The Lowland Clan is one of the three clans of the Tenakth tribe featured in Horizon Forbidden West. They are the southwestern-most of the three Tenakth clans, inhabiting the forests and jungles south of the Sky Clan's territory and west/southwest of the Desert Clan's territory. Their territory extends to the western coast.

History[]

Colombia Drop hologram and Lowland Clan art

The Lowland Clan have grown through the inspiration of the Colombia Drop Vision in the Memorial Grove. The name of their territory, the Raintrace, appears to derive from the distorted hologram's glitched pronunciation of "rainforest." The hologram describes soldiers who are "at home in the jungle".

At some point before Hekarro, the Commander of the Lowland was a woman known as Nekivva.[1]

The Clan Wars[]

From what little is known regarding the specifics of the Clan Wars, the Lowlanders fought against the Sky Clan for control of the Stand of the Sentinels, a forest in between the two clans' primary territories. By the end of the Clan Wars, the Stand of the Sentinels was under the control of the Lowland Clan.

On August 26, 3020,[2] the then-Commander of the Lowland Clan, Hekarro, conquered the sacred Memorial Grove in a decisive victory. At the same time, AETHER arrived in the Memorial Grove as it escaped GAIA's self-destruction, triggering a Vision never before seen by the Tenakth. Believing it to be a message from the Ten, Hekarro united the clans, ending the Clan Wars.[3]

Following his victory, Hekarro relinquished his position as Commander to become the tribe's first Chief. The position of Lowland Commander was ultimately taken by his former squadmate Atekka, who has held her position ever since.[4]

The Derangement[]

Around the time of the Liberation of Meridian, the Lowlands became afflicted by the Red Blight, which also poisoned the water, causing it to turn red and by dubbed "Blood Choke" by the locals, killing the fish that served as their food source and robbing the clan of safe drinking water. The clan's capital, Thornmarsh, was especially impacted due to its location in the marsh. Without an understanding of the root cause, the Lowlanders could do little more than curtail the worst of the growth and search for safer sources of water.[5]

Adding to the Lowland's troubles was the arrival of Far Zenith: after establishing a base on an island off the Raintrace's coast, the Zeniths set up machine lures in the Valley of the Fallen to keep anyone from getting close.[6] The Lowlanders, while ignorant of the cause of the increased machine presence, noticed the lights generated from the Zeniths' activities.[7][8] To protect the clan, Atekka ordered the Valley closed off.[9]

Regalla's Rebellion[]

The Lowland Clan stood behind Chief Hekarro when Regalla began her war against him: unfortunately, they bore the blunt of much of the rebels' assaults, with at least one settlement, Fenrise, falling to Regalla's forces.[10] Like with the other two clans, some members of the Lowland Clan sided with Regalla and left to join her rebellion, including the grandson of the Lowland Chaplain, Dekka.[11]

Horizon Forbidden West[]

The Easterner Aloy would be of instrumental aid to the clan during this time, helping dispel the Blood Choke,[12] reclaim Fenrise[10] and clear the Valley of the Fallen.[13]

Society and culture[]

The Lowland Clan are masters of their jungle home, specializing in tricks, traps, and stealth. They will even blend into the jungle to let lurking machines thin out their enemies.[14] The outlander Fashav noted that his Lowlander companions would intuitively shift in stance and gait once they entered the Raintrace.[15]

Of the three clans, the Lowland Clan is the most loyal to Chief Hekarro, who was once their Commander, and stand behind him without question.

A site of particular reverence for the Lowland Clan is the Valley of the Fallen, a cove that rests in the southeast of their territory. A traditional test of endurance for Lowlanders is to survive in the valley for a total of ten days.[15]

Trivia[]

  • From the color of their tattoos and face paint, it appears that the Tenakth encountered in Horizon Zero Dawn, including Ullia, were from the Lowland Clan.
  • During development, the Lowland Clan were referred to as the "Jungle Tenakth".
