I couldn't miss the chance to practice my drawing!
The following is a list of abilities in Final Fantasy IV. Some abilities were removed from the western SNES release, but were re-added in the PlayStation release. The Advance and PlayStation Portable releases use the same abilities but add more that can only be used if certain pieces of equipment are equipped. The Nintendo DS and the following 3D remakes do not use the GBA- and PSP-exclusive abilities, but use a new ability system called the Augment system.

Dbl Mtr | The Game Boy Advance version introduces another unused command. This was likely intended to replace the Twincast command when the Twin Stars were equipped on both Palom and Porom. |
3D versions[]
The following are the abilities usable in the Nintendo DS, Steam, iOS and Android versions. Many of them have been highly altered from their original appearances in previous versions, and several can be learned as Augment abilities.
Ability | Description | Party Member | Image |
---|---|---|---|
Attack | The Attack command will allow a character to attack an enemy with his/her equipped weapon. | All Characters | |
Items | The Items menu will appear when selected, listing all available items in the player's inventory. The player can exchange a character's equipped weapon or shield from one in the inventory or use Item Magic. | All Characters | |
Defend | The Defend command can be found by pressing right on the character's battle command window. Character's defending halves damage received from physical attacks. | All Characters | |
Swap Rows | The Swap Rows command can be found by pressing right on the character's battle command window. Attacks dealt with the Attack command are affected by being in the back row, all characters' special commands and magic spells are unaffected by row. | All Characters | |
Equip | Change weapon or shield during battle. | All Characters | |
Darkness | Cecil enters "Darkness" status for three turns, increasing the strength of his attacks, making all of his attacks dark-elemental, and inflicting damage to him whenever he attacks. Usable when Cecil is a Dark Knight and as an Augment ability. When using darkness with an elemental weapon (such as Ragnarok or Icebrand), the dark element will be added to the weapon's default element, producing an attack with two elements (e.g.) light and dark for Ragnarok, or ice and dark for Icebrand. | Cecil | |
Cover | Cecil intercepts physical attacks on an ally. Cecil will automatically use Cover on allies in critical status. Cecil cannot use Cover when he himself is in critical status. Usable only while Cecil is a Paladin. | Cecil | |
White Magic | Casts a White Magic spell the character has learned. Both Rydia and Cecil have limited spell lists and learn spells as they level up. Rydia is only able to use White Magic as a child, and Cecil can only use White Magic as a Paladin. Tellah knows a handful of spells as first and remembers many more later. Fusoya has access to every White spell in the game. Rosa and Porom learn spells as they level up and can eventually learn every White spell. | Cecil, Rydia, Tellah, Rosa, Porom, Fusoya | |
Black Magic | Casts a Black Magic spell the character has learned. Tellah knows a handful of spells as first and remembers many more later. Fusoya has access to every Black spell in the game. Rydia and Palom learn spells as they level up and can eventually learn every Black spell in the game. The exception is Fire, which Rydia learns in accordance with the story. | Rydia, Tellah, Palom, Fusoya | |
Summon | Summons a monster to attack. Rydia can only learn more summons by defeating certain enemies. One of these summons, Whyt, functions differently from other summons. | Rydia | |
Recall | Tellah casts a random Black Magic spell on all enemies. Recall may fail. Tellah may cast a spell he cannot normally cast with this ability. | Tellah | |
Salve | Edward uses a minor healing item on all party members. Usable as an Augment ability. | Edward | |

Kick | Yang executes a physical attack on all enemies. If Yang is equipped with a claw with a status or elemental property, that status or elemental property is also applied to the Kick. Usable as an Augment ability. | Yang | |

Usable as an Augment ability, and when used as an Augment, depending on the casters a different spell than normal will be cast. | Palom, Porom | |
