"You can call me Death. And I will call you mine."
3.75 stars! This story was like if Beauty and the Beast was set in the Underworld. It's a reimagining of Finnish folklore, and I loved the wintery vibes and fresh takes on tried and true story ideas.
Death is a dirty talker and there is some nice steam. I will say, I think I would've liked a little bit more development of their relationship, even if it is just physical! It happened kind of quickly for me so it felt anticlimactic after the slow-build of the beginning. But after that ending I am definitely interested to see what will happen next for the two of them...
"You might like it in the end. Oh, you'll fight me on everything, you'll hate me with all your fury. But you might love to hate me, and that will make all the difference."
4.5 stars! Top-notch monster romance. Size kink. Shapeshifting monster (like Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde). Honestly the smut in this was great. Kathryn Ann 4.5 stars! Top-notch monster romance. Size kink. This was Beauty and the Beast, but with a lot of background sex magic since many of the demons who live in the Beast's castle are succubi/incubi. Not much to say. The tone just felt a bit off to me (it'd be dark and then have slapstick humor sprinkled in). Just wasn't for me!...more
4 stars! This is a great historical to read if you're in the mood for a story with lots of yearning and a hint of Beauty and the Beast vibes. Kitty is4 stars! This is a great historical to read if you're in the mood for a story with lots of yearning and a hint of Beauty and the Beast vibes. Kitty is the last hope her family has at securing a future for her younger sisters. After being shelved by the members of the ton for the last four years, she and a few other wallflowers concoct a scheme to be wicked in order to secure matches for themselves.
Kitty decides to claim she's betrothed to the reclusive Duke of Thornton, a man who's been gone from society for the last 8 years. Once Alexander hears of this plot, he surprises her in town, very intrigued...
Alexander is a great hero. He has a subtle humor to him and a great relationship with his sister and servants who are really more like his extended family. (Their meddling in Kitty and Alexander's relationship TOTALLY gave B&tB vibes, I loved it). He has had to battle chronic pain since saving his sister from a fire that took his parents years ago and burned half of his body. Along with this pain, he's been told by his doctors he will never sire children or will likely not have intimate relations with a woman again. I liked how this aspect of the book wasn't something that was magically healed; the obstacles he faced were dealt with well and it made sense why Alexander wanted to push Kitty away at times.
And Kitty was a very likeable and thoughtful heroine, just trying to do what she can to make sure her sisters are provided for. She's not shameless (when confronted with her lies by the Duke she was adequately apologetic), but her impudence is the very feature that makes her and Alexander such a great match. There wasn't a ton of angst, which is something I enjoy in my HR novels, but this is really a sweet read!
I look forward to reading the next books when they come out to see what the other Sinful Wallflowers have in store. ;)...more
