The Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd Skipper Canteen or more simply the Skipper Canteen is a restaurant at the Magic Kingdom's Adventureland. Located in the former Adventureland Veranda restaurant, it is based on the Jungle Cruise attraction and serves as the main headquarters and mess hall for the Jungle Navigation Company that runs the cruises. Reflecting the international waters featured in the Jungle Cruise, the restaurant's menu features food from Africa, Asia, and South America.

Description[]

History[]

The Adventureland Veranda first opened in 1971 with the rest of the park and functioned as a counterservice restaurant until 1994. When it closed, the space was generally reserved for special events and served as the location for Pixie Hollow meet and greets with Tinker Bell and her friends from 2011 to 2014. The Skipper Canteen was announced as moving into the space at D23 Expo 2015 and opened to guests on December 15, 2015.

A portion of the Veranda space unused by Skipper Canteen would eventually be filled in 2018 by a Club 33 lounge called "The Captain's Quarters".

Layout[]

The Skipper Canteen has 222 seats spread across three main areas. The first of these areas is the main mess hall, which retains much of the original 1971 design. The main waiting area features portraits of the Falls family, with a traditional depiction of Doctor Albert Falls and a cubist portrait of his granddaughter (and current Jungle Navigation Co. president) Alberta Falls. Artifacts and ephemera from the Jungle Navigation Company's history can be found along the walls and in the balconies above, offices for different Skippers can be seen, including references to Disney Imagineers Marc Davis, Harper Goff, and Bill Evans.

The second area is a meeting room for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, accessed through a secret library doorway now permanently open. Bookshelves along the entryway feature references to Society members and numerous Disney films and attractions and several SEA club fezes are on display in a glass case. Within the SEA room are large maps of mythological creatures charted by SEA members, a display wall of butterfly specimens, and a painting of Doctor Albert Falls discovering the Cambodian Temple seen in the Jungle Cruise attraction.

The third area is the Jungle Room, the Falls family parlor, which features wood carvings of attraction scenes made from wood once used on the attraction's docks, stained glass chandeliers in the form of the Enchanted Tiki Room's birds, and one of the miniature boats from the Shrunken Ned's Junior Jungle Boats game on display in a glass case.

Easter Eggs and Trivia[]

Falls Family Parlor[]

  • The portrait of Dr. Albert Falls on a boat near Schweitzer Falls in 1911 shows his boat with the original red/white striped canopies of the original Jungle Cruise boats.
  • There is a small model of a boat called the Molopo Marie. In the Jungle Cruise's backstory, this boat was named for Dr. Falls' wife, explorer Victoria Marie Falls and was piloted by Alberta.
  • Carvings decorating the room represent animals and vignettes from the Jungle Cruise.
  • The chandelier is modeled after José, Pierre, Fritz, and Michael from the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Library[]

Titles in the library range from books written by SEA members and other characters with thematic ties to Adventureland to jokes about Disney attractions. The book that served as the "lock" for the secret door into the SEA room is a copy of The Jungle Book.
