I confess I've had a love affaire with vampires for several years now, especially warrior vampires, the kind found in the books of Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lara Adrian and JR Ward. Though I've been published in Regency Romance under the pseudonym Valerie King--and yes one of my Regency Novellas features a vampire--one day I woke up knowing I had to create my own contemporary world of the warrior vampire.

For some mystical, magical reason, early in the process, my vampires appeared with enormous beautiful wings and it has been the most amazing experience to include flight in my novels, in both battle scenes and scenes involving spectacle. My special vampire world, published by St. Martin's Press, is introduced in the first book called, ASCENSION (12-28-2010). The second book, BURNING SKIES (May of 2011), opens up the world a little bit more. And even as I write this, I'm on the final draft of my third novel, WINGS OF FIRE (September of 2011). What a thrill it has been to live with my ascended vampires through the creation of this extraordinary, multi-dimensional world!

For more information about my unique take on the vampire mythos, check out my website at carisroane.com and my book release video on YouTube by putting in the search phrase, Caris Roane Ascension.

With every hope you'll enjoy reading my books set in the World of Ascension, All my best, Caris Roane

NOVELLA REVIEW

Well I had a fun time with this one. It was definitely fun revisiting this series and when I had realized that I hadn't read the novella, I decided that I needed to get on that. I am glad that I did, just to get more background on this pair that we have seen throughout the series. I definitely got plenty of laughs with some of the banter between the different warriors and the leader lady ....she is so badass. I always forget her name, I think its Endelle but every book I always get a kick out of her character. The second chance set up was very interesting, since that tends to be more rare in the PNR genre but definitely found it very interesting to see here. I also really enjoyed the aspects of the war between the rebels and the good warriors and the trust they our pair have with each other especially when things get dangerous and bad for them. They come out in the green and love seeing their relationship becoming so iron clad in the end. Definitely had a fun time and eager to get to more of this series.

This author writes passionate seriously sexy stories that leave lovers of paranormal romance simply breathless and this spin off series of books is no exception. Those readers who are familiar with her Ascension series will surely delight in these stories that are clearly a natural progression as the authors world building expands . It's a novel idea to have humanity progress to a second state of consciousness but Ms Roane explains her characters and the second earth they inhabit very well and it's simply fabulous to be swept away by both old and new characters.
Elise has always known exactly what the vampire Gideon really is . He may have been under the misappherension that he had wiped the memories of the mortal woman clean but Elise is a rare and powerful psychic and still retains all the knowledge . The intense relationship they shared has ended but a vision of Gideons belved sister being killed means Elise is faced with a dilemma. Ignore it or contact the one male who perhaps can help? Elise bites the bullet and makes that call but it's soon apparent that her journey has only just begun.
I love the books that this author keeps writing and get totally sucked into these stories. Most definitely not for those seeking a story that ends at the bedroom door though as these stories are smoking hot! Turn off the phone, lock the door and be prepared to be glued to the spot until you finish this book! Oh and one more thing maybe have a cold shower on standby!

After years of denying her fledgling powers, Elise Jordan is being called to Ascension and she’ll have to harness all her powers in order to protect herself and build a life with the one man who’s claimed her soul in this captivating paranormal romance.

With a fast paced and smooth flowing plot, this romance has the reader shivering in excitement with lots of suspense, action and romance. The characters are strong and captivating and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Elise begins her ascent into Gideon’s world and the sparks that fly between them. Elise hid her growing powers from Gideon while they dated but now her prophetic visions change everything. Elise and Gideon both have some emotional hang-ups that create some obstacles for their relationship even though their attraction burns hot and refuses to be denied.

The well written scenes and details capture the imagination and bring this world to life as the well orchestrated suspense and action draws readers into the story. Lots of excitement keeps readers on the edge of their seats as danger comes for Elise but not for the reasons they think as there are some surprising twists to keep the reader guessing. Elise’s introduction to Second Earth is intense and hair-raising and full of mind blowing passion.

I couldn’t put the story down once I started it as this fascinating and complex world just keeps getting better and better with every story I read - oh let’s not forget hotter and hotter with all the sexy winged vampires that spark some sizzling fantasies and I can’t wait to read the next one.

Roane's series revolves around vampires who start out as psychicly talented humans but then ascend from Mortal Earth to another dimension, Second Earth, and gain fangs and wings. There are two warring factions among the ascended and the 'pretty boy' bad vamps drink humans to death and also kill candidate ascenders who will not join their cause.

Brink of Eternity falls after Roane's first book Ascension, but works pretty well as a standalone short and as an introduction to Roane's world. I actually ended up inadvertantly reading this twice, I just wasn't in the right mood the first time round so I liked it better the second time - about 2.5 stars worth - but I still found it to be heavy on the sensual elements - there is probably as much 'action' in this short as there was in the whole first book but without the side threads to break things up a bit. (And I still had a really hard time with the 'potions' the vamps are able to inject with their fangs - they are another 'gift' to ascenders )

I read this as an online freebie for members on the HeroandHeartbreakers website (it was still free at the time of this posting), so for me the price was right. If you are curious about Roane's angel-like vamps, Brink of Eternity offers a decent peek at the series.

When Elise Jordan and her lover Gideon split up, it was mutual but both carried secrets. Elise new who Gideon was, however Gideon had no idea that there was more to Elise than he thought. When Elise has a vision that concerns Gideon's sister, she calls and it changes everything between Gideon and Elise.

Another fantastic read from Caris Roane. Gideon is intense and the desire for Elise is breathtaking and it builds as the story progresses. Love this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. I for one was happy to read this. It pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go till I finished reading it in one night. If you love vampires, clairvoyants, different world dimensions, aren’t afraid to read what people really want to say and say it, this is the book for you. Between vampires with wings and death vampires, you are in for the ride of your life. Ms. Roane not only entertained us with her writing, but left us with a need to want more and the pleasure to get to know the characters.
Elise has visions and has one about her ex’s sister Rachel. When she contacts Gideon about the vision, previous fireworks reignite with an undeniable passion between the two. Elise feels a pull to ascension and informs Gideon of her plans who is not too excited about her doing it. But in order to attempt to save his sister, Elise is going in full force. Gideon is going to be involved more than he plans.

I love this series. This is an amazing world of winged "kick-ass" vampires who are the guardians of humans and the second earth. So far," the ascenders" are the the mates to the guardians. They have special talents and powers that allow them to help in the war of good against evil. I am not a good writer, so I cannot write a review worth a hoot. I just know that this is a series you will love if you like vampires and other paranormals.

Neither of these main characters were in book 2 (maybe they were in book 1 and I don't remember) and I therefore felt no connection to their story. It seemed to come out of left field and have absolutely nothing to do with the Guardians series. Maybe it means more as the first in the Dawn of Ascension series.

Oh well onto Wings of Fire

Short story that actually seems to take place between books one and two, not two and three. Gideon and Elise really don't have much of a romance going on prior to the start of the story. They've been meeting at the Blood and Bite to have sex for the past two years. Neither has been honest with the other about who/what they really are. After much objecting, they apparently grow to love each other after Elise answers her call to ascension. Very steamy. Nice ending.

I got this free in a box set with Embrace the Dark. This story was a bit confusing to me, like I missed a previous book or something that had world building. There were characters mentioned, like I was supposed to know their back story that left me lost. After I read it I realized there is other books before this one. I might have liked this better had I read them first.

I've never read Caris Roane's books before but I must say the idea of winged vampire warriors was intriguing. Brink of Eternity is a Guardians of Eternity novella, however it isn't like any novella I've ever read. While most seem to speed through details and tend to leave this particular reader unsatisfied, this was completely different.

Though it does fall into the novella category, Brink of Eternity has enough details to give readers a taste of what a full-fledged novel by Caris Roane is like. Gideon is strikingly handsome (though for some reason I kept picturing him as a dark haired hero even though he is clearly a blond, go figure), as well as fierce, deadly, and stubborn. He tries not to form attachments to anyone because of his job as a warrior, though once he starts to love, he doesn't do it in half measures. Elise is one of those silently strong heroines, meaning her strength isn't as obvious as the hero's but when it's tested, she more than matches up. She's a reasonable but not malleable female and that's a definite plus.

Readers meet Gideon and Elise about a month after they've broken up and it's immediately clear that these two characters are not over each other. Caris Roane definitely doesn't hold back on the sexual tension or sex just because it is a novella; this is definitely a mature, adults-only book.

There's quite a bit of action packed into the story and it keeps Brink of Eternity from becoming stale and ordinary. I enjoyed the overall pace and plot of the story, and the characters definitely worked for me. While marked as a paranormal romance, it contains elements of science fiction and fantasy as well and the story works to make everything more believable and exciting.

There was only one point of contention for me throughout the story, and that was the immense amount of terminology used. Caris Roane definitely uses a lot of descriptive phrases and that's fine, but when it comes to a new reader picking this up, well, at times I was left a little befuddled and slightly disoriented. Words like breh-hedden and cadroen are a bit difficult to remember on top of all the other specialized terminology used. Another terminology problem for this particular reader is that words like "folding" don't mean what you might think; it's slang for dematerialization. So a good memory would be advisable unless you're a long time fan of the series then you've already got everything memorized.

Overall, Brink of Eternity was a very good read, with a strong story line, brisk pace, and steamy scenes. If author Caris Roane could just include a "For Newbies" type chart/dictionary at the end I'm sure that would help new readers a lot. As it stands, there is only a dictionary at the end which helps a lot, but I didn't know it was there until I finished the book. I would like to have had a bit of a primer on Mortal Earth, Second Earth and Third Earth for starters but I'm pretty sure that since I plan on picking up more of her books, I'll learn the differences in time.

As with all novellas this story was too short but Caris Roane managed to keep it believable, well as believable as a book about humans who ascend to Second Earth and become Vampires with additional powers can be. But it flows well if not into the direct storyline than at least as an interesting vignette of the earth and what is going on around the war.

Gideon is a Militia Warrior, close to becoming a Warrior of the Blood he has the strength and the power but not the desire. He wants to serve along side his brethren in battle, in the trenches not the Warrior elite. As a militia member, in theory he should not be able to form the breh-hedden, he should not have a long term relationship with a human either but of course what do rules matter when Destiny claims otherwise?

Elise, a mere human had been in a two year relationship with Gideon. He thought he wiped her memory after each meeting, she never bothered to tell him otherwise. Until one day she had a vision about Gideon's beloved sister being in danger. Contacting Gideon they had to work together to save his sister.

Along with his fellow militia they work together to save Gideon's sister and to escape the plans that Commander Greaves has for them. Their path to love is a bit easier because they had managed a semi relationship in the past but it too has it's bumps. Foremost was the problem that maybe they weren't supposed to have the breh-hedden, would they damage themselves if they went through with it? Would they best serve Second Earth if they didn't? Like I said this was a nice story and an excellent novella. Although, I seriously wish my favorite authors wouldn't write novellas they are never long enough and I always feel less than full.

Gideon has promised to uphold his decree to defend Second Earth from the vicious death vampires intent on claiming it. He's a Militia Warrior, and needs to remain focused on the task at hand. Unfortunately, his mind keeps traveling to his ex-girlfriend, Elise. Their breaking up is still quite recent, and he's nursing the hurt in more ways than one. If he's to succeed in fighting the war against the other faction, he'll need to set aside his pain, and the incessant yearning roiling within him.

An unexpected call from Elise soon turns his world topsy-turvy. Elise insists that danger is afoot, yet Gideon is reluctant to take her words at face value. After all, she left him not too long ago. When she reveals that she's been a clairvoyant for as long as she can remember, he soon realizes just how much she's held at bay from him. He can't help but to wonder as to what else she's kept from him.

Discovering her secrets, however, will have to wait. His sister has been targeted, and it's up to him to make things right. Elise is now the key in their discovering the treachery that's coming their way. Sadly, time is of the essence.

A chance decision soon changes life as they know it. The death vampires are on the march, and they're intent on destroying everything in their path. Gideon refuses to allow them the upper hand. The path to redemption is rocky, at best. Protecting Elise and his beloved family is of the utmost importance, and he'll make sure to succeed in that endeavor.

I admit I've started the series on the third book. (I think?) I'll need to catch up on the first two, but I've got to admit that from what I've read, thus far, this is a beautifully crafted series. The love, the tension, the intrigue - they're just enough to keep my attention on the story itself. Action flows non-stop, and the romantic elements succeed in giving a deeper meaning to the decisions Gideon and Elise undertake. I look forward to catching up on this lovely series.

As far as vampire romances go, this is a new favorite series for me! I've just recently started reading these books but I've become addicted in no time. Once I started that first book I just could not stop reading them! There's just something about a hunky vampire warrior with wings that captures my attention!!!

Caris' World of Ascension is a fascinating new take on vampires for me! It's hard these days to find something new and fresh and this series is both of those for me. This being a novella the story was pretty short and there was a lot that happened in such a short time that it might not be too believable to some but for me there was the perfect amount of information, action and romance to keep me happy and entertained! She explains things pretty well, what with the complicated different world and the Call to Ascension, that I don't think you really need to read the other books but I would recommend you read them anyways, just because they are really good. :)

I absolutely love the characters, especially Endelle! She is a hoot! She's always saying things that make me laugh out loud and making my husband think I'm crazy! LOL The mixture of seriousness and humor is a great thing, it really takes the heat off those intense moments and this book had a few of those! Gideon and Elise steamed up the pages pretty good too, so that break for some sexy love scenes was nice too! And can I just say, I wish I could fold my clothes on and off at will! That's a pretty cool power to have and darn convenient!!!

All in all I really enjoyed this read! It has the perfect mixture of action and romance, humor and seriousness and it's a very different and interesting take on vampires that all of you vampire lovers out there don't want to miss! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good paranormal romance!!!

The Blurb:
Discover a secret, sensual world of winged vampire warriors—and the women they crave. Meet the Guardians of Ascension....

Elise Jordan ended an intense relationship with her lover Gideon when she could no longer handle their being worlds apart…literally. Elise, a human living on Mortal Earth, just wasn't cut out for a vampire boyfriend from another dimension. Unfortunately, she never quite got over him—or the explosive passion they shared. But now, after denying her own fledgling powers for years, her increasing supernatural abilities and prophetic visions have become too much for her to deny. She's being called to ascension—where she'll become a winged vampire like Gideon, and face an army of lethal death vampires who thirst for her blood. Now she must harness all her powers in order to protect herself from her darkest enemies…and build a life with the one man who's claimed her soul.

"Brink of Eternity" is an original Guardians of Ascension short story from Caris Roane.

It is also book 1 in Dawn of Ascension. I loved Gideon and Elise. A month after their two year relationship ended, she has a vision about his sister and contacts him. They meet at the place they always met during their relationship and she relays the vision to him and the truth from the two years of their relationship that he was unaware of. She reveals all she’d held back to him.

Their connection is deep, smoking hot, and emotional. I loved seeing them grow together, finding their way; and fully seeing and knowing each other as Elise embraces her new reality and they find their fit together in this world.

I managed to confuse myself a bit with this book because I have recently read Awakening (Rapture's Edge #1) and managed to completely miss the following Reader's Advisory - "Awakening is a paranormal romance novel, a vampire romance with a fantasy edge, of the Rapture’s Edge Series. The series is preceded by two related books: BRINK OF ETERNITY and THE DARKENING. RAPTURE’S EDGE is part of the Guardians of Ascension Saga!"

So starting this book, I immediately travelled back in time to before Rachel and Duncan got together, as Elise and Gideon try to figure out just what it is that's going on with them, dealing with death vampires and going through Elise's ascension.

This book is full of intensity and action, both between the sheets and out of it. Elise is a feisty character who knows what she wants and how to get it. The only difficulty she has is figuring out if someone can be by her side or if she will continue to walk alone. Elise and Gideon have already had a relationship which ended by mutual consent, but they both still feel the attraction. Secrets and personal fears though have a way of getting involved and in the way as they try to figure out what is going on between them.

The characters in this book are all wonderfully written and it was actually really good to read about them in a different context, even if it was from an earlier time than what I had already read. Definitely recommended.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book; the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Contemporary, Paranormal, Romance

Phoenix, Arizona & Second Earth

Elise Jordan had ended her intense relationship with Gideon when she could no longer handle their literally being worlds apart. Elise is a human living on Mortal Earth. Having a vampire boyfriend and lover that was from another dimension just wasn’t for her. The problem is that she never got over him nor the passion that exploded between them. For years she has denied her own fledgling powers but that is hard to do with her supernatural abilities and prophetic visions increase to the point that she can no longer deny them. She knows she is being called to ascension. She will now become a winged vampire just like Gideon, which means she will be facing death vampires that will be wanting her blood. Now she has to harness her powers so that she can protect herself from the darkest of enemies. It will also let her build a life with the one man that has claimed her soul.

This is a wonderful story that holds up well on its own. For readers that have not read the books in the series they will not be lost in the slightest as they read this novella. It will have readers wanting to read more from this world and will want to immerse themselves in this new and unique world of vampires. The action is fast and furious and the passion is hot and steamy and will have readers reaching for the nearest glass of ice water. The characters are complex and enjoyable to read about and makes for a story that is hard to forget even after the reader finishes it.

I am completely intrigued by the twist on a much used genre. Roane’s premise left me breathless. Her vivid descriptions had me walking (or flying) through this world right alongside her characters. I could see and feel everything that they encountered. This story was a very intimate tale between the two main characters that the reader is drawn into. You cannot help but feel the emotions that Roane writes so eloquently about.

This story was so off centre from the bulk of the vampire genre that I found myself saying ‘that is sooo cool’ many times throughout the novella. I wanted to join this world and ascend alongside them. It`s also very intriguing to see what the history Rome has inspired. The seamless melding of history and this unique view of the paranormal creates a very unique world for this story to take place in.

The characters in this novel are completely off the hook. The main characters were fully developed and easy to get to know. They were human in all aspects, except, of course, for their supernatural additions. Even their dialogue remained natural throughout. It was never forced and always sounded human.

Overall, this story (and the series as a whole) is definitely one of a kind amongst a sea of vampire romance stories. It’s definitely a must read for anyone looking for a quick, racy supernatural read that you won’t be able to put down. I cannot wait to delve into more from this very talented author.

In the world of vampires and paranormal romance finding a world that is unique is hard to do, Caris Roane has managed to do that with Brink of Eternity and the The World of Ascension series. This is an in between novella #2.5 in this series.

Gideon is a warrior first and foremost, he plans to devoting his life (eternal as it may be) to helping win the war within the vampire world. He has recently ended a two year affair he had been carrying on with a human, Elise.

Elise had always had to hide her gift, she was taught at an early age that it was not something to be discussed and as an effort to keep control of her life and ignore her visions she is very ordered and very scheduled. When she receives a vision of Gideon's beloved sister being in danger she has to go against everything she thought she wanted in order to help save Rachel.

The unique world that has been created in this series is well done and the mythology that has even been created as part of this world is good. I enjoyed the chemistry between Elise and Gideon, with this being an in between novella a lot of the back story of the two warring factions and even of the warriors themselves is missing. I would say on its own it is a good read and I liked it, I think if read as part of the series it would be even better.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

Having not read any of the Guardians of Ascension, this book was a really unique introduction to author's world for me. While there was a little bit of a learning curve, I couldn't put the book down until the very end. I can't wait to read more of this storyline.

Elise and Gideon broke up for good reason. Now that Elise is forced to meet up with him after time apart, both of them are having a little trouble remembering why they stopped seeing one another. Their explosive "dates" are almost palpable when they meet up for the first time since. Unfortunately, the reason for the meeting isn't exactly happy. Elise has been hiding things from Gideon and now has to reveal herself to him (in an entirely different way) to save his sister.

Elise is finally going to follow her call to ascension whether Gideon likes it or not and he is forced to make a choice more than once in this story. These two are such an unexpected match that I couldn't help rooting for them in the end. Oh, and who doesn't love a good vampire romance (with a good amount of sexy scenes)? This world has totally got me hooked and I can't wait to read some more!

Brink of Eternity was a good read, but for me it wasn't great. There is a lot going on and I felt kind of lost. This should definitely be read in order. I have a feeling since I missed the first book that there was some information that would have helped in understanding things in this book. It's about Elise and Gideon but does talk a little about characters from other books. In the back of the book there was a glossary of terms which did help clear up a bit of the terminology. I felt like there was just too much going on in the story line and it jumped around a bit it was really hard to focus on the story. I did enjoy the story, just a bit hard to follow at times. Elise and Gideon struggle straight from the beginning not really sure of where their relationship is and if it's going to go anywhere and if it is in fact over. While each thinks they know what they want they begin to question what they really want and amidst all of this is what's called the ascension process which can become very dangerous and does very fast. Lots of twists and turns and just when you think the story may be over it just keeps going. I did enhoy the story and definitely will be reading more of this series.

Sexy...Intriguing...With Great In-Depth Characters...

I have read the whole Ascension series and this was a great extensive peek into the world of the sometimes mysterious miltia-warriors. But what really surprised me was the emotional depth to it, generally I feel its harder to bring a lot of emotion to a story thats on the shorter side. I loved getting to know Gideon and Elise...they had great in-depth character descriptions, not just concerning their appearance but their personalties as well. Lack of extensive character descriptions has become a real pet peeve of mine, so Im extra happy when I get an abundance of it. This author always does a great job of that...

The chemistry between Gideon and Elise was felt immediately and was off the chart sexy...which made for some great racy scenes. The great amazing leader Endelle showed up to steal some scenes. Endelle is a huge character with so many layers...I absolutely adore her and love every scene I can get with her.

Don't miss you on this great page-turning story! If you have read the Ascension series you will love the story of Gideon and Elise.

In this multi-dimensional world some humans possess preternatural powers and when those powers reach a certain level, they can choose to ascend to the next dimension. Ascending comes with a lot of physical and geographic changes. When human, Elise Jordan, confesses to ex-boyfriend, Militia Warrior on Second Earth, Gideon, that all those memory wipes he performed on her never worked and she has some very strong preternatural powers, he was extremely upset for all the lies. He thought she was a normal human woman. Normal she's not! She's also ready for ascension.

A vampire story with a twist! Gorgeous sexy vampire warrior, Gideon, is no different from guys here on earth. He doesn't want commitment. He a warrior and doesn't want the responsibility of caring for one more person. If Elise ascends, he'll feel responsible for her but when it's fate, no matter how hard you fight it, it's inevitable! The breh-hedden is magnificent to watch! The bigger they are, the harder they fall. I can't wait to read more of this fantastic series!!!

The cover had done by Tricia "Pickyme" Schmitt.. She's so talented :)

While I'm not fans of Novella, because sometimes I feel the story too short, not with this one. Sure, Brink of Eternity just have 10 chapters, but it's like Caris Roane can wrap up Gideon and Elise story and left reader satisfied and beg for more. And, this novella is steamy too, no rush, not just a so-so love scene, but an actual love scene that make you want to change your panties (hah! :)) ) My favorite part is when Elise sucked Gideon's wing locked. I swear this is the most erotic scene in this series, to see the man under mercy of his woman :))...

I hope Gideon and Elise will take a part of the next story :)

Note : I don't know why this one considered as book #2.5, since the story timeline is, I believe after book #1
