Quest battles, also known as quest instance battles, solo duties, or special instances, are a type of duty in Final Fantasy XIV. They are single-player battles tied to quests, placing the player in a separate instance from the main world for their duration.
Gameplay[]
Like other duties, these battles have a time limit, and will enforce a level sync on the player. Starting in Shadowbringers, certain battles will also enforce an item level sync. Unlike other duties, they cannot be entered unsynced.
Starting with "The Fate of Stars" in patch 3.3, new solo duties began granting the player the Brilliant Conviction buff, which grants minor regen and stat boosts. As of patch 4.1, all prior duties gained Brilliant Conviction as well. Brilliant Conviction can be manually dispelled by the player should they seek a harder challenge from the duty.
Some battles enable the player to play as NPC characters. Thus far, these have included Alphinaud, Y'shtola, Hien, Thancred, Estinien, Alisaie, Urianger, G'raha Tia, Branden, Lamitt, Renda-Rae, and Nyelbert.
Due to their nature being bound to quests, battles cannot be repeated once the associated quest is complete without the use of the New Game+ feature, and not all quest featuring quest battles are available through New Game+.
If a player fails a battle, or are repeating it via New Game+, they will get the option to lower the difficulty of the battle to Easy or Very Easy. These give the player an Echo buff, increasing their max HP, damage, and healing by 50% on Easy, or 100% on Very Easy.
