Miscellaneous items are usable items that are not equipped on a character's body via the "paper doll" interface. They can be subdivided into consumable items, socketable items, and others. Crafting ingredients are not included in this group.

Consumable items are kept in the player's inventory (or possibly belt slots in Diablo II) until they are used. They have limited charges or sometimes just one use. They may be usable via the inventory, belt slots, or hotkeys to select them as skills. Consumable items were cut significantly for Diablo III and beyond.

  • Spellbooks of the first game are used for learning or leveling up spells.
  • Potions of many varieties, particularly healing or mana potions, are available in the first two games.
  • Scrolls can be used to directly cast spells in the first game. In the second, only Scroll of Identify and Scroll of Town Portal are used. They were cut from the third game.
  • Tomes are used to stack scroll charges within one item in Diablo II rather than carrying each scroll separately.
  • Some Quest rewards in Diablo II are one-use consumables, but these are often used immediately upon receiving the reward.
  • Ramaladni's Gift is a one-use item which improves weapons in Diablo III.

Socketable items can be placed into the sockets of other items, which are usually equippable, for a variety of bonuses. Sockets were introduced in Diablo II.

  • Gems are the classic socketable item beginning with the second game. Gems have multiple colors which each give different bonuses.
    • Legendary Gems were introduced in Diablo III, although they function somewhat more like Runes, with numerous named varieties with predetermined effects.
  • Jewels come with randomized bonuses like other Magic Items. They are only found in Diablo II.
  • Runes are all predefined in both name and bonuses, but there are many varieties. Specific runes used together in the same item form Rune Words which grant additional dramatic effects. These are also only found in Diablo II.

Other items include:

  • Charms grant bonuses directly from the character inventory in Diablo II.
  • Legendary Potions are replacements for the default potion action in Diablo III, and are equipped directly to the action bar rather than an equipment slot. They may be reused indefinitely.
