Plot[]

In a flashback, Cole and his father Lou pay a visit to his mother Lilly, who is gravely ill. Cole tells her about getting into a fight with a bully at school but promises never to do so again. However, Lilly is not disappointed in her son's intent, and asks him to promise that he will always stand up against those who are cruel. Back in the present, Cole and the rest of the Upply explore Rock-Bottom in search of a way out, only to find their efforts fruitless. Seeing Cole's frustration, Wu questions his student, who admits to feeling close to his mother in the depths.

Remembering what Lilly told him about her own experience with the power of the earth, Wu encourages Cole to "let the earth connect with [him]". Cole does so, and his powers mark a path that, though it begins by heading further into the depths, eventually heads upward and enables the team to reach a higher cavern. They then find a magma pool, which Cole's powers tell them they must make their way across. Plundar is reluctant, but between Cole's encouragement and a roll of his trademark dice is persuaded to cross. However, when they are nearly to the other side, they are attacked by a creature made out of magma.

Cole marshals his allies in combatting the beast, with Adam dropping a boulder on the monster after Fungus encases it in ice. Having escaped, Cole uses his power to close the tunnel entrance behind them as a precaution. Plundar apologizes to Cole for his negativity, and the Upply resume their quest with renewed enthusiasm. Unfortunately, an ominous glow from behind Cole's rock barrier seems to indicate that his worries about the monster recovering and following them were entirely justified...
