Regalla's Rebels are an offshoot of the Tenakth tribe. They are not part of any of the three main clans, but rather a rebel faction, led by the former Marshal Regalla.
History[]
Formation[]
There are many Tenakth who are unable and unwilling to forgive the Carja for the atrocities committed during the Red Raids. Among those Tenakth was Regalla, who was once the greatest Marshal of the Tenakth's Chief Hekarro. When Hekarro accepted the Carja's reconciliation efforts, she deemed him a traitor and challenged him for leadership of the tribe. Hekarro triumphed, but gave Regalla mercy rather than death due to her past service.
Sometime after the Battle of the Alight, Regalla was approached by a band of Oseram calling themselves the Sons of Prometheus, led by a woman named Asera, and given an offer she could never refuse. The Sons of Prometheus would provide Regalla with overridden machines, allowing her to kill Hekarro, take his position as Chief of the Tenakth, and invade the Sundom: in exchange, Regalla would launch an assault on the base of Far Zenith. Seeing her burning hatred for the Carja in Asera, Regalla accepted.
Regalla knew nothing of what Far Zenith was, or that any assault she led against them was destined to end in utter defeat. Her attack would only serve as a distraction that would allow Sylens, the wandering maverick responsible for orchestrating the deal, to steal what he wanted from the Zenith base. Much like the Eclipse, the Shadow Carja cult Sylens had helped create, Regalla's Rebels were little more than pawns in a game they would never understand.
Attacking the Embassy[]
Regalla launched the rebellion at one of the Carja Embassies at Barren Light, where Carja soldier turned Tenakth Marshal Fashav was to be returned to the Sundom. Once both Carja and the Marshals were present, she made herself known. Declaring Hekarro and all of his Marshals as traitors pretending to be Tenakth, she launched her assault.
The attack was coordinated and precise: torrents of arrows and rebels riding machines were sicced upon the enemy from canyon walls atop the plateau. Regalla's forces kept the Clan envoys from intervening, and the soldiers in Barren Light were unable to take clear shots on the charging machines, leaving the Carja envoys and Marshals overwhelmed. The Carja were massacred, and most of the Marshals (Fashav included) were slain.
The one element Regalla hadn't planned on was Aloy, the Nora known as "the Savior of Meridian", who had interrupted the embassy in order to go west. After Aloy and her companion Varl defeated the assault's ground forces, Regalla's champion Grudda engaged them in combat. While Varl was quickly defeated, Aloy bested Grudda, for which Regalla chose to spare her life. Nevertheless, the rebels left Barren Light in triumph, the war against Hekarro begun.
The Kulrut[]
The assault on the Embassy was a powerful first blow, one that the tribe would not recover quickly from. The rebels began to fill the Clan Lands and No Man's Land, wreaking havoc on the Utaru and loyalist Tenakth. Each of the three clans were either unwilling or unable to provide much aid to their chief, and the death of most of the Marshals left Hekarro's forces greatly depleted. At least one settlement, Fenrise, was taken by the rebels. With the aid of the Sons of Prometheus, the rebels continued to override larger and deadlier machines, either stripping them for weapons or using them to fill their ranks.
With most of his Marshals dead (and the only known survivor, Kotallo, now without an arm), Hekarro had little choice but to hold another Kulrut. Wanting to kill Hekarro in front of the united clans, Regalla launched an attack on the competition. While Hekarro predicted the assault and enlisted the help of Aloy in the Grove's defenses, the rebels surprised the enemy with an attack from underground, using an overridden Rockbreaker to breach the Maw of the Arena from below. Rebels and overridden machines (including a Slitherfang) swarmed the capital, with Regalla charging forward to the Chief. However, the clans successfully fought off the attackers, and Regalla was prevented from killing Hekarro by Aloy's intervention.
The assault ultimately ended in utter failure, with the invaders either slaughtered or forced to retreat. The clans' conviction only grew greater in Hekarro's mission, and the tide began to turn. Aloy was dubbed by the clans as Hekarro's Champion, and she continued to provide strategic aid to the war efforts.
Final assault[]
Regalla remained undeterred, and prepared for a second assault of the Grove. This time, she brought everything she had, launching a deadly onslaught of human rebels and overridden machines. Initially, victory seemed inevitable, and Regalla had Hekarro cornered and at her mercy.
However, as it had been before, Aloy turned the tides. Flying in on a Sunwing, she dropped a charged energy cell from a Horus, releasing an electromagnetic pulse that incapacitated all of the overridden machines, allowing the human fighters to turn the tables. Aloy herself flew into the Grove and challenged Regalla to a duel. After a brutal fight, Aloy emerged victorious.
Current status[]
A small yet significant number of Rebels became disillusioned with the rebellion. Some saw it as more concerned with fighting fellow Tenakth than the Carja they were promised; others became disgusted at the dishonorable tactics their fellow rebels employed.
While some pockets of rebellion may still remain, the fall of both Regalla and the Sons of Prometheus have shattered any hope the rebellion has of long-term victory against any tribe or faction.
