"After due deliberation, Madame Chan of the Atrivis Resistance Group agrees to the terms of partnership with Senator Mothma of the Alliance. May our factions be stronger together than apart. No more Mantooines! Down with the Empire!"
―Atrivis Resistance Group member Catta Dionize, in a message to Mon Mothma's rebellion[1]

Mantooine was an astronomical object located in the Atrivis sector where an Imperial garrison was based. As an armed rebellion grew in the sector, the Liberators, a resistance group based on Mantooine, captured the local garrison, but were defeated by the Imperial Navy shortly after.

Description[]

Mantooine was a terrestrial astronomical object located in the Atrivis system[3] of the Atrivis sector, within an intersecting portion of the Outer Rim Territories[1] and the New Territories.[2]

History[]

During Dooku's time as a Jedi Padawan, Master Yoda took him on a voyage to Mantooine, which he later chronicled in his journal.[4]

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, an Imperial garrison was established on Mantooine. However, an armed rebellion against the Empire developed in the Atrivis sector,[1] with Mantooine having its own resistance group[5] known as the Liberators. Another rebel cell known as the Atrivis Resistance Group was also active in the sector, based at Generis Station, but operated apart from the Liberators.[1] In 5 BBY,[6] the Liberators seized the Mantooine Imperial garrison, but were crushed by the Imperial Navy shortly afterwards. The events on Mantooine were covered by news reports. As a result of the Liberators' demise, Travia Chan, the leader of the Atrivis Resistance Group, was prompted to agree to terms of partnership with a larger organized rebellion against the Empire, secretly headed by Senator Mon Mothma, that same year.[1]

In light of the Liberators' defeat on Mantooine, the leadership of Mothma's rebellion introduced an award called the Mantooine Medallion, which was presented by members of the high command to rebel personnel that showed exceptional bravery in the face of an enemy force. The medallion was first issued to surviving members of the Liberators in the aftermath of their cell's defeat, but continued on to be the fourth highest decoration awarded by the high command, being presented numerous times to those that made exceptional contributions towards the readiness of the rebel military.[5]

By 2 BBY,[7] Mantooine became a regional headquarters and operations sector for Mothma's rebellion. It was marked as such on a map of the galaxy that listed rebel safe worlds, starfighter hubs at level five or higher, regional headquarters and operations sectors, and deep space caches.[1] That same year saw the rebellion's formalization as the Rebel Alliance.[8] By 1 BBY,[9] the rebel UT-60D U-wing starfighter/support craft had been used as a troop transport on Mantooine thanks to the influence of General Antoc Merrick.[3] The U-wing's use there was noted in a report from Merrick to Mothma in which he proposed the wider use of U-wings as a multi-role starship. That report, as well as the map of rebel locations, were soon incorporated into an archive of non-electronic documents known as The Rebel Files by archivist Hendri Underholt.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Mantooine was first mentioned in Fantasy Flight Games' 2016 canon sourcebook Lead by Example.[5]
