On 30 October, IPAA National President Andrew Metcalfe AO delivered the 2024 David Hawkes Oration for IPAA Northern Territory. His speech tackled the complexities faced by public servants, emphasising the importance of navigating these ‘interesting times’ with integrity and purpose. Andrew shared valuable lessons from his career, highlighting that while uncertainty is a constant in the public service, public servants can successfully navigate through challenges and thrive in their work. Here are some quotes from his speech: 💡Public servants are always destined to work in ‘interesting times’… times will always be tricky, but it is indeed possible to successfully navigate them. 💡Culture is critical. Leaders must establish clear expectations of ethical behaviour. 💡You always make better decisions, and avoid bad ones, when you’ve discussed them and sought other people’s views. 💡Decisions by public servants can have a profound impact on people’s lives. 💡We have a solemn duty to undertake our work lawfully, with empathy and understanding, and in a fair and reasonable way. 💡It is one thing to have an initial rush of enthusiasm, but quite another to genuinely change an organisation and ensure that change endures. 💡Leaders need to listen, much more than they speak. 💡We must never forget those lessons of the past. 💡Managing in tricky times requires us to learn from our mistakes, but also to learn from what went right. 💡 The reality is that overwhelmingly two million or so public officials in Australia wake up every day determined to best serve their communities. 💡A strong ethical framework, and strong ethical practices, are fundamental to success. 💡 [IPAA] looks to influence further afield in a broader construct of a public sector that always acquits itself with integrity in its everyday actions. The Australian Bureau of Statistics social media team has been announced as a finalist in the IPAA ACT Spirit of the Service Awards in the Community Engagement category! As part of the judging process, Lauren Light and I presented a video to the judges and other finalists yesterday as well as answering a few questions from the judges. The video was three minutes long and had to be filmed all in one shot with no edits 😮 It was pretty tricky and I think we did the whole thing at least 10 times, but it was a very fun day at work 😂 Thanks so much to the efforts and fun from all the team Analiese Stitt Xavier Sitsky Ayden Poynter 🎉🎉🎉

Future leaders gathered bright and early last Friday for our Future Leaders Breakfast – the Big Question 2.0 with Michael Manthorpe PSM FIPAA, executive coach and public administration consultant. In his speech, Michael drew from his rich public sector experience to reflect on pride in public service, personal leadership, and resilience. We’d also like to thank Kieran Vassallo, director at the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, for facilitating the event, and Kylie Crane PSM GAICD, deputy secretary at the Australian Government Department of Education and Anthony Pronin, assistant director at the Defence Australia and chair of the IPAA ACT Future Leaders Committee, for sharing their insights during the panel discussion. Here are some takeaways from the discussion: 💡 If you feel pride in your work, you attract good people in your team. And when you attract good people to work with you, they multiply, and you continue to do good work 💡 You have to be an expert in your field – know your stuff but also allow others to have a voice 💡 Look to collaborate rather than to compete 💡 Don’t stop listening to your stakeholders 💡 Be razor sharp with your goals – clarity of purpose is empowering 💡 Public service is hard – things constantly shift, and you will make mistakes 💡 When something goes wrong, it’s what you do next that counts 💡 Own up to your mistakes and present ideas to solve the problem 💡 Public service is more than just a job. It becomes a vocation, but it’s not your life 💡 Carve out a life outside of work that is sustainable for you – this helps sustain you and gives you perspective 💡 Be your own advocate – support your resilience so you can also support the resilience of your team 💡 Curiosity is a defining quality of a leader – ask a lot of questions 💡 Have a healthy ego and stay humble – lead and serve every day with the exercise of curiosity 💡 The bigger the role, the stronger network you’ll need – be deliberate in building your connections. Let us know in the comments if you have more to add to the list 👇 #IPAAFutureLeadersCommittee
