PsiloSybil (Demo)
A downloadable game
Buy PsiloSybil on Steam / Get the free Demo
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The final version of the game has now released on Steam. An up-to-date free demo is available from Steam as well. The itch distribution of the demo is now deprecated, since it's nearly impossible for me to mantain. There is nothing for you to do here -- head out to the Steam page!
A tough-as-nails 3D platformer in the vein of Crash Bandicoot, with the look and feel of early 32-bit games. You play as Sybil, a plucky mushroom, on a psychedelic journey to defeat the lord of the hogs.
As of October 2024, PsiloSybil is fully released, with 25 original levels. Buy PsiloSybil on Steam for access to the full game.
Each level has a mushroom NPC that you can save if you collect all the tokens. Also you can try your hand at the time trials, which require you at the very least to clear the level in one life. There's also an arcade mode, where you play through the levels in order and there's a lives system.
The game supports both Xinput (360) and DualShock (PS) gamepads including vibration when it's available (to the best of my testing ability). It also works on keyboard.

Will the Full release also be available on Itch or at lease on GOG?
wish I was nostalgic for this type of gameplay because I love the art style
i want to hug the mushroom
Ah yes, the Famous Smash Shroomdicoot
Liked the game alot and completed both levels, to be honest though felt that alot of it required a level of precision that is beyond what the player has. Also that spinning egg enemy was really annoying
This video serves as a more in-depth review but I really recommend you to play it by yourself.
Playing PsiloSybil was an absolute blast. It was tough but never felt impossible or cheap. The controls were tight and the level design made use of the moveset seamlessly. I felt actual joy after overcoming what seemed to be the hardest level yet, only to be thrown into an even harder one.
It's pretty rare nowadays to find a game that actually challenges me the way PsiloSybil did. Y'know, without devolving into either Kaizo Mario territory or just artificially increasing difficulty by giving everything bigger numbers. It was really refreshing to play through a hard but balanced game. And knowing that more's to come, it makes me really excited for this game's future.
These jumps are so mean sometimes, lol. You gotta make them by like a millimeter!
I feel like sometimes I end up moving away or towards the camera during jumps sometimes when I don't intend to.
faithful to the 90s PSX 3d platformer style. congrats on the release!
is there any chance of a 32 bit version showing up?
No, sorry. I don't have the resources to support 32 bit platforms.
I really like this... I heard about it through the Hubworld Showcase.
Is the mushroom girl fighting pigs because they hunt for truffles, or am I overthinking things?

almost a perfect game. it would be cool if enemies could die in a cool animation or fly away when you hit them like crash. also the name is kind of hard to remember!
This game is very hard, but doesn't feel impossible. Just asks for more percision and patience than I have. Could barely make it through a level normally, don't ask me to collect everything too.
Feels very faithful to its Crash 1 inspiration.
Technical issue I had was the joystick dead zone was a little too small for my Switch Pro Controller, so menu navigation was frustrating. And in game if I let go of the joystick the character would face the camera, inching every so slightly towards it.
I also like the alt costumes. Fun calls to others.
Hi! Thanks very much for your feedback
>And in game if I let go of the joystick the character would face the camera, inching every so slightly towards it.
iirc this game has a very forgiving deadzone, if you're drifting on neutral your controller has to be badly calibrated or defective. Have you tested the calibration on it?
Sooo...what to say about this game... While I think it has potential, the controls on K/M are so useless and they need to be redone. I know you recommend a controller so it was probably a bit of a mistake to play the game on K/M but it does have potential. Also, depth is pretty much non existent but I feel like thats done on purpose to capture the nostalgia of older PS1 games like crash. Anyway, I see potential and if you want to know more about what I thought then you can check out my video. Your game is fourth on the list
Hi! Thank you very much for your video!
So far noone else has observed any issues with the keyboard controls and I wasn't able to reproduce them with my testers. Most of my players use keyboard and confirm no controls inaccuracies. I'm thinking what you're getting may be specific to you. Would you be willing to hop onto Discord and help us troubleshoot?
I think it was more my experience rather than the actual controls. For me personally, they just felt clunky on K/M but like I said, it might just be me and they way I was playing the game. The main problem is that I would jump and the jump would feel limp in game making me fall off the edge and die. I'd have to honestly try and play it a bit more to see if it was just my experience with K/M and then compare it to controller to see if it was any better but from what I gathered, the game wasn't designed with K/M in mind which is okay. I'll give the game another try using both controller schemes in the future.
This game is a ton of fun and I love the aesthetic of everything. It's definitely a difficult game but once you get the hang of things you're able to get a flow going. Keep up the good work!
Well done! Really great game, it is in my Top 5 of this week!
Check my video!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it! Loved your video
Absolutely fantastic. I adore everything about this, from the perfectly emulated PSX palette to the crispy smooth music to the unique set of mushroom characters.
One thing I'll say about the gameplay is it's like if you took the difficulty of Stormy Ascent and multiplied by 5 or 6. The checkpoints are a bit more forgiving here than in Crash though so it's not as noticeable how often I die (and I died a lot). If anything maybe the hitboxes on some of the spike traps need slight adjusting.
This game's a true gem in the huge sea of PSX-like titles out there right now, and I'm very excited to see what comes of later development.
Hi! Thanks a lot, I'm happy you like it. Feel free to join the discord if you haven't already, we have an easier time discussing feedback there
Loved the game! I thought it was great with a difficulty that requires several tries but it doesn't feel unfair. Well done! I hope to see the completed game.
I'm all for requiring precision but I think the spike models need to represent their hitboxes better than they do. They could be tweaked a bit.
Other than that, though, really good. You'll die ten times at one part and on the eleventh you can just breeze through it. It has a really good sense of progress.
Nice. Will there be also an Android 4.1 OpenGL ES 2.0 release with game pad controller input support?

good

i have only played platformers where the controls does not require pin point accurate jumps so obviously i nearly smashed my laptop so "ten outta ten would nearly break my laptop again
I truly, TRULY need to see this game finished, it's only a demo and I already loved it! Good luck and thank you, this game is awesome!!
That is great to hear! If you haven't already, feel free to join the discord to better keep up to date on progress
I'll do, thanks you and good luck!
