Description: A DIRGE (Small-pipes tune)
Note by Whittaker: Almost all the tunes associated with the Northumbrian or Small Pipes are gay in character. The sweet tone of the instrument is more suitable to the cheerful strains and to quick lively runs than to expressions of deep emotion. But the dirge here presented forms a notable exception. It was the traditional tune to which members of the house of Dacre were carried to the grave, the lament being intoned by the piper attached to the family. Sir Walter Scott in “The Lay of the Last Minstrel” refers to this tune as “Noble Lord Dacre, he dwells on the border.”
