Dark-Hunter #8

Unleash the Night

Rate this book
It's a predator-eat-predator world for the Were-Hunters. Danger haunts any given day. There is no one to trust. No one to love. Not if they want to live...

An orphan with no clan that will claim him, Wren Tigarian grew to adulthood under the close scrutiny and mistrust of those around him. A forbidden blend of two animals - snow leopard and white tiger - Wren has never listened to anyone when there was something he wanted. Now he wants Marguerite.

Marguerite D'Aubert Goudeau is the daughter of a prominent U.S. senator who hates the socialite life she's forced to live. Like her mother before her, she has strong Cajun roots that her father doesn't understand. Still, she has no choice but to try and conform to a world where she feels like an outsider. But the world of rich and powerful humans is never to meet the world of the Were-Hunters who exist side by side with them, unseen, unknown, undetected. To break this law is to call down a wrath of the highest order.

In order to have Marguerite, Wren must fight not just the humans who will never accept his animal nature, but the Were-Hunters who want him dead for endangering their world. It's a race against time and magic without boundary that could cost Marguerite and Wren not just their lives, but their very souls...

Wren Tigarian (Katagaria - half snow leopard and half white tiger) & Marguerite "Maggie" D’Aubert Goudeau (Human)

Mom and Dad don't like me
They say I'm mean and crude
They tried to make me a good little boy
By sticking downers in my food

My neighbours try to run me down
Because I'm such a mess
Maybe it's cause of the way I look
Or maybe the way I dress

Girls don't really like me
That's why I hate myself
Maybe it's cause of the way I look
Or maybe it's something else.

DEAD MILKMEN lyrics from the song “V.F.W.: Veterans of a f@cked up world”

This is Wren’s favorite song and it is the one that actually summarizes his existence. Wren is such a baby boy in Katagaria years. Less than 50 years old, he was unfortunate in terms of his parents who both apparently hated him. When they were both killed about 20 years ago, little Wren found refuge at Peltier House that sheltered creatures who were thrown out of their clans and all the misfits in need for help.

Wren rarely talks; he has a monkey as his only friend and long hair to cover his eyes and his job is to clean tables.
But for some reason almost everyone is scared of him.
Maybe because he is deep down an animal.
Maybe because he is half snow leopard and half white tiger and completely unstable.
Maybe because he is more lethal than he looks.

But when he takes a look at Maggie, his quiet world is shattered. Maggie is the daughter of a senator and she has strong Cajun roots from her mother side. Although rich, she is a simple, nice girl really. Her world will change as well when she meets her first Were-Hunter.

As their story proceeds, many truths will be revealed. Wren is not really that poor and his father is not really that bad and Wren is not really that dangerous unless you harm the woman that he loves.

That was an awesome story! I loved the chemistry between the two main characters.
I loved Wren! He is such a tortured hero. He is basically a male who just waits for the right girl in order to show his true self and shine.

Unleash the Night is a really great Were-Hunter story. I enjoyed the plot very much, as well as the high quality writing. It was simply unputdownable. You have the reader’s privilege to know everything, and it is great - I like to be informed. Cleverly measured tension, great suspense and distressing conflicts, heartbreaking past, amazing secondary characters, and emotional, intimate, but also steamy erotic scenes.

The main characters, their emotions, backgrounds, and motivations are fully elaborated but never boring.

Wren is half snow leopard, half white tiger, who needs to be tamed. He is practically pulled through the walls he had built around himself only by the presence of Maggie the very first time they meet. His attraction for her is instant and unexpected, and he is scared of the tenderness he feels for Maggie. He thinks he is unworthy of her, so it is so uplifting to see as he becomes more and more confident, and starts to believe that maybe there is hope for him, for them together.

"Her touch scalded him and it touched the tiny part of him that was human.
More than that, it touched his animal heart and tamed it. He never thought he'd feel anything like this. He was at peace."

Maggie’s development is also very apparent. First she can’t really confront anyone: she is in a company out of habit, and her fear of her father’s opinion and reaction over her deeds is always on the edge of her thoughts. Then somewhere in the middle of the book determination takes root in her that one day she will stand up for herself against her father. “Sooner or later, she was going to force him to see her for herself.” And finally she did it, but with respect and love. She is just an amazing character.

Both Wren and Maggie have insecurities, but slowly gain confidence from each other. Unleash the Night is a stunning story of the Dark-Hunter series.
"All he'd ever wanted in his life was to belong, and with her he found that special place. It was why she meant so much to him. Why he never wanted to lose her. She was everything to him.

My favorite quotes.

Seize The Night the 2nd book in the Were-Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon continues with this story of Wren Tigarian,

a hybrid mix of a Snow Leopard and a White Tiger

Outcast by his clan he has led a life of solitude and fighting to survive from the enemies who want to destroy him.

Marguerite D'Aubert Goudeau - Maggie - is the daughter of a prominent U.S. Senator and has been forced to lead the life of a socialite, which she despises. Beautiful and smart, she has always felt like an outsider….

I loved Maggie and Wren together…their story is sweet and so heart-warming. Finally, after such a long time, Wren meets someone who touches him….
He dropped his gaze down to her hand on his chest. She was human. Fragile. And yet she had a strength inside her that stunned him. He’d been alone all his life…Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone by his side, just this once?
And he brings into her life what she has been looking for such a long time…..Loved their banter….
“This has been one seriously fucked-up day, huh? (Wren)
You might say that. This morning it was 2005 in New Orleans, I was staring at you wondering what it would be like to have the ability to change into a tiger. Now it’s the day before I enter the world in 1981 and I can turn into a tiger. Yeah, just your average day...if you’re in a Ted Raimi production. (Maggie)”
Past characters are interwoven in the story, which is always an added and pleasurable bonus.

Great dialogue…as always….we know we will get some great writing….as we expect!!!!

My favorite quote:
Her touch scalded him and it touched the tiny part of him that was human.
More than that, it touched his animal heart and tamed it. He never thought he’d feel anything like this. He was at peace. Calm. Soothed.
There was no pain. No past. No taunts echoing in his head.

Loved it!!!

I LOVED THIS BOOk! It is absolutely awesome! I loved both Wren and Maggie, a cute couple. Everything I've known about Were-Hunters is so intriguing. Near the end when Maggie got some power, I felt a bit surprised but I liked it because that made them get their sweet HEA eventually.

This is a great series! I'm flying to the next book!

I have a love / hate relationship with this series. But this one was a gem! I loved Wren and Maggie. Wren, as usual, had a heartbreaking history, but not nearly as bad as others. Maggie also had some sadness and shadows in her past, but together they were able to overcome.

Was it perfect - well no, but I am not sure anything is anymore.

Overall, I loved Wren and all of his issues and I loved watching Maggie help him through them. Even when he pushed her away, he could not let go and she did not let him, but also did not roll over and take shit from him. She had backbone but also a heart. Wren was so sweet to her. Fixing his hair...teaching her about McDonalds...really nice moments.

The bears did not make me happy. Mother Peltier - total bitch.

There was some repetition from other books when event overlapped, but it was not bad because Maggie and Wren were not with others a lot.

I absolutely loved this story!

I can't believe I was lucky enough to read two great books in a row!

Ok, I must admit, I forgot how much I liked this series. And surprisingly, the 8th book is still really good! Most of the times, after the first couple of books, a series becomes "meh". Not this one!

The characters were lovely! Normally, it annoys me when the plot focuses more on their love story (here, the plot was the love story!). But this one was great! It wasn't that annoying, gushy thing I usually don't appreciate in UFs. Nope, it was a cute, sweet, full of action and killing kind of plot. There were even some things that I didn't expect, and I love surprises.

This book is worth trying, specially if you liked (any of) the dark-hunter books.

I forgot how much I loved this book and the main reason why it’s one of my favourites - Wren – sigh there’s just something about him.

Orphaned with no clan that will claim him, Wren Tigarian grew to adulthood feeling like he belonged nowhere. A blend of two animals - snow leopard and white tiger - Wren is misunderstood and mistrusted by many, even those who house him in Sanctuary.

Wren keeps to himself, until the day Marguerite D'Aubert Goudeau (Maggie), a human enters his world/life. In Maggie he finds a place where he can be at peace. Maggie and Wren worked well together, and as a couple are sweet. But before they can get their HEA Wren has to have deal with the money hungry fools that want his blood, and are willing to hurt Maggie to get to him.

Some secondary character I really liked, others not so much, take for example, Wren's mother, ick, she was more than certifiable – a horrid creature.

No matter how many times I read this I always enjoy the fact that Wren sees the leader of Sanctuary Maman Peltier, in a way many others don’t – she really irked me in this book, but I do like the fact she realised she had more than underestimated Wren, as many others have.

A re-read I completely enjoyed.

This was a pretty standard Dark-Hunter book. That is not a bad thing. The books are usually light-hearted reads filled with plenty of romance, humor, and with just enough drama to keep things interesting.

I liked the romance in this one. I was unsure about Wren to begin with, the guy is a bit weird, but enjoyed the way his feelings for Marguerite developed and how they helped bring him out of his shell. I was equally happy with the way Marguerite's feelings for Wren helped to give her the courage to stand up to her father and finally live the life she wanted. The pair made a good couple.

The plot was fast paced and fun. Wren is set up by his uncle to take the blame for his parents death and a meeting of the Omegrion is called to vote on his fate. The vote goes badly for Wren and he is forced to try and clear his name.

We met a few familiar faces from the previous Dark-Hunter books as they popped up to lend a hand to Wren. That is always fun. Amy and Fang featured as secondary characters and both had good showings. I'm looking forward to reading their book. The other stand out secondary character was the mediator of the Omegrion Savatar. I'm eager to learn more about him in future books!

This might not have been one of the very best Dark-Hunter books but it was still a worthwhile and fun read.

Rating: 3.5 stars.

Audio Note: The Dark-Hunter series has a few audio narrators, but Fred Berman is probably my favorite of the bunch.

Very sweet book. Younger feeling, as the two main characters are college aged vs all those eons old DH's. In contrast to the DH books, the Were-Hunters books are about living life amongst humans, surviving enemies, & finding your fated mate. The DH's are all about duty, the job, being bound for all time to Artemis.

Wren: super antisocial busboy at the Sanctuary bar. Snow leopard-tiger hybrid. Extremely fierce & dangerous. Rarely speaks or makes eye contact. Appearance - hobo style.

Maggie: law student, senator's daughter, super preppy proper type. Hates her socialite world & mean people. Kind.

What I liked about this story: how kind & caring Maggie is to Wren & his responses to her kindness. Seeing Wren's progression as he continues to interact with Maggie. The haircut, swoony devotion. They're lovely together. And the plot/villain is more of a side note, it does bring in new characters & Savitar - who's the older beach bum surfer dude version of Acheron.

THE CRINGIEST BOOK OF THEM ALL.

ugh.

I honestly dont know why I didnt enjoy it as much as the previous 7 books.... But the characters felt super boring and plain and meh. this whole book felt "meh" to me. The relationship between Wren and Marguerite lacked of passion, and there were moments super unrealistic, even in this world. UUGHH.(the very ending was amazing because we get to see Nick and I am refering to the very last page, the only interesting moment to me, tbh)

Also...this "Savitar" character.... is it supposed to be the new Acheron? I want to know more about him.

Apart from that... it is a big NOPE for me. Sorry, my dear dark hunter world, but I should have skipped this.

Okay, why are these were-animal men so damn sweet and swoon-worthy? Maybe it's the fact that animals are pretty honest in their emotions. I don't worry about my dog being an arrogant jerk or cheating on me with another family. Animals are pretty straight forward. Except cats. They are the embodiment of all evil.

So, we have a guy named Wren (really?), and a girl named Maggie. He's some sort of hybrid shape shifter that turns into a cross between a white tiger and a panther. Does anyone else have the Napoleon Dynamite thing in their head about Ligers? That's all I could think of!

Wren is a busboy at the Sanctuary and Maggie shows up their one night with her study group because they wanted to honor Nick, who they think is dead. Maggie's study group consists of a bunch of snobby bratty trust fund kids who think they call the shots wherever they go. So, when one of the male douchebags notices that Wren is looking at Maggie, he decides to be a tough guy and throw his drink at the lowly busboy. Wow, throwing your drink at another guy? What are you, a Real Housewife of Beverly Hills? That's showing everyone what a Big Man you are!

then, throw your glass! You have to throw something!

Maggie feels bad about having jerk-ass friends and thus the great law student/busboy romance begins.

This book was really cute and sweet. Wren is completely adorable and charming, and Maggie is understanding and compassionate along with being smart. The only thing missing is that we don't see much of our New Orleans gang in this one. I love catching up with them in every book. But, we catch a small glimpse of Nick. I've been hoping for that!

Well, unintentionally tagging on to Joe Valdez's theme, I guess this is my time-travel book for the month.
...

4 ROMANCE STARS
...

Most people think Wren Tigarian is mute. A busboy with long dreadlocks who never makes eye contact, rarely speaks, and avoids all human contact, Wren exudes a sinister, predatory aura that dares anyone to try and get close to him.

Marguerite D'Aubert Goudeau is a rich college student, daughter of a senator, attending law school - and she is miserable. Her father is a politician who is obsessed with appearances and money, and he rules his daughter's life with an iron fist. Who her friends are, who she can date, which school she can attend, what she can wear... Her mother committed suicide 13 years ago when she just couldn't take living with him anymore. Maggie is sick of being forced to see people as either "our kind of people" or "below us" and instead sees people as kind or unkind.

When Wren and Maggie meet at Sanctuary one night, both of their lives will be changed forever...

....

Well, Kenyon's back on her feet in this novel! An actual love story with actual characters again, instead of just world-building with a side of romance. Perhaps because of this, the sex and kissing is much better in this novel than in the previous two.

Wren is an angry young were-tigard who lashes out viciously at almost everyone. Honestly, if I were Maggie I wouldn't never have gotten involved with this man - too scary for me. However, since you get his point of view in this story along with hers, you can see why Wren is the way he is and you can see how and why he's messed-up. He ends up being a wonderful character and a wonderful man, but I would have never stuck with him the way Maggie did. Not sure if that makes her a better person than me, or just someone who has less of a self-preservation instinct than I do - but Wren is trouble. I mean, he nearly kills one of the male friends she's out with on the first night (not because of jealously, thank God, but because the man throws a drink in Wren's face.) In a scene almost immediately afterward, she watches him fight off 6 armed muggers single-handedly. In their early relationship he's alternately kissing her fiercely or pushing her away. Sometimes he says really curt stuff to her that SHE seems able to brush off, but would hurt me deeply. He lands in jail more than once.

So he's not a guy I'd pursue in real life, is what I'm saying.

We see his point of view alternating with hers and clearly understand why he does all of this stuff - Kenyon does succeed in making him a likable and sympathetic character.

Maggie also is someone who seemed like a character to me and not a piece of cardboard. I found her relationship with her father to be the most fascinating. While both Wren and Maggie have troublesome parents, I couldn't relate to Wren's problems. His parents kept him locked in a cage throughout childhood, referred to him as "it," and neglected him badly. Maggie, on the other hand, is dealing with an emotionally manipulative and abusive father.

Maggie was amazingly chill and easygoing about stuff. She barely freaked when she found out the man she'd been having sex with was a were-tigard, and after She seems to adjust to this very dramatic development in mere hours, something that was stretching my credulity to its limits.
...

I really like that Maggie is human and therefore there is one person in this book I can relate to. I hate when Kenyon makes both her characters super-powerful immortal beings.
...

...

So, where does the time-travelling come in? Well, all werepeople are capable of time travelling. In this book, Wren and Maggie travel from their time (2005) back to 1981. For reasons. It's interesting seeing time travel in a romance book, Kenyon definitely has fun with it - especially 1981 fashion and music - and it definitely plays a huge role in the plot in more ways than one.

Werepeople are highly discouraged from travelling through time because of the problems it can cause, but in this case it works out perfectly (of course).
...

I think this is the first time in my life when I've read a romance novel where the woman has had more than one lover and the man is the virgin. Kudos to Kenyon for switching things up a little bit.

...

This book (14th) had me completely changing my opinion and point of view about one character who I had liked up to this point, but whose true colors are revealed in this installment.

...

This is a very rare example of a romance novel where the main couple actually discusses STDs, condom use, and pregnancy. Which is good. Only they don't discuss it until AFTER they've had unprotected sex twice - which really defeats the purpose of the whole talk, in my opinion. o.O
...

MOST ROMANTIC QUOTE:
Wren: "I wish I could have stayed awake long enough to see your face when I changed over."
Maggie: "No, you don't. I assure you, it wasn't pretty."
Wren: "There's never anything about you that isn't pretty, Maggie. You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."

*swoon* So sweet! :)
...

Overall, one of the stronger entries in this series, but not 5-star-worthy in my opinion. That is reserved (as of now) for Dance with the Devil and Night Play only. So far.

Wren. Oh Wren. The abandoned, misunderstood, but oh-so-hot Tigard (that would be a cross between a Tiger and a Leopard). Actually he’s a were-Tigard which makes him part human as well. Whatever… he’s achingly gorgeous, and a bit of a loose cannon but at the same time is absolutely swoony with a very gentle soul. Keeping to himself since the death of his parents, he has essentially removed himself from the world, and has an innocence about him that is just irresistible!

Maggie was a great match for him. Living a life that she hates, she is drawn to the charismatic Wren the moment she first sees him bussing tables at Sanctuary. He is so different to everything she has ever known yet sparks fly between the two and she eagerly accepts him into her life. By the time she finds out what he really is, she’s too far gone to really care!

They both fall hard and fast, and the best part about their story was that there was no game playing. They liked each other, wanted each other, and despite a brief ‘you’re safer if you stay away from me’ moment, they got together and stayed that way. The romance between these two is just beautiful with lots of steam.

We get to revisit with some of the characters we met in previous books (including Julian, Vane and Fang), which I loved, but best side character award (in the absence of my beloved Acheron) has to go to Savitar, he’s hilarious!

The end is really intense, with lots happening and twists and turns all over the place! And as always there is a very satisfying HEA. And on a side note – I loved the Epilogue, and was very pleasantly surprised by the content. Must have more!!!!

Meet Wren Tigarian, the sexiest tigard alive ! [image error]

[image error]

[image error] hm ,pokok nya after Wren bilang, I have to make love to you Maggie, and taste you,and take you right now...Maggie langsung osteoporosis, menyerah kalah oleh pesona Wren [image error] ..pppsst...aku juga terpesona.
[image error]

[image error] [image error]

Nah dalam pencarian kebenaran yg sesungguh nya, mereka berdua leap through time, kembali ke masa lalu saat 3 hari sebelum papanya Wren di bunuh mama nya yg bitchy itu.
Dan ketauan lah siapa penjahat sesungguh nya, hingga Wren bisa memulihkan nama baik nya kembali... [image error]
Maggie malah sempet ngobrol lho sama papa nya Wren...

Sayang Nick gak berani muncul, cuma nitip kado aja...hehhe....
Cerita nya sweet banget, dengan masa lalu Wren yg menyedihkan, walau ga sepedih Kyrian maupun Valerius sih....lagian, Wren ternyata tajir berat....so, ini salah satu buku DH kesukaan ku *tak lain tak bukan karena uhuk2 mereka yg seru tapi seksi*... juga baca nya lumayan bikin meriang2...atau..mungkin karena terlalu di hayati...ehm...its all up to you deh...

I loved this, Its nice how the author switches things up a bit and gives us a taste of the Katogari and Arcadian problems in a world of dark hunters, it freshens things up a bit... I was disappointed in the bears, and their actions in this story.

Wren and Maggie are such an amazing couple as they find love rather than let it find them, and chase what they want, I loved the whole time travel bit even if the outcome did confuse me.

But all in all was great.... Loved the characters in this.

Every time I pick up a Sherrilyn Kenyon book, I know I'll be doing nothing that day as I get lost in her amazing world of sexy, swoonworthy heroes and sassy, quick-witted, fierce heroines. I'm usually a little like this...

description

And I'M NEVER DISAPPOINTED!

I devoured Wren and Maggie's book and now that I'm done, I'm so sad it's over. I don't know what it is about the Dark Hunter Universe, but I was hooked from the very beginning and each book get better even when it seems impossible.

description

There's not a single thing about Wren and Maggie that I didn't love. They're easily one of my favorite DH couples, but then again, I say that after every single books. I could write about how magical their love is, how steamy their lovemaking is, ect, ect, BUT I could never find the right words to do this book justice. All I can say is if you haven't read this series, what are you waiting for!?!??!?!?!

Okay this book was awesome! Each book makes me want to read about a specific character for the next one. When I saw Wren in either Night Play or one of the others I can't even remember now I have binged so much of these I really wanted to read his book!

Wren's mother was certifiable. Literally. I can't imagine a much worse human being. Or in this case animal. She is on par with Umbridge from Harry Potter and that's saying a LOT.

I am so happy that they are now mates! Thanks Nick! Or I guess Savitar but Nick was the one who asked.

I am also really happy that Wren's dad is alive! Woohoo!

I'm still mad at Maggie's dad. I somewhat wonder if he really cared for her or the fact that Wren is rich. I have a lot of questions about his motivation.

I loved Wren and Maggie! Wren had my heart from the beginning, poor, misunderstood, sweetheart that he is and Maggie who never judged him when so many others did. The storyline was exciting and full of action with convoluted time travel elements that prevented me from putting it down! The ending was fantastic and I liked how their mating played out, Fates be damned!!

This book and Night Pleasure are my favorite from Sherrilyn Kenyon so far. There are also the first two I've read by her.

One of my top and favourite Dark-Hunter books. I just love how it started, my favourite line from the first page:

“Life is a soul-sucking test that you either survive or fail. Personally I think failure blows, so I intend to survive and laugh my ass off at all the losers”.

Marguerite didn’t match her snooty lifestyle that she lived; she’s down to earth and makes her own mind-up based on her moral compass, she’s strong. Wren and Marguerite had an instant connection and when walking home from the bar, where Wren works, alone after her study group causing trouble some muggers try to get the best of her, Wren jumps in and saves her taking a bullet to the shoulder for her. Wren has had a tough life, his parents not wanting him and being an outsider, he also happens to have magic. With other were’s out to kill him, Wren gets injured and finds shelter at Maggie’s, shifting into his tiger form, which she handled pretty well everything considered, keeping him safe for four days. Wren and Maggie travel back in time to get proof that Wren didn’t kill his parents, where Wren’s father bites Marguerite in tiger form effectively giving her animal powers, making her a were-tiger. Lots of twists and turns in this book, the way everything turned out with Wren’s father was unexpected and I loved how Maggie loved Wren before she knew how much money he had, she loved him or who he was on the inside not what his standing was. A real page turner I couldn't put down.

Excelent Story - I am very impressed with Sherrilyn Kenyon's writing.

Wren (were-tiger/lepard) and Maggie (human) roamnce was so sweet. I was surprised to see Acheron's godly brother Savitar have a role and help in this book instead of Acheron coming to the rescue. It was a nice change. I don't know much about Savitar except for the fact that he is supposedly training Nick to be a Dark Hunter, however, I have a feeling there is something else planned for Nick besides being a Dark Hunter.

I'm glad Wren came out of his shell and faced his past to learn the truth of what really happened to his family. I'm glad he met Maggie and learned to trust. As far as Maggie goes, I liked her a lot because even though she was a Senators daughter/rich bitch, she was down to earth and didn't let her money status judge anyone whether they were rich or poor. I was so happy that she stood up to her father in the end.

I love how maggie was turned into a tiger and gifted with the powers from Wren's father and I love the part where Savitar comes in at the end after Wren and Maggie get married and gives them a gift from a friend (Nick, whom they have no idea it came from him), a gift of the mating mark for eternity.

I love Wren. I read Sherrilyn Kenyon's Bad Moon Rising before I read this book, and if you have read BMR, you know that Wren is in that book to an extent because it overlaps with Unleash the Night. I liked this story in that Wren and Maggie faced many challenges and through them all, they basically stayed together. What was most surprising was the revelation of Wren's father being alive all this time. I adored seeing Wren finally come out of his shell and Maggie telling her father off towards the end. Also, I liked seeing more of Dante Pontis. There hasn't been much of him since his and Pandora's story "Winter Born" in Stroke of Midnight, but he's a particular favorite of mine.
