Chain-Links (also spelt as Chain Links or Chainlinks and also called Metal Screens) are a type of Fence that is first seen in Super Mario Sunshine. These Fences are often times attached to wires or objects and are often seen moving. Chain-Links can typically be used to traverse open gaps. In some games however, they can only be climbed while under certain effects making them slightly more limited than Fences.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Sunshine[]
Chain-Links first appear in Super Mario Sunshine. In this game, they can be found all around Ricco Harbor and are attached to the moving poles and girders around the Harbor. Some of these Chain-Links have Flip Panels around them allowing Mario to flip to another side of the Chain-Link. Klambers can also be seen around the Chain-Links, to beat them, Mario needs to punch them from the other side of the Chain-Link (or ground pound if it's below him). Several Chain-Links can also be seen below Pianta Village, several Coins can also be found down here. They also appear in Pinna Park where several Electro Koopas can be seen walking along them.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]
Chain-Links reappear in Super Mario 3D World as well as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury being found in several stages such as Chain-Link Charge. In this game, Chain-Links can no longer be climbed on freely unless the heroes are under the effects of a Super Bell, while in any other form, the heroes can Wall Jump off the Chain-Links. Chain-Links are often seen attached to poles and move along set tracks either serving as a hinderance or as a means for reaching collectibles such as Green Stars.
Super Mario Maker 2[]
Chain-Links are seen again in Super Mario Maker 2 this time appearing exclusively in the Super Mario 3D World style of the game. In this game, Chain-Links act as an alternative to the usual Semisolid Platforms and are used to hold them up. In this game, Chain-Links are merely used for decorative purposes and cannot be climbed on.
Trivia[]
- Despite the Chain-Links functioning almost identically to Fences in Super Mario Sunshine, they are still named as Chain-Links in the Nintendo Official Player's Guide for the game.
