The GOAL! Ring (also spelt as the Goal Ring and also called the Goal Roulette or the Goal Gate) is a roulette ring first appearing in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Since then, it has primarily appeared in the Yoshi series appearing at the end of each level acting as the goal. The GOAL! Rings are typically found in every level except for levels featuring bosses. The GOAL! Ring usually is a circle having all the flowers the player collected in that level and blue dots (non-collected flowers are replaced with larger circles with faces which are considered the same as the blue dots). When a Yoshi passes through the GOAL! Ring it will start spinning slower and slower. After the GOAL! Ring stops spinning, it will land on either a blue dot or a flower. If it lands on a blue dot, then nothing really happens and the game proceeds to display the scoreboard and then unlocks the next level. However, if the roulette stops on a flower, you will play a Bonus Challenge and then go to the scoreboard and then unlock the next level, in Yoshi's New Island, you will earn a certain number of Medals (depending on how many Smiley Flowers were obtained). Whenever players jump through a GOAL! Ring, all onscreen enemies will turn into Coins.

Super Princess Peach features a similar type of goal, the Goal Gate.

GOAL Ring GBA

A Red Yoshi near the GOAL! Ring

The GOAL! Ring is first seen in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. In these games, they are found at the end of each level and consist of a ring of dots and flowers (the flowers representing each Smiley Flower collected in the levels (otherwise a faced flower bud will be in it's place which functions like the dots). When a Yoshi jumps through the GOAL! Ring, he will toss Baby Mario over to the next Yoshi and from here, the GOAL! Ring will continue spinning until it lands on either a dot or a flower, if it lands on a flower, a Bonus Challenge can be played before advancing onward.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

GOAL Ring DS

The GOAL! Ring returns in Yoshi's Island DS, in this game, it functions similarly to how it did in the previous games once again appearing as the goal at the end of each normal level and consisting of a ring with dots and flowers (representing those that have been collected throughout the level). Just as before, when a Yoshi jumps through the GOAL! Ring, he will toss the baby over to the next Yoshi and if the GOAL! Ring's spinner stops on a flower, a Bonus Challenge can be played which gives an opportunity to earn extra lives. Also, the GOAL! Ring is more of a blue color in this game unlike before where it was more purplish and white.

Yoshi's New Island[]

The GOAL! Ring is seen again in Yoshi's New Island retaining it's function from past games. Once again, the GOAL! Ring is found at the end of each normal level acting as the goal and when a Yoshi jumps through, he tosses Baby Mario over to the next Yoshi. If the GOAL! Ring stops on a flower, Yoshi will earn a certain number of Medals for each flower collected in the level (the maximum being five) if 30 Medals are obtained in a world, a minigame is unlocked for the Yoshis to play.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]

GOAL! Ring Wii U

A GOAL! Ring in the Woolly World.

The GOAL! Ring returns in Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. In these games, they function as they did before appearing at the end of each level acting as the goal, they once again also sport flowers (based on the Smiley Flowers collected in the level) but this time, they also have Beads which provide the Yoshis extra beads if landed on. Whenever the Yoshis jump through, they advance to the next level, also, rather than the GOAL! Ring slowing down and then stopping upon being jumped through, the GOAL! Ring stops spinning effective immediately upon completion, getting a Flower allows the Yoshis to have a try at a Bonus Game and also a shot at Gold Rush in Poochy Dash in the remake.

Trivia[]

  • The GOAL! Ring gets its name from the text displayed above it when jumped through: "GOAL!".
  • The GOAL! Ring is similar to the Goal Box found in Super Mario Bros. 3 as both are goals that function like roulettes.
