John Goodspeed is the posthumous overarching protagonist of the adult animated comedy series Final Space. He's Gary Goodspeed's late father who gave his life to save Earth 20 years before the show's events.

He was voiced by Ron Perlman.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • He had several missions with Jack from the 29 years John worked with him, implying he did many more admirable actions before his final mission.
  • Despite telling Sheryl to leave his house after finding out she was actually a spy, it should be noted that he was anything but happy with that decision, as he only did that due to being shocked that she spent a year with him and had a child together just so she could get information to her superiors, and John's facial expressions after doing so make it clear he feels remorse for doing it.
    • Also, H.U.E.'s holograms that he made to show Sheryl an alternate future imply that if she explained why she was spying on him, John would have forgiven her.
  • He worked very hard to built the anti-matter bomb to save the Earth from being destroyed.
  • He was a very good father towards Gary, always acting nice to him even in the worst moments.
  • To comfort Gary about his mission to fix the Final Space breach, he gave Gary a caterpillar as his pet animal so he wouldn't be sad about him leaving, this would later have an impact on Gary's life, as when he met specimen E-351 and started becoming great friends, he gave him the name Mooncake after remembering his now dead caterpillar.
  • He gave Gary advice on how to be with Quinn after he met him 20 years later.
  • He helped Gary in his mission to save the universe from the Lord Commander by telling him about the second anti-matter bomb located in New York.
  • He sacrificed himself to close the Final Space breach and save the universe from being destroyed by it.
  • In his last moments he told Gary to try his best to close the Final Space breach in the future, and even after Gary started questioning that his best wasn't good enough, John said that it was good enough for him.
  • His sacrifice would cause the creation of Mooncake, who would help Gary in the future and save his life dozens of times.
  • When Gary was nearly killed and was going to the afterlife in "Chapter 10", John gave him a choice to go with him to heaven or stay behind and try to find his friends, after Gary refused to go to heaven because he didn't know if his friends were there as well, John is seen smiling due to how he admired the fact that Gary was willing to give up his chance of luxury to see if his friends were okay.
  • His actions are so admirable, that even characters like Quinn and Bolo call him a selfless hero.
  • While he's not the most admirable character in the show, this isn't a prevention as he has far less screentime than most characters and he has a ton of impact in the story to the point that he easily passes the standards.
  • Overall, John serves as an example of what a great parent should be and serves as a good parent in comparison to Sheryl, who abandoned Gary after John died.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • When Gary told him that his friend Jack would become the Lord Commander, and would commit many atrocities in the future, John sadistically beats Jack up with his son. However, John originally didn't believe Gary due to how much he trusted Jack, and beat the latter up only after Gary showed John his robot arm, which was created because Jack would go on to rip off Gary's real arm. Also, this scene is played entirely for laughs, and it was before some of his most admirable actions, so it isn't a major prevention.

Trivia[]

  • John's voice actor, Ron Perlman, is well known for voicing the Lich from Adventure Time and Sozin from Avatar: The Last Airbender, ironically, they are Pure Evil and Near Pure Evil respectively, in contrast to John's character who is Near Pure Good.
