2021 Music Hole Award Winner | |
This article is a winner of the 2021 Music Hole Awards. It won for the following category: Best Season 1+2 Song. It was also nominated for the category, "Best Marceline Song," but it didn't win. |
"Fries" is a song featured in "It Came from the Nightosphere." It was written by storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar. Marceline sang and played the Ax bass, while Finn beat-boxed the rhythm and recorded it on a Walkman. Partway through Finn dropped the beatbox, and Marceline stopped playing. This song is dedicated to her father, Hunson Abadeer, and how eating her fries made Marceline wonder if her father even loves her. Later on in "It Came from the Nightosphere," Marceline's dad apologized for eating her fries. He then said, "They weren't even very good; they were really cold."
The Ice King is also shown to know of the song as revealed in "Holly Jolly Secrets Part II" when he sang a cover of it wearing a wig similar to Marceline's hair, and also in "I Remember You" when he sung it, with Gunter wearing the same wig again.

Ice King's lyrics[]
Ice King covered the song in "Holly Jolly Secrets Part II." He wore a wig that resembled Marceline's hair and sang off-key.
Daddy, why did you eat my fries? I bought them they were mine, But you ate them, you ate my fries, And I cried, but you didn't see me cry. |
Daddy, Do you even love me? Well, I wish you would show it, 'Cause I wouldn't know it. |
Ice King's "Gunter" version[]
In "I Remember You," the Ice King once again sings "Fries", but this time changes the lyrics to refer to Gunter instead of to the song's original intention. Like in his tape, he wears a wig similar to Marceline's hair when doing it.
Gunter, why did you gunt my fries? I gunted them, and they were mine. |
What kind of gunt gunts his Gunter's fries, And doesn't even gunt him in the eyes? Gunter, there were tears there. If you gunted them, would you even care? |
Gunter, do you even love me? |
Original lyrics[]
In earlier drafts of the storyboard, the song had different lyrics. An earlier version of the song was released, performed by storyboard artist and song writer Rebecca Sugar. This version of the song was never aired; only the last three verses (with a minor change) were used by Marceline.
Daddy, Why did you leave me? You created me, So don't you wanna see me? |
Daddy, Why did you make me? If you're not gonna take me To get a burger and shakey? |
My cursed blood is your cursed blood, Come on back and be my bud. I can count your visits on my fingertips. Come back and give me presents from your business trips. |
Daddy why did you father me, If all you wanna do is bother me? Don't you know that I love you? When I only wanna see more of you. |
Daddy, why did you eat my fries? I bought them, and they were mine. But you ate them, you ate my fries. And I cried, but you didn't see me cry. |
Daddy, Do you even love me? Well I wish you'd show it, Because I wouldn't know it. |
What kind of dad eats his daughter's fries? And doesn't even look her in the eyes? Daddy there were tears there. If you saw them would you even care? |
Trivia[]
- It is seen in "I Remember You" and "Holly Jolly Secrets Part II" that Ice King keeps a wig that looks like Marceline's hair, which he uses to make impersonations of Marceline's songs.
- This is the first song that was sung in season 2 (excluding the theme song).
- In "Memory of a Memory," Marceline's father is seen eating Marceline's fries in her memory. Finn, who knows what happens next, tries to warn him not to eat them but is too late.
- Marceline states in the song that she bought the fries; in "Memory of a Memory," although the bistro seems abandoned, there's some money on the counter.
