Teaching
Teaching experience can be an important component of a student’s graduate education. Although there is no teaching requirement for graduate students in the department, all students are permitted to teach after successfully passing the general examination. Princeton graduate students may lead sections of undergraduate courses, called precepts, by working as an Assistant in Instruction (AI). AI training is offered prior to the start of each semester and is required before a graduate student is permitted to teach.
Professional Development
The History Department is strongly committed to the professional development of all students. The Graduate History Association elects a Professional Development Representative each year who acts as a coordinator for professional development events to prepare students for teaching and the job market.
The Graduate School believes that professional development is a critical part of graduate education at Princeton University. The Graduate School provides programming that is relevant to all fields and inclusive of academic, administrative, and industry careers.
Dossier Service
The History Department’s commitment to graduate students extends far beyond Princeton. We offer a Dossier Service as a means to help students on campus and alumni across the world who are on the job market secure fellowships, post-docs, professorships, and various careers outside of academia. The Dossier Service provides a centralized location for all application materials and recommendations, which are first reviewed by the Placement Officer and then compiled into a professional dossier and submitted to job listings as requested by the student. Email Lee Horinko for more information.
Davis International Center
The Davis International Center supports international graduate students by providing an orientation for new students, programs and events to cultivate social connections, and other resources to help with the adjustment to living in the United States. A dedicated international student adviser provides support to History graduate students and addresses questions regarding immigration status.
