Plot: To say Eliza's had a hard life would be an understatement! She was crippled at 7, and the doctors tortured her tying to fix the problem. Because of this, she views life through very old eyes. Eliza is shocked when a princess offers her marriage to her nephew. Why would anyone want her? Desperate to escape her horrid mother, she agrees to marry the prince by proxy. She knows that once he sees her, he will want an annulment. Eliza will get a large settlement if the marriage is annulled, and then she can finally be free.
Eliza is shocked when she meets her husband in Italy. 1) Milo's is so handsome. 2) He can't decide if he wants the h or not. Eliza tries different methods to talk him out of the marriage, but the stubborn man won't budge. Miklos can relate to her loneliness and the walls she puts up to prevent more pain. He wants to show her how to live. Soon, they develop a friendship that eventually turns into love and a real marriage.
Unfortunately, the flames of war erupt and scandal and political upheaval threaten to tear the couple apart. Will their marriage survive? What was the real reason Miklos was exiled to Italy?
Dislike: 1. The h was hard to like sometimes. She had a quick mind but was scared to actually live. When she felt too vulnerable, Eliza had a habit of panicking and running off. Towards the middle of the book, I began to admire her loyalty and her dry sense of humor. I felt the same enjoyment as Miklos did when she was watching an opera for the first time. I rooted for this couple. That was until near the end of the book when she got involved with political rebels. This puts her husband and his entitled lands endanger. Miklos tells her that the revolution can't win because of Austria's alliance with Russia. What could he know? It's just HIS country.!
2. Eliza having her mother ship her guns for a revolution is idiotic. She wouldn't know how to secretly pull that off ...more

I would recommend this book if you're in the mood for a nice middle-ages story, which sometimes I am...more

I kept hoping to finish this book, but it was so boring to me. I wish the H had been stronger and less honorable. He is fighting for Henry IV against King Richard II. I wish the book focused more on that interesting concept but instead he takes his old home back then escorts the h to his home in Wales, marries her, then leaves her (that day) with his crazy sister-in-law and her ward. There's no romance, and the tone of the book changes to what these women are going to do to her....more

Nicholas returns to childhood home in England to plan his next move when he spots his bride's lookalike. Turns out Penny is Sophia's illegitimate cousin. He wants to use her to pose as his bride till he can find and rescue Sophia. The problem is that he has to convince her to help him and he will use every trick he has to get her to agree.
This would have been a great book if not for the h. God, she was so self-righteous and naive! Lecturing him on his responsibilities when she doesn't know him and ignoring that a few neighbors aren't as important as a whole (fictional) country. Penny only agrees to help after speaking to her mother and because she believes she can make him a better man ...more

While the later book was full of humour and witticm , A Civil Contract had none of these traits. This was a much more somber book.
The H has to give up the love of his life for a plain pudgy commoner. When Adam returns from the war, he finds that his late father was heavily in debt. He has no choice but to marry the daughter of a merchant. It doesn't help that she is plain and her father is overly involved in his life.
I feel sorry for Adam. He doesn't get to marry the woman he truly loves. Adam is a gentleman through and through. He is kind to Jenny and tolerates his FIL (bonus points for that). Yes, he is still in love with another woman, but he tries to give his wife his respect. I like that about him.
Jenny reminds me of Melanie from Gone With The Wind. She's kind and caring to everyone. She puts her husband's needs above her own, but she's shrewd enough to know he loves another. She knows that the two lovers didn't know each other well, and given enough time, their young love would fade. She handles any obstacles, thoughtful and smartly.
Conclusion: There was not much romance or humour. I found some parts boring. Luckily, the story did pick up after 200 pages.
The lesson of the story is that comfort and friendship make for a better marriage than young passion. I agree wholeheartedly, but still, that doesn't make for an exciting book.

The H kidnaps the h and imprisoned her as revenge against her father. Her father abducted his cousin/ward. The H does rape the h. Afterward, he regrets it and begins a wooing her. (Bodice-ripper trope)
This book has low angst and becomes an easygoing book. The h was the best part. She's not impulsive but actually uses common sense.
While this wasn't a great book, I still enjoyed it....more
