Biography[]

Midianites

The Midianites (to the right), their biblical parallel

Farmer Tom Riley meets Alice, a childhood friend of his son, Timmy, at a diner. She told her that she and Timmy went to another world during summer camp as children.

In 1972, Alice and Timmy were wandering in the woods, when suddenly, the found a smoking cabin. They found themselves in a strange place with two moons, it was another world called Marus. The two are frightened when they see some wild men on horses shooting as they ride around the cabin, but eventually, they meet Fletcher, who revealed that they were Adrians who have invaded Marus and are oppressing the Marutians. Upon seeing Alice's eyes change color, Fletcher realized that they have been sent by the Unseen One to help. Although he is unsure, Alice told him that he was meant to free Marus from the Adrians.

Fletcher and Timmy first created confusion by scaring the Adrians away with a cattle stampede. Next, Fletcher set fire to the Drivain Town Hall. Unfortunately, Timmy is arrested and thrown into jail by the Adrians, who suspected his involvement in the fire despite him just watching. The next day, Fletcher gathered his army, but Alice had him downsize his army twice so it will be obvious that the victory is from the Unseen One. Fletcher told the fearful man to go home and then he brought water for the men, he chose the three hundred men who drink from a shared cup. Under Alice's direction, Fletcher and Timmy snuck into the Adrian camp at night, overhear two Adrian soldiers revealing that they had nightmares about being destroyed by the Marutians.

Upon returning to their own camp, Fletcher ordered his men to bring noisemakers and sources of light. The army surrounded the Adrian camp, and at the signal from Fletcher, shines their lights, makes noise, and shouts, "For the Unseen One!" The Adrians drop their weapons and fled in terror. The Marutians applauded Fletcher and Alice, who attributed the entire victory to the Unseen One. Alice believes they are allowed to experience Marus so they will have greater reliance on God in this world before returning to the camp.

Tom is skeptical about this story, but Alice insists it was real. Later, Tom finds some writing about Marus in Timmy's journal and realizes that what the story Alice told is a lot like a classic bible story.

Trivia[]

  • The Adrians are based on the Midianites from the first Book of Judges with the whole story being based on how Gideon defeated them. Fletcher is Gideon, the Drivain Town Hall is altar to Baal in Ophrah, Marus is Israel, and the noisemakers and lights are the trumpets and torches.
