Matoriv is an eccentric old man said to be the most powerful Mage in the world. As a former companion of Avan, he has known Maam since birth. Strictly speaking, Matoriv's ability to cast both Mage and Priest spells marks him as a Sage; however he dislikes the hoity-toity implications of this title and still considers himself to fill a Mage's role in the party, coining "Grand Sorcerer" to refer to non-traditional Sages like himself.
Matoriv has mastered spells from the Frizz and Crack lines as well as other support spells like Zoom and Levizoom. He eventually created spells of his own, with his most powerful creation being Medroa. The grand sorcerer is also one of the few humans capable of casting the powerful Kasizz spell, eliciting fear and shock in Hadlar.
During the events of Valge Island he takes Popp as his apprentice, eventually teasing out the young Mage's potential to become a Grand Sorcerer even greater than himself.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's Bonds[edit]
Matoriv appears as a playable powerful Ice-based mage, obtainable in the Cold-Headed Grand Sorcerer event or by exchanging Seer Candles at Merle's Mystic Fortunes after the event's end. His Ally Board is in the shape of a snowflake, representing his mastery of ice magic. Late in 2022, his spellcasting reportoire expanded and he gained the ability to use Fire magical attacks, as well as Medroa.
During the duration of his acquisition event, having him as Luminary Leader's partner would grant additional tokens and upgrade jewels for the grand sorcerer. During that period, he would also obtain double exp.
