King Kong is an upcoming American Disney+ series based on the Joe DeVito King Kong of Skull Island novels officially endorsed by the Merian C. Cooper estate.
Summary[]
King Kong's origins and the mythology of Skull Island is explored in a serialized adventure.
Production[]
A screen adaptation of Joe DeVito's King Kong of Skull Island books has been in development since at least 2007 when Fantastic Pictures developed an ultimately unproduced film based on the initial book[1]. In 2017, a television series under the working title King Kong Skull Island that served as a sequel to the books was announced as being in development by MarVista Entertainment and IM Global Television[2], focused on a female-led expedition to Skull Island years after the original film's events that would have encountered Kong's mate and children.[3] After this announcement, the project was not heard from again.
On August 23, 2022, Deadline reported that a King Kong based television series is in development for Disney+.[4]
Trivia[]
- Disney's film company Hollywood Pictures previously distributed the film Deep Rising, which was meant to tie in to a reboot of King Kong.
- Disney itself previously released the 1998 film Mighty Joe Young, which was a very similar film to the King Kong franchise.
- This series is not connected to the Monsterverse franchise, and is made without the input of Warner Bros and/or Legendary Pictures.
