In "Devil's Gate"

As a coroner, medusa Seremela Telemar has always felt more comfortable chatting over a dead body than over drinks. But when her wild niece, Vetta, runs off to Devil's Gate, a lawless town that has sprung up overnight in a modern-day gold rush, she knows she has to extricate her before the rebellious girl gets into real trouble. Though she's confident in her head snakes' ability to defend her against attackers, Seremela is still a bit nervous about braving this modern-day Wild West by herself.
Vampyre Duncan Turner is not about to let his new co-worker go into that chaos alone. His Vampyric power and lawyer smarts make him the perfect ally, and the fact that he already had his eye on Seremela for more personal reasons, doesn't hurt matters. Any romantic thoughts pull up short, however, when they arrive at Devil's Gate and learn Vetta is set to hang by morning.

In "Hunter's Season"

As a palace guard and assassin for the Dark Fae, Xanthe always wore a mask, hiding her emotions to do her duty. But when her identity is compromised, she trades undercover work for guarding Queen Niniane--a position that often brings her in contact with Chancellor Aubrey Riordan.
Aubrey's trust is shattered. A year ago his wife tried to assassinate their new queen in his name, a betrayal of everything he believes in. And now an attack on his life is proof the dark conspiracy is not yet over. Although injured and weak, Aubrey can't help but be drawn to this shy assassin and loyal protector. Xanthe is everything Naida wasn't, and the passion she stirs in him is something he thought had long passed him by.

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook!

This is a duology with two novellas in the series. I cheated and read this out of order because I've been wanting to read Seramela's story since she was introduced in Storm's Heart. I mean, I love Medusa, and I think of her as sort of a tortured heroine figure. I'm glad that Thea Harrison did her justice with "Devil's Gate."

Seramela is not like Medusa, but she is a Medusa species. Seramela seems like someone I would get along with and could be good friends with. I loved how Harrison explains the species and their characteristics. I do a lot of mythological and folklore art and Medusa has been a subject I'm gone back to multiple times. This story inspired me yet again to do more Medusa pieces. Duncan is the perfect hero for Seramela. I liked him from the beginning because he seemed like a cool guy. He's pretty darn droolworthy with his cultured Scottish accent and his protective but respecting of Seramela's capabilities and independence. He seems easy going but he has some intriguing depths, and boy he can handle himself. They are so well-matched, each with unique strengths. Although this was short story, there's a lot to love about it, and I was very satisfied with how it concludes. I do hope to read more about this couple that is shaping up to be one of my favorites. They are so romantic together. I really did sigh while I was listening to some of the scenes. I have to say that Thea Harrison's books are very beautifully romantic. I think that romance has changed somewhat where it's become more about chemistry and scorching hot and descriptive sex scenes, which is not bad, I just want to feel that there is a deep and enduring connection and I like to see that before they end up in bed together. The payoff was so great when the finally did go to bed together because it was more than obvious how they felt about each other. Along with the romance, the storyline is well developed and plotted. The thread running through is about a deck of tarot cards with preternatural power associated with them. The story begins with Duncan and Seramela's story and continues with Xanthe and Aubrey's story.

I was surprised to see that Aubrey was the hero in the second story, "Hunter's Season. " I became acquainted with him in Storm's Heart, as he is the Chancellor of Adriyel. I know that he doesn't look old, but I thought of him as being older. Technically, he's lived a long time because Dark Fae do live long lives. Eventually, I saw him as looking kind of like Hugo Weaving as Elrond from the Lord of the Rings movies. So to me this is a May-December romance. I don't know that it actually was meant to be though. I do love unrequited love stories, and this qualifies since Xanthe has been in love with Aubrey for ever. It's also a sort of forbidden romance in that Xanthe is just a soldier/assassin, and Aubrey is very highborn and highly placed in the aristocracy. It also counts as a cabin romance and a nursed back to health romance. So a lot of the tropes I enjoy in one book. I liked it a lot. Not as much as "Devil's Gate," but it's still really romantic and a very good story with a satisfying conclusion.

***It makes me sad about how

I strongly recommend this series if you like paranormal romance, fantasy romance, or fantasy with romance.

I read Devil’s Gate & Hunter’s Season when they where first published and loved both. I’ve been on an audiobook kick and decided to try out Ms. Harrison’s Elder Races series in Audio.

Destiny’s Tarot has the Elder Races Novellas Devil’s Gate #4.6 & Hunter’s Season #4.7 on it. Here we get to see some previously introduced characters that we meet in the Elder Races series. Even if you haven't read an Elder Races book you can still pick up these novellas, but I would recommend at least reading Books 1 & 2, so you can have a better sense of what is going on in the world. These novellas featured in Destiny's Tarot are fun, entertaining, and each have an HEA.

Below is my review for Devil’s Gate & Hunter’s Season:

Devil’s Gate

Devil’s Gate features Seremela a Medusa and Duncan a Vampyre. These characters are secondary characters introduced somewhere along the line in the Elder Race series.

As for the story, their is no shortage of action, adventure, and danger. The romance is sweet between these two and their is some major sexual tension that will combust by the end. I also have to point out that when we think of Medusa we don't think nice creatures, so I have to say I like how the author portrayed her Medusa’s. They weren’t creepy, but came of different and noteworthy.

Audio Review Dec. 2017: Sophie Eastlake did a wonderful job with the voices and bringing out the danger and attraction; between Seremela and Duncan. I will say Duncan’s voice was ok, not unpleasant, just a little to raspy for my liking and what I pictured him sounding like, but this didn’t deter me from enjoying this novella again.

Hunter’s Season

Hunter’s Season features Xanthe a Dark Fae Assassin and Aubrey a Dark Fae Chancellor. These characters are secondary characters introduced in the Elder Race series. We meet Xanthe in Devil's Gate and Aubrey in Storm's Heart. These two come together to create a lovely and passionate romance.

This novella was sensational with a heavenly HEA. Ms. Harrison delivers a beautiful blossoming romance; between two very different characters. Their romance builds slowly, is sweet, and adorable. I love how the author put so much attention on their romance.

I adored Hunter’s Season. The conclusion was satisfying, the romance is charming, and we get a little danger and intrigue too. Harrison shows us just how much love can truly heal.

Audio Review Dec. 2017: I enjoyed the audio narration for Hunter's Season. Sophie Eastlake did a superb job with the voices and bring out the blossoming romance between Xanthe and Aubrey.

Rated: 4 Stars

The Elder Race series brings us a verity of unique supernatural's, worlds, and so much more. It’s an entering series to read or listen too. I highly recommend diving in.

Sophie Eastlake reads both stories and does a wonderful job. I had no trouble telling one character from another.

Elder Races 4.6 - Devil's Gate ***** 5 stars

The 3rd of 4 short novellas that loosely revolve around a magical deck of Tarot cards that is somewhat self-aware.
In this story, Duncan, a 200-year-old vampire lawyer has been attracted to Seremela, a sweet 400-year-old medusa, for a while. Seremela's needy sister has asked her to help extricate her 20-year-old troubled niece from her latest poor decisions. Duncan refuses to let her go into danger alone.
I loved the MCs and the way TH describes them and their attraction to each other.
Hopefully, they will show up again in future stories!
The setting of this one was like a modern-day gold rush, in the same area that the last Tarot story took place. Lawlessness rules.

There's a bit of intrigue, a bit of action, and a sweet romance.
I was a little disappointed at first with the way TH rewrites the whole mythology of Medusa into a line of mythical creatures instead of a sister to the fates. But I ended up loving the 'new myth' she created and the descriptions of her snakes (those mischievous little guys!).

Safety was really good (view spoiler)

Elder Races 4.7 - Hunter's Season **** 4 stars

Xanthe and Aubrey. Love the names!
Well this is the last short story revolving around a magical deck of tarot cards. Just a sweetly romantic little amuse bouche for between longer reads.

The reader, Sophie Eastlake was wonderful.

Warning, this one has a huge ass spoiler for book 2.
But ironically I feel like going back and reading book 2 now (I originally couldn't get into that one).

Xanthe was the mysterious assassin from Devil's Gate (Elders 4.6). Queen Niniane makes her one of her personal guards. As such she often runs into Aubrey whom she has always admired from afar.

Aubrey is the queen's chancellor and as such, an elf of great power, yet he's also a nice and honourable man. But also a man who is sad and cast adrift personally since his wife died a traitor. He questions his own judgment now. He does notice Xanthe when she returns from her last job as an assassin. He notices her because she is everything his wife was not. She is honourable and loyal and scrupulous about fulfilling her duty.
She also has a sensuous mouth and well.... she is prettier every time he sees her.

He is attacked and almost killed and it is Xanthe who must nurse him back to health. And so hidden together, they enjoy an intimacy that might never have otherwise happened. Especially in a class strapped society like the dark fae court. The chancellor and a nameless palace guard??? shocking!

I really enjoyed this one. Sweetly romantic with just a bit of action and a dash of intrigue. But mostly just two people who have a lot in common but are from very different walks of life, falling in love. It's not insta, but it is fairly quick as it is a short story. My only complaint is that Xanthe seems so alone. I wondered if she had no friends and it made her character feel a little unfinished.

Lots of cameos of Tiago and Niniane (less)

OK so again doing this in audio this time, read the first time.

Devil's Gate- 4.5 stars
This is really good. The shy medusa gets a companion of Duncan while going to retrieve her wayward niece from the devil's gate. Little do they know the trouble that is brewing there. Luckily a tough and savvy lawyer is good to have on hand. They have really good chemistry. Didn't like that Seremela is pretty much used and discounted by her sister and think that she should deal with her niece on a different level now without the sister in between.

Hunter's Season 5 stars
I liked this the best of all the Tarot novellas. It seemed like a complete story. Xanthe, who was the fae that took the deck in the last novella, has always been in awe and a little in love with the noble Chancellor Aubrey. She is a commoner even though a palace spy and now guard so keeps to her place in the structure of the court. When Aubrey comes to stay with her for his protection, the structure of the palace and nobles is gone but Xanthe still acts her place. It is up to Aubrey to figure out if there is something there.

Devil's Gate 4.6

The box of Tarot cards was stolen by a young medusa Vetta at the end of the previous book and ends up at the lawless gold rush town of Devil’s Gate. Now her aunt, Coroner Seremela Telemar has to go rescue her with the help of her vampire friend Duncan Turner.

Fave scene: the drunken snakes’ story.

Hunter's Season 4.7

After helping Seremela get Vetta out of Devil’s Gate in the previous story, Xanthe was given the Tarot cards to give to the elders when she returned home to the Dark Fae homeland. But she couldn’t let them go and kept them for herself. Since her identity is compromised, Xanthe joins the Queen’s personal guard where she meets Chancellor Aubrey Riodion and feels an instant attraction.

Fave scene: putting away all the groceries and returning the Tarot box.

What a fun read of two novellas with characters I wondered and hoped would have more written about them. Seremela, a medusa, and Duncan, a vampyre lawyer, go on the hunt in a very bad place for Seremela's wayward niece. Xanthe, royal guard in Adrial, and Aubrey, Royal Chancellor of Adrial, are forced together (much to Xanthe's delight) as Xanthe hides him from assassins and nurses his sword wounds. Both are a tiny bit steamy but mostly tender and loving. A very nice addition to the Elder Races series.

I truly loved this short stories far more than the previous Tarot collections. I may be biased on the rating, since I enjoyed the whole series. Ended up starting a new series after the Elder Races which disappointed me. Reason for being late on updating the rating 😂 I read the whole series again!! ❤️ Yeah, I think I really like PRN’s ☺️

Devil's Gate
5 stars
I think one of the things I have enjoyed most about Seremela's character (who first appeared as the medical examiner in Storm's Heart and was seen again in Serpent's Kiss) is her head snakes. They are curious and often unruly. Despite being so deeply connected to Seremela, they seem to have personalities and minds of their own. I often found them quite hilarious. Harrison did a great job giving life to the head snakes and fully incorporating them in the story. In any given situation we see reactions from Seremela, Duncan, and Seremela's head snakes. I would've been sorely disappointed had the snakes not been so integrated into the story. I was not disappointed in the slightest.

Tying into this is Duncan's character and how he is uniquely suited for Seremela (and her head snakes). With the snakes being such an integral part of Seremala, one cannot have one without the other. The head snakes like Duncan (a lot) and wish to show it. Duncan goes beyond merely tolerating the head snakes. He loves them too. Others often find them snakes disgusting and sometimes treat Seremela almost like a pariah because of them - segregating her from the general population. Without his whole-hearted acceptance (and enjoyment) of the head snakes, I wouldn't have believed them them to be a good match.

Hunter's Season
4.5 stars
Of the two books included in Destiny's Tarot, this was my least favorite. While I really liked Xanthe and also like Aubrey, I wasn't able to get into the book as much as the other. The book seemed a bit abbreviated and quite as smooth as Devil's Gate, but was still enjoyable.

Devil’s Gate, elder races book 4.6 (r Jul 15/18) Duncan and Seremela’s love story is sweet, and almost old fashioned. I’m still not sure what attracts Duncan to Seremela, but I love that he sees her differently than anyone else.

Hunter’s Season, elder races book 4.7 (r Jul 16/18) I enjoyed Xanthe and Aubrey’s love story more the second time around. I’m reading (listening) to the series in order, back to back. Although there is a large social gap between them, their love felt genuine, and they are well matched.

Devil’s gate, elder races 4.6, samhain, 2012, 97p, medusa and vampyre
Loved reading more about Saramela and Duncan. They fall in love quickly, but it was believable for me. Very sweet, chemistry, one sex scene at the very end. Ms. Eastlake is such a good narrator. She voices the Elder Races characters so well.

Hunter’s season, elder races 4.7, samhain, 2012, 119p.
It took me a bit to transition from my perception of Aubrey as an old man to Aubrey the vital, mature, sexy hero. Xanthe was easy to admire - strong, capable, loyal, athletic, lean. The setup to get them together to fall in love was manufactured, and enjoyable. I loved how he could be cranky with her and she could let down her guard for him. They each give the other something unique.

Again, I avoided the novellas thinking it would be less than the books but they actually enhance the series by shelling out more details that increase the reality of the elder races world./run on sentence.

Devil's Gate
-Seremela is a character from Serpent's Kiss, which I loved. In this novella, she finds her mate in Duncan, Carling's protege. Seremela is kind of the shy and finds it surprising that Duncan is attracted to her. Duncan is kind of a kick ass lawyer and finds Seremela endearing. When family trouble arises, Duncan goes to assist her, which takes them to Devil's gate. Here, they find that her niece is in danger of execution. They find the real killer, which leads to the second novella.

I think the most memorable scene for me was the snakes wrapping around Duncan's body while they were making love. That was kind of hot.

Hunter's Season
-Xanthe is an assassin. This novella was just alright. I didn't really like Storm's Heart since it paled so badly in comparison to Dragonbound. I kind of see it as the lesser cousin who tags along. Anyways, Xanthe and Riordan discover happiness in each other after going through the hardships that visited the Dark Fae kingdom. Xanthe has a sort of idol-worship going on but they get past that and fully get to know each other. Riordan is this workaholic but he gets a break when he is attacked by his former father in law.

Another great short story collection. Unlike the previous tarot collection, this featured characters we had met in the main series. Some we even met in a few books. It's fun to see that there can even be a HEA for supporting characters as well as the main ones.

I also loved the tarot deck. I loved that it made it's way through all 4 stories. It seems based on the end of the last story here that they will no longer be making their way through couples and bringing people together, but it does leave it open for the possibility that they could make a reappearance, maybe even in one of the main stories. That would be fun!

I really enjoyed my re-read of these - this time in audio. I have really come to love Sophie Eastlake's performance of Harrison's stories, both of which were good. But I really loved the HEA for the fae couple in Hunting Season. I really wish that the tarot deck would find it's way back in the world for more of these Elder races shorts.

Technically I had already read the second story but I really wanted to read about Saramella & Duncan. Loved her since she was introduced in Niniane & Tiago's story. Enjoyed her showing up in Rune & Carling's story. Glad she found some love herself.
