The observation that different generations have different attitudes is as old as humanity itself. Lately I've been asked a lot in interpersonal exchanges and interviews what I think about #GenZ. And I think it's an interesting question because it's very multidimensional. My two cents on the subject: Each generation has its own influences and needs. From my perspective, the key is to listen. Valuing diversity also means valuing and integrating different generations. We need to stop pointing fingers and reducing generations to stereotypes. Everyone has a role to play, be it companies or leaders. Leading multi-generational teams is an important part of leadership training at Infineon Technologies. I personally use #ReverseMentoring and have already had many "aha" moments. Changing perspectives is valuable. It opens us up to new ideas from other generations and promotes mutual understanding. What do I take away from my exchanges with younger talents? They are keen to make a difference, take responsibility and pursue their visions with passion - that sounds promising to me. 😉 Let's work together and leverage the power of our differences! The European #electronics industry risks falling behind 💡 (by Dennis Dahlgren) Key segments of the EU's #electronicsmanufacturing industry are set to decline – undermining Europe’s #security, #industrial resiliency, and global competitiveness. A recent analysis by IPC reveals Europe's increasing reliance on foreign regions for electronics manufacturing in critical and strategic sectors such as #aerospace and #defence. Even with the adoption of the European Chips Act, the report – Securing EU’s Electronics Ecosystem – shows that the EU’s market share in critical electronics components other than #chips, such as #PCBs, electronic manufacturing services #EMS, and #advancedpackaging, will fall to 15% by 2035. Evertiq - Global has previously reported on the challenging situation the European industry is facing – especially the PCB industry. Over the previous two decades, the PCB industry in Europe has seen a severe decline, one could even call it an erosion. In passing the Chips Act, the EU made a strategic, but narrowly crafted commitment to the electronics industry – but rebuilding a robust and sustainable European electronics ecosystem requires revitalising and expanding electronics production beyond chips. STMicroelectronics to Build €5 Billion Plant in #Italy with #EU Chips Act Aid STMicroelectronics NV said it plans to spend €5 billion ($5.4 billion) on a #manufacturing plant for #chips and packaging in #Catania, #Italy in a multi-year project that’s being partly funded by the #EuropeanUnion's #ChipsAct. The Italian government, within the Chips Act framework, will give STMicro €2 billion in #subsidies, the company said in a statementon Friday. The plant, which will specialize in silicon-carbide manufacturing as well as testing and packaging, will start production in 2026 and targets hitting full capacity by 2033, it said. ESIA Calls for a Chips Act 2.0 The European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA), representing major players like NXP Semiconductors, Infineon Technologies, imec, and Fraunhofer, is urging the European Union to fast-track a second phase of its semiconductor strategy through a "Chips Act 2.0." The goal? To keep the region competitive in the fast-moving global race for semiconductor dominance. The original EU Chips Act, which became law in September 2023, seeks to mobilize €43 billion in public and private investment to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor capabilities, targeting 20% of the global market share by 2030. However, in a statement released Monday, ESIA warned that Europe must do more. While acknowledging the significance of the Chips Act as a "fundamental building block," the group emphasized the need to refine the scope, streamline funding processes, and fill existing gaps. Accelerating State Aid for Global Attractiveness One of the critical mechanisms under the Chips Act is providing state aid to attract global semiconductor manufacturers. Yet, delays in approval are hampering progress. For example, Intel’s proposed €30 billion mega-fab in Germany is still awaiting final approval. By contrast, Taiwan’s TSMC received €5 billion in support from the EU for its new chip facility in Dresden, but this came a year after the company’s commitment to invest in the bloc. ESIA advocates for the EU to fast-track these funding approvals to ensure Europe remains an attractive destination for chipmakers. Open Trade and Strategic Cooperation Beyond funding, ESIA calls for a more open trade policy to maintain global partnerships. They argue for a proactive approach to economic security rather than relying on protectionist measures. The Dutch government, under pressure from the US, has now announced further limits on the export of chipmaking machinery to China. The machines in question are ASML's 1970i and 1980i DUV (Deep Ultraviolet) immersion lithography tools. Toward a Coordinated Industrial Strategy Finally, ESIA recommends a coordinated, long-term industrial strategy led by a "Chips Envoy," an official tasked with aligning Europe’s semiconductor (and photonics?) goals across multiple industries. The global investor community has been captivated by the rise of AI, leading to a proliferation of AI startups in recent years. As of our latest count, there are around 200-210 hardware companies focused on AI applications worldwide. However, the challenge remains in distinguishing which of these companies will successfully commercialize their technology and which will remain "great ideas that never came to fruition." In my view, the key element determining success or failure is talent. Developing silicon is tough, and creating chips for AI-centric workloads is even tougher. AI hardware demands deep knowledge in mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering. Companies often struggle to build teams with the right mix of hardware, software, algorithm, sales, and marketing skills to not only bring their products to life but also sell them to customers who may still be skeptical about AI transformation. This is why I’ve been impressed by the success of Canadian AI hardware startups like Tenstorrent and Untether AI. These companies have assembled world-class teams, developed industry-leading solutions, and successfully brought their chips to market. For years, I’ve believed that Canada is a "sleeping giant" in terms of having world-class talent that many in the global community underestimate. Tenstorrent and Untether AI are winning because they’ve harnessed the human capital available in cities like Toronto. This reminds me of a conversation I had with Hugh Chow, CEO of Canada’s premier startup accelerator ventureLAB when Hugh highlighted that Canada has long been a key player in AI development. Canadian Machine Learning expert Geoffrey Hinton’s seminal research laid much of the groundwork for the innovations we see today. Cities like Toronto have a unique mix of hardware and software talent and offer various career opportunities at startups and established companies, creating a virtuous cycle that attracts even more talent. Hugh and his team at ventureLAB are passionate about the potential of AI to transform sectors like medical tech, drones, education, and elder care which is why they work closely with startup founders such as Niraj Mathur, COO of Blumind, to help them secure the funding and talent needed to strengthen their companies. What does the future hold for the compound #semiconductorindustry? THE COMPOUND SEMICONDUCTOR industry is now booming, having established itself as a significant player alongside silicon-based #semiconductors, bringing not only superior performance but also new functionalities that #silicon cannot achieve, such as light emission. These semiconductors are becoming increasingly popular in #powerelectronics, #RF, #photonics, and #microLED #displays. For power applications, sales are dominated by #SiC and #GaN devices; for RF applications, #GaAs and #GaN devices lead the way; for #photonics, #InP and #GaAs are the leading material systems; and for #LED / #display applications, GaAs and sapphire are the key substrate materials. The compound semiconductor industry is well-established, having formed an entire ecosystem, with its own equipment for crystal growth, #wafer manufacturing, front-end #manufacturing, #testing and packaging. According to recent market research by Yole Group, the value of compound semiconductor substrates is rising at a compound annual growth rate of 17 percent over the 2023 to 2029 timeframe, to reach US$3.3 billion. Underpinning this growth is an expansion in key facilities that are supporting a transition to larger #substrates. There is a migration to 200 mm #wafers for SiC and GaN-on-silicon, driven by power electronics growth in the #automotive and #consumer markets; in the photonics sector, the use of 150 mm InP is on the rise, spurred on by the datacom market; and in the microLED displays market, there is increasing use of 200 mm GaAs and sapphire. However, the latter application has been hit badly by Apple, who closed its microLED project earlier this year, after being the main player pushing for 200 mm substrates with it partner ams-Osram. Advanced Packaging Is Radically Reshaping the #Chip Ecosystem 💡 Periodically, analysts commenting on the chip industry will pronounce that Moore’s Law is obsolete. Yet while the speed of progress is slowing down, #chipmakers are still doubling the number of #transistors on an integrated circuit (#IC) approximately every 2.5 years. In the past, fundamentally new approaches for chip design never seemed to catch on. That’s no longer the case as fresh ideas that are essential for running some of today’s most important applications are rapidly gaining favor. One of the most significant of these new concepts is #advancedpackaging, which essentially accommodates an ever-increasing number of transistors by decreasing the size of electrical contacts. Traditionally, a #semiconductor chip focuses on performing one particular action or process. By comparison, an advanced multichip package incorporates multiple chips and processes into one component. This transformative approach integrates a multitude of semiconductor components into a single package, directly addressing the most critical semiconductor technical and commercial constraints. Hello, in our previous discussions, we explored various methods for estimating Resolution and SNR. One notable observation is the significant variability in resolution results among OEM manufacturers when using special resolution targets supplied with the tool. This variability often ranges from 30% to 40%. For instance, for a nominal resolution of 1.35nm, the resolution measured at one location could be 1.1nm, while at another location, it could easily reach 1.6nm. This variability is widely acknowledged among tool technicians and service engineers. The simplest approach to mitigate this variability involves measuring resolution at different sites, avoiding areas with high particle size variation and voids, averaging the results, and discarding measurements that could compromise the average. Everething based on manual judgment. This variability is a primary reason why HVM fabs wan't rely on resolution measurements and instead ensure QT wafers are run to confirm resolution effectively through CD measurements. Despite the industry's awareness of this issue, questions regarding the high variation of resolution targets remain unanswered. There are no articles in SPIE listings or any documented suggestions or BKMs. In this post, I aim to address this question in an intuitive manner. In our previous post, we attempted to replicate results from a single contact array site using a blurred (1-9 smooth kernel operation) through the Measurement Utility resolution estimator. As a reminder, we identified three distinct regions: Noisy (no smoothing), Linear (smoothing operation 2-5), and High variation (smoothing operation 5-9). Our approach with the MU showed similarities to traditional OEM resolution measurements with high variation results. This similarity arises primarily from heavy filtering in both cases—ours through smoothing operations (5-9) and OEMs through high frame acquisition (more 64 ). Additionally, larger CD contacts tend to exhibit slightly better relative resolution in our approach, likely due to greater edge length. Conversely, smaller contacts often have diminished relative resolution. However, OEM targets exhibit significant variations in particle sizes, each with different edge lengths. Consequently, different locations have varying distributions of particle sizes, making it impossible to obtain accurate resolution values.
