Ok, if you read the last volume, you know that Alana's baby didn't make it. So, once the shock wears off, what exactly happens next? Now, I know this is touchy territory for a lot of people, but Vaughn went there anyway. Late-term abortion. If nothing else, you probably heard the sound bites about during the last US election. Good times, good times... Personally, I am 100% for late-term abortions. And for those of you out there that actually believe that means doctors pull 9 month old healthy babies from wombs and put them into a wood chipper, then I doubt anything I or anyone else could say will make a difference. But. For the rest of you? Here's why someone who has had 4 unwanted pregnancies, but didn't get abortions for any of them (*waves to kids*), would support another woman's right to choose to end her pregnancy late in the game. Because I couldn't imagine how horrible and hard it would be to keep carrying my dying baby inside of me for months. Months! And you know your child won't survive. But you can't help them, and you know that your child's suffering hasn't even begun yet. Won't begin, until you give birth to them. Life is cruel like that sometimes. Children die. And parents grieve...for the rest of their lives. I personally believe that if you are ever in that situation and want to carry the baby to term, then that's your choice. But I also believe that a woman should have the option to begin the grieving and healing sooner.
At any rate, I thought Vaughn dealt with this subject in a respectful way.

The stuff with The Will was short but still made an impact on the story. You get a peek at his origin story, while also adding another potentially explosive new personality into the mix!
I love Petrichor. Even if she is a tad grumpy. But she gets to shine like a badass during Vol. 8, and there are some interesting developments that...well, spoilers. Sorry.
Due to the nature of Alan's pregnancy, there's a rather huge, and spoilery, shock in store for everyone. Again...sorry.

Oh, and you know how I wasn't quite as moved at the end of the last volume, while all the rest of you were crying so hard you had snot bubbles coming out of your nose? Well. The panel below got me. I read that scene and I made this choking noise out loud. huup-huup-errk-gaak-uuuuh

I mean, everything about this collection was fantastic, but the stuff with Lois & Clark and Selina & Bruce just hit me in all the perfect places. Clark dressed as Batman wearing his glasses over the cowl? <--I don't know if anything will ever top that image for me.

This is the Batman that I've been waiting for and I honestly cannot rave about it enough.

And by really good ending, I mean it could have been a bit less rushed. But if you consider that Kittredge was (I believe) planning for this title to go on longer than it did, it was actually excellent. All the loose ends were tied up, and there was quite a lot of character growth that I wasn't expecting - especially from Eve's mother.
I was very pleased by not only the explanations given about the past but also the new mysterious rash of killings that were happening in town. The new sheriff turned out to be a good edition, with everything in the story coming full-circle about him in a way I didn't actually expect at first.

Everything comes full circle as Neela and Ivar both fight to save the universes, time itself, and each other. Oh, and all the weird, unexplained stuff that has happened in the past two volumes? It all comes together in this one.

My favorite part might have been all the alternate Ivar's and Neela's in the multiverse, but there was really a lot to like about volume 3. It's just that I can't say much without spoiling the whole thing.

This volume has Harbinger: Omegas 1-3 and Bleeding Monk 0. The latter is the most interesting (to me) because it gives you the origin of the Bleeding Monk. The former is just the inside scoop of Tony taking over the world as Peter zones out on drugs. <--it sounds far more exciting than it actually was to plod through Peter's inner monologue as he wah, wah, wah-ed his way into a stupor. Tony's inner thoughts weren't much better, though. You know how some people get drunk and think you want to hear them postulate about how they got to this place' in their life? <--Tony Harda in this book.
The Bleeding Monk origin was at least more informative than the Omega stuff, but unless you're just some sort of a massive fan of these characters, I'm not sure this would be a very impressive volume. Still, I've come this far, so as long as the library has copies of this title, I'll probably continue with it.

The villain is fairly stupidThis is really a fun and cute romance-y sort of comic for fans of Rogue & Gambit's on-again/off-again relationship.
The villain is fairly stupid and her motivations are extremely murky, but if you know that going into this one it may not be so bad. Think of Ring of Fire as more of a rom-com(ic) and less of an action comic, I guess. But for what it is, I thought it was adorable.
So, due to convenient plot stuff, Rogue and Gambit get sent on a mission to pose as a couple seeking relationship therapy on this island full of suspicious goings-on.
If you think this is the sort of story that has these two snipping at each other while secretly pining for the other's affection, then you've kinda hit the nail on the head. If that's not your bag, skip this one. I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff, though. Recommended for fans of the kissy-face stories....more

The main storyline is that Peter and his group of superpowered misfits are going to take on Tony and his group of superpowered highly trained misfits. It goes better than expected, to be honest.
Here's the thing, I just feel like this wasn't any different from the last few volumes in terms of what was actually happening. Chris gets pissy, Faith is overly bubbly, Tony and Peter fight, there's a ton of destruction, and the group seems to splinter somewhat towards the end.

I can't say much with spoiling this one, but if you're a fan of this title, you really need to hang on till it's over. The beginning is slow and draggy and then sort of meanders into this crazy fever dream. (view spoiler)[Which is basically exactly what it is because Harda has our plucky band of heroes trapped in a dream state. So. (hide spoiler)]

It all made sense eventually, and I'm still looking forward to reading the next one, but I don't think this was the greatest representation of this title.

Midway through this edition, it gets hijacked by part of the Flash/Button thing, and it just gives you enough of a snippet to whet your appetite (or not, in my case) for whatever the hell that event is supposed to be.
It also gets hijacked by a story with Swamp Thing. <--completely worth it! Very cool issue. Read it.

Ok, ok, ok. Even though I knew it was coming? THIS: (view spoiler)[ Dawwww! Omg. All my childhood dreams came true in one panel. Thank you, Tom King.
I Am Bane was waaaaay better than it had any right to be, in my opinion. Bane has never really impressed me before, but this? Villains are so much more interesting (even relatable in some cases) when you understand what made them into the person they are now. And showing both Batman and Bane's different/same childhood experiences side by side in those striking panels was just a touch of genius.
Alright. And as good as the stuff with Bane was, The War of Jokes and Riddles was even better. The Riddler isn't as silly as he once was, and this version of Edward Nygma was downright psychotic & scary. Putting him toe-to-toe with the Joker and not letting me think he would immediately be the loser takes some doing. And King did it well.

Apparently, something happened to my library's copy, so after a few months of waiting...? Yeah, I just decided to go ahead and read this anyway.

But even without having read the previous storyline, I still thought this was pretty cool. The issues seem somewhat self-contained, even if they're interconnected as a whole. I'm sure I missed out on quite a bit doing it the way I did, but it really couldn't be helped.
I really do enjoy the backwoods country-voodoo vibe this has. Spooky redneck magic is just inherently scary to everyone. Or is that just the superstitious southern girl in me talking? Nah. Skinless Boy is fucking freaky - I don't care who you are.

Ok, a lot happens in one little issue. First, you find out that Sabrina is a bad-ass bitch and that she reallyreallyreally loves Harvey. Or so she thinks...
One of the cooler parts is when Sabrina passes her world's version of Jughead and she gets a glimpse of an aternate reality where he's a zombie and she's...something else. It was a nice little nod to Afterlife with Archie.
The rest is a bit of a spoiler. A gross, gross, seriously gross spoiler. (view spoiler)[ Those of you who have been reading this comic already know that Harvey was killed by the other witches on Sabrina's 16th birthday when he stumbled upon her dark baptism in the woods - thanks to Madam Satan.

And in a fit of grief, Sabrina 'brought him back' from the dead. Except, for the part that it was actually her father's spirit that came back in Harvey's body. Which, you know, wouldn't be SO bad...if he wasn't ok with making out with his own daughter! Can't say I'm too upset with her aunts for trying to put him back in the ground. [image]
Yeah, so Prime Reading (for those of us who have an Amazon Prime account, and not to be mistaken for Kindle Unlimited) usually has shit for all when it comes to free books. And rightly so! It's just a little perk thrown in by Amazon and not the reason you sign up. Anyway, Sabrina and Afterlife With Archie are both somehow miraculously listed as freebies, so I'm taking advantage of that and doing something that I normally never do - read the issues as singles before the collected volume comes out. But let's face it, it may be another 10 years before voume 2 of Sabrina finally gets here.
Alright. Spellman is basically a little evil Eddie Munster-looking mother fucker, with some powerful magic and some even more powerful ambitions. Please remember that this is not the cleaned-up version from the new Netflix show. These witches are bad. As in, they eat people and whatnot.

The gist is that Lavinia Gray's crackhead mom not only used her entire inheritance to buy drugs (ok, laudanum, not crack), but also stole a shitton of jewels and whatnot from Lavinia's friends (and maybe a close cousin, I'm not entirely sure) to support her habit.
Anyway. Lavinia (up till now) has been known for her stunning beauty and charming personality. When she had a sizable dowry, she was the pick of the litter. And even without it, she's so all-around awesome that guys are still falling over themselves to win her over.
So what's the problem? There's not one, actually. I mean, her friends aren't going to press charges and because of that, the likelihood of it getting out that her mom is a thief is fairly small. Also, the Wildes have had her mother put in an old-timey drug rehab center, so she's pretty much taken care of for the time being. Still, she's humiliated and wants to find a way to undo her mother's crimes. This is where Parth comes in. He's wealthy and powerful and all things delicious. <--except for the beard. I'm not convinced. Regardless, Lavinia proposes to him in a moment of desperation (he's her secret crush), but he turns her down (even though he's secretly got the hots for her, too), promising to help her find a rich dude to marry. Whoever she marries needs to be (supposedly) enough of a badass to squash anything about her mom from getting out in the open. Enter the somewhat superfluous John Wick gif: Because anytime you can use a John Wick gif to describe badassery, you should...
Another big part of the plot is that Lavinia turns her eye for fashion into quite a thriving business for herself. That, in turn, gains her a fraction of independence. Which means that Parth is going to have to put his foot in his mouth due to his manly-manness. Bonus? He didn't come off like too big of a douche.
Things like that happen, of course. You know that rom-comish is nonsense that would never happen in real life, but makes you smile anyway? The mistaken intentions, the misunderstandings, and finally...the overblown and overdramatic confessions of feelings?
Well, that was kind of how it all went down, and I thought it was pretty well done. Lavinia is quite likable and so is Parth. I think I'm going to have to go back and check out the other books in this series....more

I love Mera. And as excited as I was to see her get her very own title, I was honestly hoping to love this more than I did. <--that's NOT to say it wasn't good! It was. It's a solid first outing for this character. Not mindblowing, but solid.
The gist is that Mera (who has been named Queen in Exile) has to spend some time recovering on land, due to getting hit by some wonky magic that jacked up her ability to breathe & control water. Also, while it is temporary, it has made her a tad vulnerable.
Enter Orm in full-on Ocean Master garb, ready to defend Atlantis and take up the mantle as king again. Kinda? He's spent his exile falling in love with a single mom and her son. So, there's the potential that he might just want to help Mera and Arthur out and then go back to his life on the land.
Riiiight. So, Mera & Orm decide to go Xebel and see if those guys will help Arthur fight off Rath and his nasty magic - because once he's done with Atlantis, he's eventually going to come for Xebel. And this is where shit goes sideways...

I went into it knowing that it was some sort of Doyle/Lovecraft mash-up, but that was about it. I had no idea what Gaiman was trying to pull off as far as plot goes, and I'm glad I didn't. Because while this was exactly what it purported to be, it was also quite a bit different than I was expecting.
A detective with uncanny skills and his war hero roommate set out to solve a royal murder in London. Yeah, that sounds like a Sherlock Holmes story, right?
But these royals? They, um, bleed green. To say the least, this is a very interesting alternate history. And that's not even the twist.
I have a tumultuous relationship with Gaiman's writing. He's got all the talent in the world and I love his stories, but I wish they were a tad less rambling and drawn out. So, the forced compaction that naturally happens in graphic novelizations really worked for me here.

This one is told in the same flashback/present time sort of jumping all over the place sort of way, so if you don't like that kind of storytelling, you've been warned. I think (in this instance especially) it makes the plot a bit more fun to follow. Also, again at the end, there's an independent (yet connected) story about a witch in Eve's ancestry.
Dark Endeavors opens with Eve in jail, dealing with the fallout from the end of Forest of the Night. There are a few characters (new and old) that take the story in a different direction than I was expecting. The flashbacks this time around tell the story of how Eve caught the serial killer that ultimately ended her career as a police officer. It's not perfect, and you know who the serial killer is almost immediately, but it all ties together nicely at the end. <--I thought, anyway.

Ivar was popping in and out of Archer's vision as a wannabe Jesus, and Gilad was futzing around doing something with the Nazis.
Anyway, in this volume, we get a better look at Gil aka The Eternal Warrior. He's immortal like his brothers and has been (somehow) tasked to protect (basically) the human embodiment of the Earth. <--or something like that At any rate, whenever the Geomancer (that's what these guys and gals are called) gets killed, Gil goes into this berserker rage (akin to Thor's Warrior Madness) until he hunts down and kills the murderer. He's kind of a badass.

And due to his sketchy upbringing by cultists and an unfortunate wrong place wrong time scenario, Archer has made it to the top of Gil's hit list. So, it's up to Armstrong to protect his naive little buddy from his estranged little brother.

So in the last volume, he kinda sorta slept with the girl that Archer kinda sorta thought was the love of his life. And then Archer walked in on them. And then Archer walked out on them.
