Well, this is the site that did me in, and turned a quick adventure and an escape from the creeping death of American exceptionalism into 15 years, a not-quite-yet-wife and two little boys. Galleria Vittorio Emmanuelle and the Duomo of Milano. It's still heart-stopping 15 years later, less crowded nowadays with tourists and pigeons, which isn't so bad. I do love it, but somedays I wish I had never laid eyes upon it A lovely sunny day in Newhaven, a former fishing village on the Firth of Forth, which is now a part of Leith in the City of Edinburgh. I live about 500m from where I took this. In the background, from left to right, you can see Granton, which has its own lovely harbour, then the three bridges over the Forth at Queensferry, the Ochil Hills up towards Stirling, and finally, in all its glory, the Kingdom of Fife on the other side of the firth. Built in the 12th-13th centuries the cathedral of Bourges, dedicated to St Stephen, is a surprisingly massive Gothic construction and one of the largest of its kind in France (and arguably elsewhere). The five-portaled façade is quite impressive but I prefer the Southern point of view where we can more easily perceive its mastodontic bulk and the absence of transepts, a rather unusual feature for a Gothic cathedral. This is where I live. In the far distance are Ishiguro's pale viewed hills. In the near distance is the bay where Dutch sailing ships in centuries past laid to, awaiting favourable tide and wind to enter Nagasaki harbour and unload their goods at Jacob De Zoet's Dejima Trading Post. Up the coast is Hirado where Shusaku Endo's Rodrigues and Garrpe roamed in Silence. Out of view to the left and down the hill a bit is our house and magnificent garden. Love the cathedral photos
