plotline, which, more or less, starts at the first book, later evolves and the final part brings a closure. I might be jumping ahead too much, as I'm already reading the third book, though my review is only about the second one but still. There's nothing in this book, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AND NO-ONE, that has at least remote connection to the "Altered Carbon", except Takeshi Covacs. And even he is a middle aged afroamerican/caribbean dude in this book. It's a perfect stand-alone novel, this one, and the third book is a pre-history. So, as far as the story goes, it is quite safe to say that the story starts and finishes with Altered Carbon. Sort of.
Now a few words about the book itself. It's a slower read than the first one, it gets too concentrated on minor details at one point around the middle, and the story is much, much less noir detective. Actually, it's more alike to a military sci-fi than a noir detective, but the plot is decent enough to tag along for a ride and in the end it grips you quite well. I might have enjoyed more answers/explanations, but they weren't necessary and not getting them served on a plate doesn't actually matter.
Takeshi is still Takeshi, but what I really liked is the fun feeling, that Richard Morgan is a pacifist. I've got a few drops of this feeling while reading Altered Carbon, but as this book is much more concentrated on military, rebellions and war in general, no wonder that I've felt it much more in this book. So yeah, the dude who writes all that gory murder and torture sequences is a pacifist. Quite an oxymoron, wouldn't you agree?
"Broken Angels" might not have that glitter and appeal of its predecessor, but it is a solid book nevertheles, and if you enjoyed the first book of the series, this one should definitely be on you list too. A solid 4*. ...more

a) asimiliavosi su žmonėmis (nes, pasirodo, maišymasis tarp rūsių buvo įmanomas ir didžioji dauguma iš mūsų savo genome nešiojamės apytikriai nuo 1,8 iki 2,6 % iš neandertaliečių kilusių genų); b) mes juos sunaikinome fiziškai; c) ilgą laiką sugyvenome greta ir taikiai, o jie paprasčiausiai išmirė dėl demografinių problemų (konkurencija su protingesniais mumis irgi, aišku, nepadėjo, bet shit happens, čia ne mūsų kaltė); d) dėl kitoniško imuniteto neatlaikė mūsų atneštų bakterijų ir parazitų; e) klimato pokyčiai, dėl kurių neandertaliečiai nesugebėjo prisitiakyti prie laikmečio ir pasikeitusių taisyklių;

It'sIn this book's end word JK Rowling, aka Robert Galbraith, admitted that Lethal White had been perhaps the most challenging book she ever written. It's quite easy to agree with her. There are lots and lots of acting characters, THREE active case-lines that inevitably entertwine between themselves and if that's still not enough for you - somehow she/he manages to wrap them all very neatly. I have to admit I have no doubt, that it really takes a lot of effort and wits and it's not a job that any decent writer could manage. So, yet again, hats of for a great job, and, well, I'll keep it short:
• There's Strike and his prosthesis; • There's Robin and her naivete; • There's Robin and Matthew and after more than 10 years together, they still can't sit down a friggin' talk like grownups FOR ONCE; • There's pubs, football, famous locations; • There's engaging muder cases; • There's that meticulous, slow evidence gathering and piecing them together; • There's superb secondary characters and even a team of detectives;
Really, what's not to like here? Well, it's the ending, after reaveling the culprits. No spoilers here, so I'll just say that it felt a bit forced and less realistic than the whole book had been before. Also, I had fun reading this book, but still it is tad too long for me. Maybe there's too much of that meticulous, slow evidence gathering I've mentioned before.
Still, it's a very very good book, and these 4* are well deserved and it is certainly more 9/10 than 8/10. Go and read it, I mean it!...more

That said, tikrai labai faina knyga, nuostabi idėja sujungti šešis skirtingus asmenis laiko tekmėje. ...more

This b"Utopia" is a a bookshelf that I've shelved this book in, but it is a much more complicated situation here with Zenna Henderson's "Pilgrimage". This book is not an utopia per se, but I've simply have no idea which genre it could be considered, so.. Here we are.
This is a really warm, unrushed soft sci-fi story. Nothing bad happens in this book and in those few cases there are shades of unhappiness, misery, accidents or pure bad luck, everything turns out to be well and fine. People in this book are (mostly, except for some secondaries) nice, smart, loving and carefree, and everything is all right for them and then the book ends. Maybe qualifying this book as an utopia isn't so very wrong then, huh?
The plot is quite simple, really. A starship crashes on Earth some hundred or so years ago, The People of that starship fleeing their own planet because of some unspecified cataclysm. The lifepods fire away at few different locations, meaning there are few diverse groups of The People on Earth now, unnecessarily aware of the other groups also surviving. Oh, and they - The People, as they call themselves - just happen to look like us. Exactly like us. To the extent of interbreeding with us. And they have some minor supernatural powers, like levitation, superempathy, telepathy, etc. And they live here, happily, hiding their capabilities from The Outsiders - thats us - because they (us) are not very kind with those, who are different. Thats it. Thats the story in a nutshell, which consists of six loosely intertwined stories that mostly depicts the lives of The People and a few Outsiders that came into contact and know of their special powers.
Despite being quite simple, this book still has lots of charm. I can't divulge much about it without spoiling, but know this: if you look for light, fun, heartwarming story with a dash of science fiction or maybe even fantasy, but you don't want the usual components like evil warlords, supervillains, wars, catastrophes, blasters, FTL, deep space, drama, yada yada yada, look no further, this is a perfect read for you....more

...more
