Reflects magic cast at target.
Description
Reflect is a White Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It grants the reflect effect to a target, which bounces most targeted magic against the opposing party. Reflect is only usable by the White Magic skillset (meaning White Magic must be equipped to use it with Dualcast). Reflect is also one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand.
Reflect is also an enemy ability that can be used by Calofisteri and Omniscient.
Obtained[]
Reflect can be purchased for 6,000 gil at Moore.
Reflect can also be used by catching and releasing a Sorcerer, Stone Mask, or Neon.
Use[]
Reflect is a potentially useful spell in a variety of circumstances, but also potentially harmful. By reflecting targeted spells, the character will reflect a large number of offensive spells that could harm them, but will also reflect curative spells, bouncing off support spells onto the enemy. The only way around this is to cast Reflect onto the enemy also, use other healing abilities (such as healing items, mixes or summons), or to use Dispel to remove reflect.
When under reflect, most offensive spells cast against them will reflect onto the enemy, shielding them from a potentially large source of damage. The player can also deliberately cast offensive spells on them with the purpose of reflecting them onto the enemy. Some Blue Magic spells can be learned by granting the enemy reflect.
Summoning Carbuncle bestows the effect to the entire party, making it more turn- and MP-efficient. Reflect should be used if the player wishes to use it on an enemy, or target it more specifically. Another way to bestow reflect is via Reflect Ring accessory or the Dragon Defense mix, which also gives numerous other buffs.
Though Reflect shields the player from a great amount of magic damage, and avoids the party being influcted with harmful ailments, many spells bypass reflect (such as Meteor) or are otherwise not targeted. In these instances, Shell is a better way to reduce magic damage taken.
