Roane's series revolves around vampires who start out as psychicly talented humans but then ascend from Mortal Earth to another dimension, Second Earth, and gain fangs and wings. There are two warring factions among the ascended and the 'pretty boy' bad vamps drink humans to death and also kill candidate ascenders who will not join their cause.

Brink of Eternity falls after Roane's first book Ascension, but works pretty well as a standalone short and as an introduction to Roane's world. I actually ended up inadvertantly reading this twice, I just wasn't in the right mood the first time round so I liked it better the second time - about 2.5 stars worth - but I still found it to be heavy on the sensual elements - there is probably as much 'action' in this short as there was in the whole first book but without the side threads to break things up a bit. (And I still had a really hard time with the 'potions' the vamps are able to inject with their fangs - they are another 'gift' to ascenders )

I read this as an online freebie for members on the HeroandHeartbreakers website (it was still free at the time of this posting), so for me the price was right. If you are curious about Roane's angel-like vamps, Brink of Eternity offers a decent peek at the series.
